Australians preparing for tax season have been warned to be watchful for early-morning scams designed to catch them off guard.
Taxpayers should expect a deluge of scam activity ahead of June 30, as cunning crooks impersonate the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in emails and texts.
CPA Australia tax lead Jenny Wong warned the public that these communications could often be sent overnight, designed to catch people out before they'd had their morning coffee.
'These 'phishing' scams not only look legitimate, but they're designed to catch you off guard. That's why you'll often see them arrive first thing in the morning because you may be more likely to have a momentary lapse in judgment,' Ms Wong said.
'The scammers know Australians will have tax on their mind and are vulnerable to prompts to act, which is why these messages usually create a sense of urgency or claim of significant refund.

Scam emails impersonating the ATO have titles including 'Urgent new notification in your account inbox', directing unsuspecting people to log into their myGov account through a fake link.
ATO data shows a huge rise in this type of impersonation scam, up by more than 300 per cent in the past year.
The ATO said more scam messages were generally sent during tax time, as scammers tend to know taxpayers expect communications from the tax office.

Other signs of scams are hyperlinks in unsolicited text messages, anomalies in the sender's email address, and requests for urgent personal or financial information.
The National Anti-Scam Centre reports that Australians have lost $13.7m in impersonation scams since the start of the year compared with $4.6m for the same period last year.

Workers' retirement nest eggs set for super boost
Australian workers can look forward to a bigger nest egg, with an increase to the superannuation guarantee to add tens of thousands of dollars to the average super account. From July 1, employers' minimum required contribution to employees' superannuation accounts will rise from 11.5 per cent to 12 per cent. It's the latest and last in a series of incremental increases from nine per cent over more than a decade since they were legislated by the Rudd-Gillard Labor government in 2012. With the latest bump, a 30-year-old earning $60,000 would have an extra $20,000 in super by retirement, according to the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia. It will add about $300 each year to the superannuation of a worker on a $60,000 salary, or $500 for someone on a $100,000 salary. "The system foundations are cemented for young, working people to have a comfortable retirement," ASFA chief executive Mary Delahunty said. "It's a moment all Australians should be proud of." The association says the cost of a comfortable retirement increased 1.6 per cent in the past year, while the cost of a modest retirement rose 1.7 per cent. A "comfortable" retirement includes top-level health insurance, a reasonable car and leisure activities. The cost of either outcome was increasing slower than Australia's current 2.4 per cent headline inflation but retiree budgets remained under pressure from rising food, energy and health costs. Couples on average need $73,900 annually for a comfortable retirement, while most singles needed $52,300 per year, ASFA says. For a modest retirement covering the basics, couples needed $48,200 each year, singles $33,400, or for renting couples, $64,250, and $46,660 each year for singles who rent. The figures underlined the importance of increasing Australia's housing stock, Ms Delahunty said. "They also illustrate how super can be the difference between hardship and stability later in life, especially for renters." For some workers, the extra contribution will come from their existing pay package, according to CPA Australia's superannuation lead Richard Webb. "It's a good idea to check with your employer to see how they view the changes and what it means for you," he said. Workers on contracts with a total remuneration package could see a slight drop in their take-home pay, while those on award or enterprise agreements would likely receive the contribution on-top of their current pay. When compulsory superannuation was introduced in 1992 - in part to reduce government spending on the Age Pension - only one in 10 Australian retirees listed super as a source of income. Nine in 10 people between 30 and 50 now have super. Government spending on the Age Pension is projected to fall from 2.3 per cent of gross domestic product in 2020 to two per cent by 2062/63, despite a doubling of the over-65 population and a trebling of over-85s over the same period. However the super guarantee increase wouldn't help those who missed out on paid work for extended periods, Super Consumer Australia chief executive Xavier O'Halloran said. "(For) people who have caring responsibilities or who have been locked out of the unaffordable housing market ... increasing SG further won't address those inequalities," he told AAP. Mr O'Halloran said there was more that could be done to support people struggling in retirement, when a significant portion of their autumnal years' savings were made. "Right now, there are no minimum standards for retirement products like there are for MySuper," he said. "There is also no performance testing of retirement products, so super funds can still sell poor products."

Do you have $3 million in super? Me neither. It is estimated that the changes will only impact a tiny fraction of the Australian population, around 80,000 people. That's fewer people than can fit in the MCG. In fact, 99.5 per cent of Australians currently do not have more than $3 million in super. According to ATO data, the average super balance is a mere $182,000 for men and $146,000 for women. Greg Jericho, chief economist at the Australia Institute, crunched the numbers and found that around 97 per cent of people currently in the labour force will never have $3 million in superannuation, no matter how hard they work for their entire lives. Even if a young person works their entire life on the full-time average wage, with no time out of the workforce for kids or illness, they will never accumulate $3 million in super. Not surprising when you consider the median super balance for women aged 60-64 is less than $160,000, meaning half of Australian women have less super than that (half of Australian men the same age have just $211,996 or less).

'In the worst-case scenario in which the Strait of Hormuz is closed, it will affect both global LNG and oil markets by up to 20 per cent of their respective annual consumption,' Citi energy analysts said this week. 'Global LNG markets will be more vulnerable than oil to further escalation of Middle East tensions.' These Middle East petro states may be underpinned by oil sales, but LNG gives them much-needed diversification. And LNG assets far away from the region give them pricing and supply upside from any energy price spikes triggered by these conflicts and any related supply shocks. Santos could not be more tempting from a strategic point of view. It would give XRG a business far from the drama of the Middle East thanks to its assets in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Alaska and close to Santos' coveted Asian customers, which have a fast-growing appetite for LNG. And what would the Santos suitors make of Australia's comical industry, where operators get a lot of their gas royalty-free from Australians and then make a fortune selling it back to them as global prices surge? Santos is not the only local energy giant making a splash among the oil giants. Loading Woodside Petroleum boss Meg O'Neill was part of the Trump entourage on his recent trip through the Middle East. She signed up Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil and gas producer, as a partner for Woodside's US projects. 'Lower-carbon' is the other major reason why these petro states are now pouring more money into LNG developments than oil. China's total crude oil consumption dropped last year and developing nations are expected to follow as they adopt the flood of cheap EVs China is churning out. But the future of the Santos bid is as uncertain as the outcome of the Israel/Iran conflict. The XRG consortium is conducting due diligence, and as both sides are cautioning, there is no certainty that a formal offer will emerge. Loading More importantly, there are many regulatory hurdles, including government approval if a concrete offer does emerge for what is a critical piece of Australian infrastructure. The issue of domestic gas reservation, to prevent taxpayers and local businesses from getting screwed by companies supplying Australia its own gas, will be an interesting part of any takeover negotiations, especially since Santos already supplies gas domestically. The fact that Santos is trading at something close to a $5 billion discount to the $30 billion cash being offered for its shares tells you plenty about how cautious the market is about the potential success of this deal.
