
Earth Impactors Remain A Catastrophic Threat, Says Leading Geologist

The impact would have thrown trillions of tons of dust into the atmosphere, cooling the Earth's climate significantly, which may have been responsible for the mass extinction. A layer of iridium-rich rock, known as the K-pg boundary, is thought to be the remnants of the impact debris.
Earth impactors of the sort that brought down the dinosaurs are now usually looked upon as relics of the distant past. Indeed, most of Earth's asteroidal incursions took place hundreds of millions of years earlier than the Chicxulub impactor that hit Earth some 66 million years ago.
But each year astronomers detect new asteroids, and their impact threat remains real. The United Nations has even declared 2029 for as the 'International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defense.'
Even if a small 50-meter diameter object hits a large city, it could easily kill a million people, Christian Koeberl, a planetary scientist at the University of Vienna, tells me at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025 in Austria. We now know of 40,000 Earth crossing or near-Earth asteroids, he says. In a decade's time, we may have detected as many as 100,000 near-Earth asteroids, says Koeberl.
Yet on Earth there are only 200 currently known impact craters and only three are known to be truly ancient between 2.2 to 2.3 billion years old. And less than half of the 200 have precisely determined ages.
That's not very many, but Earth is an active geological body, and so things change on the surface over time, says Koeberl.
On Earth, there's constant weathering, erosion, volcanism as well as plate tectonics, the means by which our planet recycles its crust.
Even though Galileo first identified what we now know are impact craters on the moon in 1610, geologists didn't definitively link those lunar craters to impacts until rock samples from Apollo 11 were analyzed in Earth laboratories, says Koeberl.
But in the 1980s, when evidence for the dinosaur-killing impactor was discovered, geologists realized that all you need is a very small asteroidal object to make a crater that is least 20 times larger than the impacting body, says Koeberl.
How important has satellite remote sensing been in identifying Earth impact craters?
It used to be somewhat useful, but it has run its course, because by now, we have identified all the circular structures that are obvious of impact origin, says Koeberl.
Even so, Koeberl notes that he's constantly bombarded by amateur Google Earth impact sleuths who think they have found a new impact crater. But as Koeberl explains nearly all such photos have been formed by wholly Earth-based geological processes.
Impacts are the highest energetic geological process that we know, says Koeberl. Each event per area, per affected rock is somewhere between a hundred to a few thousand times more energetic than the largest volcanic eruption possible, he says.
In fact, they are so energetic that they cause changes in the affected rocks' mineral structure.
I could name a dozen other geological processes that form circular crater-like features on Earth's surface, says Koeberl. This is what brings us to the very important point of shock metamorphism, which is how you identify an impact crater, he says.
Koeberl takes out his laptop and shows me a magnified image of a quartz crystal rock that has the telltale signatures of impact shock.
No normal quartz crystal will look like this, says Koeberl. The lines that go through here are what we call shock lamellae, and they only form from an impact and no other geological process, he says.
The paucity of ancient craters also correlates with major episodes of extensive 'Snowball Earth' glaciation phases, with its related subglacial erosion some 650 to 720 million years ago, Koeberl and colleagues note in a 2024 paper in the journal Precambrian Research. It's thought to have removed kilometers of material from the continents, enough to erase most existing impact craters except for the large ones, they write.
Despite their potential for calamity, serendipitously, a few impacts have inadvertently revealed precious metals buried beneath Earth's surface.
Located in the center of the Witwatersrand gold fields in present day South Africa, the Vredefort impact event formed the largest impact structure that remains at least partly preserved, the authors note. Some two billion years ago, the impact uplifted a massive gold cache that since the 1880s has generated about a third of the total gold ever extracted from our planet, they write.
Trouble is, most of us fail to realize that we live in a dynamic solar system with asteroidal and cometary leftovers from its formation that potentially threaten life here in untold ways.
Past impact craters on the surface of our planet serve as a reminder that we are constantly bombarded from space, often with devastating consequences, says Koeberl. Such events happened in the past and will happen in the future, he says.

The world may be on track to breach 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming in about three years, a group of scientists is warning in a new paper. Researchers have called for keeping the planet's warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. An update on the state of global warming published this week says that if 2024 levels of planet-warming emissions continue, there's a 50 percent chance that the world will have warmed to 1.5 degrees in a little more than three years. They note that this estimate is 'not expected to correspond exactly to the time that 1.5 °C global warming level is reached' due to a few uncertainties. However, the finding paints a stark picture to how close the world is to passing that threshold. The 1.5 figure is partly a political one — the difference between 1.49 degrees and 1.51 degrees, for example, is not expected to necessarily be the difference between survival and doom. However, there are certain 'tipping points' after which climate damage becomes irreversible — like the melting of the Greenland ice sheet or the collapse of ocean current systems. The paper says that currently, the world is estimated to have warmed 1.36 degrees Celsius (2.45 degrees Fahrenheit) and is currently warming at a rate of about 0.27 degrees Celsius (0.49 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. These warming levels represent an average level of warming of the Earth's temperature since pre-industrial times. The amount of warming in any given place — or the temperature change experienced by humans — may be different. The report, authored by dozens of scientists, is part of an initiative called the Indicators of Global Climate Change which seeks to fill the gap of climate information in the years between official United Nations climate reports.

