‘Conscious unbossing' is a new term describing how young adults are opting out of the management track

[SINGAPORE] The term 'conscious unbossing' sounds like another made-up buzzword (anyone else remember Gwyneth Paltrow's 'conscious uncoupling'?), but the trend is real.
It refers to the workplace movement where more young adults choose not to go down the management path, viewing it as a route with many challenges and little reward.
In the past, management was seen as the main path for career advancement. However, this changed post-pandemic, as companies from Meta to HSBC flattened hierarchies to cut costs.
With fewer among their ranks, middle managers are being squeezed harder than before, with a lot more pressure and responsibility, but also less upside.
Gen Zs, many whom joined the workforce during the pandemic, are taking notes.
In a survey by Robert Walters late last year, almost three-quarters of Gen Zs (72 per cent) would rather be individual contributors than middle managers. The top reason? Too much stress for too little reward.

Meanwhile, a separate survey by marketplace vendor Capterra found that three out of four middle managers were burnt out.
🤔 Do Gen Zs really hate management?
But numbers don't tell the full story.
So I did what any data-driven reporter would: I ran my own extremely scientific poll of peers and younger contacts.
Interestingly, millennials – not Gen Zs – were most resistant to taking on management roles. It tracks, as we are often described as the burnout generation, as we are caught in the middle due to our current life stage.
Gen Zs, on the other hand, are a lot more open to the idea. But with some caveats.
'I wouldn't necessarily say Gen Zs don't want to manage,' says Nicole Choo, 27, who is a business development and digital consultant at OpenMinds Singapore. 'I think many of us just want to do things differently… I'm not just looking to 'manage' as I want to build (a team).'
She's not a manager currently, but it's something that she is actually keen on. She views management as 'more than just a title' – it's a way to mentor, guide and learn from her team. Inspired by mentors she's had, she's keen to pay it forward, even if it's 'one of the toughest parts of any job scope'.
Some of her peers have taken on leadership roles, but others prefer deep craft work – which is perfectly valid too.
'We're becoming clearer on what fulfilment and happiness look like, not just what success traditionally means,' she says.
🔨 Making management work
Choo's view injects some nuance to what earlier surveys are saying: Gen Zs aren't rejecting leadership – they're just opposed to outdated management structures and mindsets. It's not authority they want per se, but autonomy, purpose and space to make an impact.
So if you're unsure whether management is for you, here are some questions worth asking:
Do you like working with people?
Management is more about people than KPIs. It's not about being naturally good with people, though – management is a skill you can work at. If you care about your team's growth, you're halfway there.
Why do you want to manage?
If you think it's the surest path to less work for more pay, boy, do I have news for you. But if you find yourself considering management because you want to level up your skills beyond technical expertise, or take on more responsibility, that's a pretty good sign.
Do you enjoy strategy and teamwork?
As you move from being an individual contributor to a manager, you are not just handling your own work anymore. Your thinking needs to go beyond your own individual performance to a more macro view of what matters to the company and how your team can position itself for success.
How do you feel about being a manager?
To be fair, this IS kind of a trick question, but I always believe that your gut feeling is a good gauge. If you're nervous or unsure, that's normal. If you're completely turned off, it might not be the right fit (for now, at least).
How do you handle stress?
Your employees' problems will now be your problem. And your manager's problems are also your problems. Your staff look to you for support and stability – you can't have a public breakdown whenever it gets hard. You need to know your limits and coping strategies.
Will you have a say in the people you lead or how the role is structured?
Are you empowered to make changes or shape processes instead of just following what was done before? If your superiors don't want you to rock the boat, consider if this is aligned with your values and what you want out of your job.
There are no easy answers to whether one should be a manager. But as a millennial middle manager myself, what I find extremely encouraging is that Gen Zs are rewriting the rules, questioning the old playbook and redefining what leadership can look like. I say that's a win for the future of work.

