Broncos' updated depth chart projection after 2 roster moves

Broncos' updated depth chart projection after 2 roster moves

USA Today6 hours ago

The Denver Broncos swapped out defensive backs on their 90-man* offseason roster last week.
The Broncos signed UFL cornerback Mario Goodrich and waived safety Tanner McCalister to make room for him. The club has now entered a summer lull leading up to training camp.
With spring workouts now behind us, we've put together an updated depth chart projection for the Broncos. Keep in mind that his depth chart is a projection, not an official depth chart from the team. Denver is not required to release an official depth chart before preseason.
*Note that the Broncos technically have 91 players on the roster, but rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw does not count against the offseason roster limit as part of the NFL's international player program.
Denver Broncos Depth Chart
Quarterback (3)
No surprises on the quarterback depth chart. Stidham will serve as the primary backup again this season, and Ehlinger might be bumped down to the practice squad when the 53-man roster is set.
Running back (6)
It wouldn't be shocking to see the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster. Whoever doesn't make the 53-man squad will be top candidates for the practice squad. Either one of Badie or Watson could emerge as a sleeper for the active roster with a good summer.
Tight end/fullback (7)
Engram is the team's top receiving threat at the position, and Trautman is probably safe as a blocking TE. Burton is back as the team's fullback, and Adkins fills a hybrid role. Krull, Lohner and Prieskorn might be competing for one final spot.
Wide receiver (12)
If the Broncos plan to carry six receivers on the 53-man roster, the favorites are pretty easy to project. But everyone will get an opportunity to impress this summer.
Offensive line (16)
All five starting offensive linemen from last year are returning, so the competitions will be for the backup spots. The interior backups will be asked to play both guard and center, and the backup tackles should be able to play on the left and right in a pinch.
Defensive line (10)
The top six spots seem to be essentially locked in, but again, players will get opportunities to win spots this summer. Sai'vion Jones improves the team's depth, and Eyioma Uwazurike will look to have a breakthrough campaign in his second season back from a gambling suspension.
Outside linebacker (7)
Denver's already-deep room got even deeper this spring when the team drafted Robinson, but his biggest contributions might come on special teams as a rookie. Walker will be a sleeper to watch this summer.
Inside linebacker (8)
The inside linebacker competition will be fascinating to watch this summer. Singleton is coming back from a torn ACL, and he'll turn 32 in December. Sanders is healthy and entering the summer with positional clarity. Bailey impressed last summer, and the team added a few intriguing undrafted free agents this spring. Let's see how it shakes out.
Cornerback (11)
Barron can line up inside and outside, and it remains to be seen where spot ends up being his primary position. If Barron plays outside more often than inside, Moss could be moved to the slot. If Barron primarily plays inside, though, Moss figures to continue starting across from PS2. McMillian is great depth inside, and Abrams-Draine impressed when called upon last season. Goodrich will aim to win a spot on special teams.
Safety (8)
The Broncos would save $4.19 million if they cut Locke, so he could be a trade candidate or cap casualty this summer. Franklin figures to make the squad for his special teams contributions.
Special teams (3)
The three specialist spots appear to be set.
Denver will trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 26, then they will build a 16- or 17-player practice squad. Last year, the team's initial practice squad included Burton, Tillman, Bailey and Badie.