‘Elio' is an intergalactic tale — but for Toronto's Domee Shi, it hits close to home
TORONTO - For Domee Shi, making a movie about an introverted kid getting abducted by aliens felt oddly familiar. Not because she's had any close encounters, but because she remembers being a teenager longing to be taken away to a world where her weirdness was understood. The Toronto native co-directs 'Elio,' a Pixar animated sci-fi film about an 11-year-old orphan who yearns to be snatched by extraterrestrials to escape his loneliness — and gets his wish when an interplanetary organization mistakes him for Earth's ambassador. 'He's this lonely artsy kid who just wants to belong somewhere. I definitely felt that way growing up,' says the Oscar-winning animator behind 2022's coming-of-age Toronto-set hit 'Turning Red.' Born in Chongqing, China and raised in Toronto after immigrating to Canada as a child, Shi grew up obsessed with anime. She describes it as an isolating experience. In high school, she was the vice-president of the anime club — a group that had only two members. 'Back in the '90s and 2000s, anime was popular, but it wasn't as popular, I feel, as it is now…. I really wished people cared about the same stuff that I cared about,' Shi says during a promotional stop in Toronto. She recalls dreaming of going to animation school so she could 'find people who understood me, who spoke my language, who understood all my nerdy-ass references.' In 'Elio,' out Friday, the film's titular character, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, finds a sense of belonging in the Communiverse — a kind of cosmic United Nations where alien civilizations convene to share knowledge and resolve conflicts. It's a far cry from life on Earth, where Elio feels out of place living with his stressed-out, overextended aunt Olga, voiced by Zoe Saldaña. In real life, Shi says she found her own place in the universe at Anime North, an annual anime convention in suburban Toronto. She remembers attending for the first time as a teen. 'I had a really crappy 'One Piece' cosplay on. I wore a straw hat and was dressed like a bad version of Luffy,' she says, referring to the protagonist of the Japanese manga series. 'But then I looked around and there were so many crappy cosplays around me, and people just wearing their nerddom on their sleeve…. I was like, 'Oh my God, everyone speaks the same language as me.'' It was there that Shi learned about the renowned animation program at Toronto's Sheridan College, which had propelled graduates into orbit at studios such as Pixar and Disney. After graduating from Sheridan, Shi went on to work for Pixar as a storyboard artist for films including 2015's 'Inside Out' and 2019's 'Toy Story 4.' Shi became the first woman to direct a Pixar short with 2018's 'Bao,' a heartfelt tale about a Chinese-Canadian mother and her dumpling-turned-son that won the 2019 Oscar for best animated short. She broke new ground again with 'Turning Red,' becoming the first woman to solo direct a Pixar feature. 'Elio' marks Shi's first time co-directing a feature. Shi says the film began as a project by 'Coco' director Adrian Molina, inspired by his isolated childhood growing up on a military base. After delays caused by the Hollywood strikes, Molina was tapped to co-direct 'Coco 2' and handed the reins to Shi and fellow director Madeline Sharafia, who was a storyboard artist on 'Turning Red,' to complete the story. Shi describes the final product as 'a beautiful mind-meld' of all three directors' styles. In addition to channeling her own teen experience, she infused the film with influences from her favourite sci-fi films growing up — including 1979's 'Alien' and 1982's 'The Thing' — as well as eerie stop-motion classics such as 1993's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas.' 'I think kids can handle a little bit of scariness if it's more of a fun scary, like a thrill,' she says. Shi notes there are some Canadian influences in 'Elio' as well. 'It's weird to say but I feel like diversity shows up very naturally in my work and I think that's because I grew up in a very diverse neighbourhood and city,' she says. She says she doesn't even clock those multicultural touches until American colleagues point it out. 'People will be like, 'Oh, are you doing that intentionally? Is it intentional that Mei's friends are all girls from different backgrounds?'' she says, referencing the quartet at the heart of 'Turning Red.' 'I mean, kind of, but that's also what my friends were like growing up. I grew up in East York, moved to Scarborough. That's just what kids looked like, and I'm just used to it.' Elio's cultural background — half Mexican and half Dominican — is woven into the film with care and intention. His Mexican heritage draws from Molina's roots, while his Dominican side is brought to life through Saldaña's own background. Shi says the actor infused Olga with personal touches, including the suggestion of a Dominican song for one scene. A nod to Shi's own heritage turns up in an unexpected way. 'I feel like the Communiverse could be an allegory for Canada,' she laughs. 'It's definitely a mishmash and a beautiful, chaotic mosaic of different cultures and species and aliens all working and living together.'