The company on June 20 launched new models based on Oakley's HSTN design, marking the company's first expansion away from Ray-Ban for its display-free glasses. Like the original models, the Oakley versions can make and take phone calls, play music, take pictures and video and use Meta's artificial intelligence to answer questions about the surrounding environment. The new versions, which start at US$399 (S$513) and go up to US$499 for a limited edition model with gold-colored accents, include about double the battery life, video-recording at 3K resolution and water resistance. 'We are increasingly seeing performance use cases with the Ray-Bans like people wearing them on roller coasters, cycling and being around water, so we're trying to lean into that,' says Mr Alex Himel, the company's vice-president in charge of wearables, in an interview. Arriving at its second glasses brand was far from a sure thing. Meta's first glasses, the Ray-Ban Stories, flopped in 2021. But its follow-up version in 2023 was a massive success, giving the social networking giant a real potential hardware stronghold in the artificial intelligence race. 'It was crazy. Popularity caught us by surprise a bit,' Mr Himel said. The Ray-Bans were 'going to be the last display-less pair of glasses. We said we'll take two swings at it, and if it doesn't work we'll go all-in on augmented reality'. Instead, beyond the latest Oakley model, the company has a multi-year road map for the display-less category and is planning a follow-up pair of Oakley glasses based on the Sphera design for later in 2025 , according to people with knowledge of the matter. That pair will be aimed at cyclists and have a centred camera. The model on June 20 has a camera positioned in the upper corner like the Ray-Ban version. The display-free glasses are one component of the overall Meta AI hardware strategy. The company is planning to introduce higher-end glasses with a display to view notifications and the camera view finder later in 202 5, Bloomberg News has reported. In 2027, it aims to roll out its first true augmented reality glasses, which will blend digital apps with the real world. Meta's form-factor has caught on, with several other technology companies working on competitors. Apple Inc. is planning to introduce its first glasses product at the end of 2026, Bloomberg News has reported. That device will operate similarly to the Meta product but better synchronise with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. Inc. also sells glasses, but their current models lack cameras. Mr Himel, who said Meta has sold millions of glasses and has a 'nice, increasing multiple' of purchases on a year-over-year basis each week, attributed the increased popularity to the Ray-Bans improving across a large number of 'small things.' He said the audio quality and microphones started to surpass standalone earbuds, while the camera and AI quality also improved. Still, Mr Himel said battery life remains the 'number one complaint' about the Ray-Ban versions. The new Oakley models can run for 8 hours on a single charge, with the charging case holding 48 hours of juice. 'You should expect a 40 per cent bump with these' he says, attributing the improvement to new battery chemistry and software optimisations – not larger battery packs. Like Ray-Ban, Oakley is owned by EssilorLuxottica SA, which calls Oakley its second most popular brand after Ray-Ban. Mr Himel said Meta will roll out new brands under the EssilorLuxottica portfolio 'as fast as we can. 'We're going to have to move very quickly because in the world of fashion, stuff moves very quickly,' he says. 'The stuff that is a hit right now might not be a year from now. We need to be fast to hit all the brands that we'd like to.' The first Oakley model, becoming available for pre-order on July 11, will be the US$499 limited edition pair. The US$399 versions – which come in grey, black, brown and clear colors – will be released in the coming months. There will be versions with clear, transition and polarised lenses. Like with the Ray-Bans, users can swap the lenses for prescription optics. The glasses will be available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, according to Meta. SYDNEY - Some age-checking applications collect too much data and no product works 100 per cent of the time, but using software to enforce a teenage social media ban can work in Australia, the head of the world's biggest trial of the technology said on Friday (June 20). The view from the government-commissioned Age Assurance Technology Trial of more than 1,000 Australian school students and hundreds of adults is a boost to the country's plan to keep under 16s off social media. From December, in a world first ban, companies like Facebook and Instagram owner Meta, Snapchat and TikTok must prove they are taking reasonable steps to block young people from their platforms or face a fine of up to A$49.5 million (S$41 million). Since the Australian government announced the legislation last year, child protection advocates, tech industry groups and children themselves have questioned whether the ban can be enforced due to workarounds like Virtual Private Networks, which obscure an internet user's location. "Age assurance can be done in Australia privately, efficiently and effectively," said Tony Allen, CEO of the Age Check Certification Scheme, the UK-based organisation overseeing the Australian trial. The trial found "no significant tech barriers" to rolling out a software-based scheme in Australia, although there was "no one-size-fits-all solution, and no solution that worked perfectly in all deployments," Allen added in an online presentation. Allen noted that some age-assurance software firms "don't really know at this stage what data they may need to be able to support law enforcement and regulators in the future. "There's a risk there that they could be inadvertently over-collecting information that wouldn't be used or needed." Organisers of the trial, which concluded earlier this month, gave no data findings and offered only a broad overview which did not name individual products. They will deliver a report to the government next month which officials have said will inform an industry consultation ahead of the December deadline. A spokesperson for the office of the eSafety Commissioner, which will advise the government on how to implement the ban, said the preliminary findings were a "useful indication of the likely outcomes from the trial. [LOS ANGELES] Meta Platforms held discussions with artificial intelligence (AI) search startup Perplexity AI about a possible takeover before moving ahead with a multibillion-dollar investment in Scale AI, according to sources familiar with the matter. The two companies could not come to an agreement and decided not to pursue the deal, said the sources, who asked not to be named as the details of the talks are not public. The financial terms under discussion could not be learned. Perplexity recently closed a new round of funding at a US$14 billion valuation. Meta also attempted to hire Perplexity chief executive officer Aravind Srinivas to join the social media company's new 'superintelligence' team, which is focused on building more powerful AI systems, the sources said. The talks with Meta, which have not previously been reported, highlight Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's willingness to use deals and big hires to catch up in the AI race. The talks took place before Meta finalised a US$14.3 billion investment in Scale AI that gives it a 49 per cent stake in the data-labelling startup. Meta and Perplexity did not respond to requests for comment. Founded in 2022, Perplexity has emerged as one of the most prominent startups using generative AI to rethink core Internet services. Meta has succeeded in hiring Scale AI's former CEO Alexandr Wang, as well as top researchers from Google DeepMind and Sesame AI. Not everyone is jumping to join Meta, however. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a podcast this week that some on his staff had been approached by Meta with offers of US$100 million signing bonuses and even bigger compensation packages, but had declined to join the company. Meta has been in talks with former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to recruit him to the new team, according to sources familiar with the matter. Meta has also held early discussions for a computing deal in which Safe Superintelligence would use Meta's data centre infrastructure, the source said.