Top 10 Women's College Basketball Players with the Highest NIL Valuations

Ever since the advent of the name, image and likeness (NIL) era in college sports in 2021, football and men's basketball players have typically been the highest earners. However, women's college basketball has been a major beneficiary of NIL, too. In fact, women's college athletes' NIL deals outpaced men's college athletes' NIL deals in 2023, according to a report from SponsorUnited. The report showed that NIL deal distribution among the top 100 most endorsed athletes that year was balanced between women's athletes earning 52% of the money from those partnerships and men's athletes earning 48% of the money from those deals. Women's college basketball players made up 35% of the money earned by women's athletes in NIL that year, the report added. Of course, stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, Hailey Van Lith and Cameron Brink were all still in college at the time of the report, helping to spearhead a rise in the popularity of women's basketball in recent years. That said, let's take a look at the 10 most valuable players in women's college basketball entering the 2025-26 season, via On3. School: LSU Position: Guard NIL valuation: $1.5 million Flau'jae Johnson has been one of the premier faces of NIL across all college sports, being able to profit on her rapping career while also starring on the court. Ranked 52nd in On3's most valuable college athletes list, Johnson has landed countless NIL deals, reportedly inking deals with Powerade, JBL Audio, Raising Cane's, Campus Ink, Papa John's, Doritos, Uninterrupted, Amazon, Turbo Tax, Experian, JanSport, The Athlete's Foot, Tinder, Bazooka, Apple Cash and Mondelez. Johnson also agreed to an NIL deal with Unrivaled, the new women's professional basketball league that just finished its first year. A third-team All-American last season, Johnson has been viewed as a top prospect in the 2026 WNBA Draft as she enters her senior year. School: Oklahoma Position: Guard NIL valuation: $755,000 Aaliyah Chavez was ranked as the No. 1 recruit by 247 Sports in the Class of 2025, allowing her to profit before she entered college. It was rumored that she was commanding a $1.5 NIL package before committing to Oklahoma over Texas. It was also reported that she was expected to agree to an NIL deal with Jordan Brand shortly after committing to Oklahoma in March. School: USC Position: Guard NIL valuation: $739,000 NIL has also allowed JuJu Watkins to profit early in her college career. After being named a consensus first-team All-American as a freshman for the 2023-24 season, Watkins became a fixture in State Farm ads. Watkins also has reported deals with Nike, Fanatics, Mondelez, United Airlines, Spotify, AT&T and Gatorade, among others. In fact, Watkins starred in a Gatorade ad alongside Bueckers and Cooper Flagg that aired during the men's and women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments in March and April. As Watkins rehabs from an ACL tear, she has been viewed as one of the future faces of the sport, and she has two years of eligibility remaining. School: Iowa State Position: Guard NIL valuation: $412,000 Jada Williams has earned a handful of reported NIL deals that date back to before she began college in 2023, agreeing to partnerships with Overtime, Nerf, Lace Clips, Lemon Perfect, Spalding, Bumble, Gymshark and more. Williams averaged 12.7 games as a sophomore in 2024-25, transferring from Arizona to Iowa State. School: Alabama A&M Position: Guard NIL valuation: $299,000 One of the few players from a mid-major school to appear on any of these lists, Shelomi Sanders — the daughter of Colorado football coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders — has collected a handful of NIL deals from notable brands through the end of her sophomore season. She has reportedly agreed to deals with Dexcom U, EA Sports, Meta, Instagram, KFC and more. School: UConn Position: Guard NIL valuation: $218,000 Azzi Fudd was collecting NIL deals even before she helped UConn win a national championship in 2025. The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2021, Fudd notably signed a deal with Under Armor to reportedly join Steph Curry's personal brand as a freshman . Fudd has also reportedly received deals with Chiptole, TikTok, American Eagle, TIAA, Nerf, Buick, Bose, Door Dash, Madison Reed and more, as she opted to return to UConn for one last season in 2025-26. She's expected to be a top prospect in the 2026 WNBA Draft. School: South Carolina Position: Forward NIL valuation: $159,000 Chloe Kitts, who helped South Carolina win a national title as a sophomore in 2024, has logged a few notable NIL deals in her college career. She's reportedly earned deals from Powerade, Sephora, Marathon and Mondelez. As she enters her senior year, Kitts has emerged as one of the top players on Dawn Staley's squad, winning SEC Tournament MVP in 2025. School: UConn Position: Guard NIL valuation: $145,000 KK Arnold, who was one of the top recruits in the Class of 2023, has several NIL deals with notable brands. She has reportedly agreed to deals with the NIL Store, Powerade, Intuit TurboTax, Raising Cane's and others. After coming off the bench for UConn's title-winning squad in 2025, Arnold seems in line to have a larger role in 2025-26, which could help her earn more NIL money. School: Florida Position: Guard NIL valuation: $138,000 The daughter of NBA icon Shaquille O'Neal, Me'Arah "Meezy" O'Neal is in the top 10 on this list following her freshman year at Florida. She doesn't have any reported NIL deals. School: LSU Position: Guard NIL valuation: $125,000 MiLaysia Fulwiley was one of the top transfers in women's college basketball this offseason, making the move from South Carolina to LSU after winning SEC Sixth Woman of the Year in 2024-25. She reportedly inked a handful of NIL deals during her time at South Carolina, agreeing to partnerships with RITZ Crackers, Curry Brand, Red Bull, Intuit TurboTax and more. Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Pair of Rockies bats make for strong adds despite poor team play

It's no fun to watch the Colorado Rockies slide into irrelevance. The Rockies, as you know, have the worst record in baseball. They're 27th in runs scored. They also have the worst pitching by far, with a messy 5.54 ERA — over a run behind the next closest team, the Chicago White Sox. But it's the right time of the year to view the Rockies with an optimistic lens. Colorado has been a competitive 9-11 over its last 20 games, and a glorious home swing is upon us. Nine of the next 12 Colorado games will be at Coors Field, still the best cheat-code ballpark in all of fantasy baseball. It's midsummer when this stadium really shows its teeth. And while the Rockies lineup doesn't go deep enough to recommend wholesale pickups, we can at least squint and see some plausible upside with a couple of widely-available guys. Advertisement [Smarter waivers, better trades, optimized lineups — Yahoo Fantasy Plus unlocks it all] Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Hitters to Consider Tyler Freeman, SS/OF, Rockies (6% Rostered on Yahoo) Expectations were low when Freeman first joined the Colorado lineup — he was batting ninth at the opening of the month. But a .323/.412/.434 push has grabbed the team's attention, with Freeman slotting first or second in his last seven starts. Freeman already has eight steals in his 38 games, which would translate to 30-plus in a full season. And he's controlling his at-bats nicely, with more walks than strikeouts. I could see Freeman holding fantasy relevance the rest of the year. Mickey Moniak, OF, Rockies (7%) Although Moniak was the first pick in the 2016 draft, he's fallen into a journeyman's career — he's been closer to Mickey Mouse than Mickey Mantle. But he's found a nifty power pocket with the Rockies, ripping 11 home runs in just 192 at-bats. The home runs are close to evenly split home and away (six at Coors), although Moniak does have a juicy .547 slugging percentage in the thin air. Like Freeman, Moniak has enjoyed better lineup real estate of late. I'm not as confident in what Moniak will be long-term, but he holds my interest while the Rockies are mostly at home. Ernie Clement, 1B/2B/SS/3B, Blue Jays (20%) You have to accept that Clement doesn't offer a lot of category juice — just four home runs and 2-for-5 on steals. But he's carrying a sturdy .307 average and he qualifies at every infield position for Yahoo managers. The Blue Jays have steered into Clement as a regular, starting him in 41-of-43 games. He's the perfect type of versatile reserve to carry you through when injuries strike. Despite swinging freely at the plate, Clement has outstanding contact skills, striking out a modest 11.1% of the time. He's a craftsman. Javier Báez, SS/3B/OF, Tigers (41%) Although the pretty .290/.328/.473 slash line catches your attention, it's not fully approved with the batted-ball profile — Statcast data says Báez should be batting .254 and slugging .406. But even if Báez regressed to those ratios, he'd likely hold fantasy interest, covering three positions and showing playable pop. Báez will swing at almost anything you throw near the plate, but he's trimmed his strikeout rate down to 21.4%, a career low. Báez will never justify the massive contract the Tigers handed him three years ago (and the Mets will never forget trading Pete Crow-Armstrong to get Báez four years ago), but at least he looks like a bonafide MLB player again. Advertisement Josh Smith, 1B/SS/3B/OF, Rangers (47%) Smith is back from a hamstring injury and producing nicely, with a .284/.350/.431 slash, seven homers, and eight steals. The Rangers often shield him from left-handed pitching (and his platoon bias supports that), but the schedule lines up nicely, with 10-of-12 right-handed opponents slated for the next two weeks. The Rangers offense was a no-fun zone to open the year, but it's been around league average in June. Small steps, but progress nonetheless. Nolan Schanuel, 1B, Angels (17%) The surname isn't easy to spell or pronounce (shawn-uh-well, emphasis on the first syllable), which might be why the roster tag stays so low. Schanuel is a callback to a time when first basemen often carried good averages with modest power, the Mark Grace or Nick Johnson frame. And there could be room for growth with Schanuel, as he's just 23 and was a first-round pick two years ago. All of his plate-discipline metrics are excellent, and his average and slugging numbers are validated by the under-the-hood stats.

Southwick Motocross 2025 preview: Top finishes, previous winners, historic results, who to watch

Following an off-week in the schedule, the 2025 Pro Motocross series heads to The Wick 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts, to play in the sandbox for Round 5. Jett Lawrence is the defending champion of this race, which is part of an incredible 19 overall victories in 20 Pro Motocross rounds. However, this race will be the last time in 2025 that this distinction will hold true. Last year, Jett injured his thumb in a practice crash following the Southwick event and missed the remainder of the season, only to return and win two of the three SuperMotocross Championship rounds and the championship. Dan Beaver, Jett's sweep of the motos last week moves his total to 34 of 40 races. NBC Sports analyst Ricky Carmichael has the most wins on this track with eight, while second-place Jeff Stanton has four. The winningest active rider is Eli Tomac, who sits third on the chart with three. He could move up one spot to tie Stanton for second on the list, or the more likely alternative is that Jett will move up one position and tie Tomac for third. A Remarkable Headline However, regardless of those outcomes, this will be a special race, as this venue often favors dark horses. Jett and Eli are the only riders in the field with multiple overall victories, and 16 others have one each. Dylan Ferrandis is included in that list, but the vast majority of the field has not yet won at The Wick. Justin Cooper and Aaron Plessinger are poised to capitalize on the egalitarian nature of this venue. Fans should add Hunter Lawrence's name to that list as he is one of five riders who have swept the top five in the first four rounds alongside Jett, Tomac, Plessinger, and Cooper. And Hunter is tired of finishing second, having done so seven times in his career without an overall victory. RJ Hampshire is the only other rider with four top-10s to his credit in 2025. Remarkably, in three seasons — one of which was shortened by injury — Jett has already moved to 10th on the all-time 450 Motocross wins list. If he scores the overall victory this week, he will tie James Stewart and Jeff Stanton for eighth. 250 Notes Haiden Deegan looks to defend his 2024 Southwick victory, a task made easier by the departure of Chance Hymas following an ACL injury last week at High Point. Deegan has dominated the first four rounds with two 'perfect' days. He was the fastest qualifier and swept motos in two rounds (Hangtown and High Point), marking the first time that has been accomplished since Dylan Ferrandis in 2020. All three of Deegan's victories this season came after he swept the motos. But winning back-to-back races at The Wick is difficult. In the past 11 rounds on this track, there have been 11 different winners, according to Jo Shimoda could emerge as Deegan's fiercest competitor this week. Southwick is his best track with four podiums in four rounds. In that span, he's accumulated two moto wins, but they came in the past two seasons in the second race of the day after he experienced terrible starts. Shimoda was 6-1 in 2023 and 9-1 last year before finishing third overall. He'll need to get off the gate quickly in Moto 1 this week to reverse the trend.
