Study recommends mandatory four-week break for players

Professional footballers should be allowed at least a four-week off-season break, plus a minimum four-week retraining period before a return to competition, according to a new report.The study, released on Thursday by global players' union Fifpro, led to 70 medical and performance experts agreeing on 12 safeguards they want to introduce in a bid to protect players from exhaustion and excessive workload. Fifpro said it represents the most extensive expert consensus to date on safeguards against excessive workload in professional football.More than 75% agreement was required among participants to establish each recommendation.
Among the recommendations are:a four-week off-season breakmandatory mid-season breaksa minimum four-week retraining period before a return to competitive actionand mandatory consideration of the travel burden on players."This study presents safety standards based on the considered and independent opinions of medical and performance experts working in professional football who understand the mental and physical strain placed on players," Professor Doctor Vincent Gouttebarge, Fifpro medical director, said. "If we can all agree that health comes first, then we should take steps to implement these safeguards."The release of the report comes just days before the opening game of the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States.Premier League sides Manchester City and Chelsea are both involved in the tournament, which concludes on 13 July.Should either reach the final, players will have a gap of just five weeks before the Premier League season begins on 15 August.Chelsea's first game of the Club World Cup takes place on 16 June, just 19 days after their Conference League final triumph over Real Betis. In September, a week prior to suffering an ACL injury, City midfielder Rodri said players were close to going on strike because of the increase in games, while team-mate Manuel Akanji suggested he would have to retire at 30-years-old as a result of the lack of breaks in the calendar.In October, Fifpro filed a legal complaint with the European Commission over what it said was Fifa's "abuse of dominance," which was specifically related to the Club World Cup.

June 21 - The Texas Rangers managed just four hits on Saturday, but they made the most of them as they earned a 3-2 road win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Kumar Rocker (3-4) gave up all five Pirates hits as he teamed with three relivers to give Pittsburgh its sixth loss in its last seven games. The two-time first-round draft pick threw 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs, five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Pirates starter Mitch Keller saw his hard luck season continue. He allowed just a hit, a walk and an unearned run through his first five innings before the Rangers scored twice on him in the sixth. Keller (1-10), whose only win this season came in his first start on March 28, went 5-2/3 innings allowing two earned runs. The right-hander struck out five, gave up three hits and walked two. Both walks scored. Keller walked Ezequiel Duran to start the third. One out later, Kyle Higashioka lined a base hit to left field that Adam Frazier allowed to get past him and roll to the wall. The error allowed Duran to score and Higashioka to advance to second. Pittsburgh leveled the score in the fifth with small ball. Henry Davis and Ke'Bryan Hayes led off with consecutive singles, moving to second and third on Isiah Kiner-Falefa's sacrifice bunt. Oneil Cruz then scored Davis on a sacrifice fly to center. The Rangers would reclaim the lead in their next at-bats. Josh Smith got a one-out single and moved to second on Sam Haggerty's walk. Corey Seager's single to right scored Smith, and Marcus Semien made it 3-1 when his sacrifice fly to center scored Haggerty. The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in their half of the sixth. Tommy Fleetwood leads by three to boost maiden PGA Tour win hopes in Connecticut

Tommy Fleetwood opened up a three-shot lead at the Travelers Championship to raise hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory. The Englishman fired a flawless 63, including five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 13th, to reach 16 under par, three clear of American pair Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley going into Sunday's final round at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. It was Fleetwood's lowest round on the PGA Tour this year – two shots better than his 65 on the final day of the Truist Championship in Philadelphia last month – and just one stroke away from his best ever. 'It (winning) will come down to a bunch of things,' Fleetwood told CBS Sports. 'I haven't been in contention much at all this year, I've been on the outskirts if you like. 'My best finishes have been just outside of being in contention, but like really close. So to put myself there and be in the last group (on Sunday), I'm really happy with that. 'I've been here plenty of times, I'm looking forward to it. I'm happy with the work I've done and happy I've bounced back for the first few days of this tournament from last week (US Open). 'It's just an amazing opportunity for me to go out and enjoy it, and hopefully it's our time.' Fleetwood would be a popular winner as the 34-year-old had the most top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without a win. That number totals 41 – seven more than the second man, Brett Quigley, on that list – but the elusive victory hovered into sight on a curious day when overnight leaders Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas went backwards. World number one Scheffler made a triple bogey seven at the first hole and was strangely out of sorts for most of the day. Scheffler signed for a double bogey at the eighth and dropped more shots at the fourth and 16th saw him finish with a 72, nine shots adrift of Fleetwood at nine under par. Thomas went round in 73 with his card wrecked by a quadruple bogey nine at the 13th as he sat 10 shots back at six under. American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley roared into contention with a 63 to join Henley, who shot 61, on 13 under par. Jason Day is two shots further back. Rory McIlroy covered the outward nine in 31 to move to nine under par and put his name high on the leaderboard. But the Masters champion took six at the par-four 12th and a birdie at the 15th was quickly cancelled out by a dropped shot at the next. McIlroy starts the final day tied for eighth among a group which includes Scheffler.

That has been a very clear message from the Manchester City boss who wants to leave last season's disappointments in the past and focus on getting back to the top. The Club World Cup is actually bolted onto the end of the 2024/25 calendar but that year was one of City's worst for many years as they finished the campaign empty-handed. They surrendered their Premier League title, lost the FA Cup final and had an early exit from the Champions League as well as being besieged by injuries. ‌ There is a clear determination to leave that season behind them and focus on the future which is to try and put themselves back on top of the world. ‌ City have largely ruled the Premier League since Guardiola took charge, they won the previous incarnation of the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2023. This new-look competition probably does not view City as the favourites as they might have been in the recent past and that is why Guardiola is channelling his positive thought and energy on getting them back there. That has been delivered in team talks and also with nearly £300m spent in 2025 for a new-look City line-up with the likes of Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish likely to follow Kevin de Bruyne out of the exit door. City's Brazil winger Savinho, 21, who is set to face Abu Dhabi side Al Ain in their second game in the US in Atlanta in the early hours of Monday in UK time, said: 'This is very much the new season for us. Last season is over, we can't change anything about that now. We're completely focused on this one. We've got to learn from the mistakes we made last season and also forget about it a bit. 'I'm really happy that we were able to bring in four such quality reinforcements. They're training really well and integrating into a group that is really settled so that is good to see. I'm looking forward to getting onto the pitch with them.' ‌ Savinho was a bright spot in City's season as the 21-year-old joined in 2024 for £30m and his pace, goals and energy really put him on the map. The season overall was a frustrating one for City but Savinho says it was a big learning curve for him despite the setbacks. Savinho said: 'I certainly learnt a lot and I felt like I evolved a lot as the season went on. That's thanks to Pep, my team mates and the coaches as well. But I'm looking to improve even more this season. To get more goals, more assists and be able to help the team. ‌ 'I'm so happy here. We put in some marvellous work and marvellous preparation. I'm really happy to be here and my team mates, the coaches are really excited about the tournament. We put in the hard yards, we've prepared well and we're really ready for tomorrow's game.' Nico Gonzalez was one of the big January signings as he joined for £50m and was seen as a vital arrival to help plug the gap left by Rodri who missed virtually all the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury. ‌ That was a huge blow and issue for City's season but Rodri is coming back and Gonzalez says he is learning from the Spain midfielder. He said: 'He has been back a couple of months, he is an amazing player and really good in everything that can be good in a midfielder. 'I am trying to learn the most I can and I think I am starting to watch him at his best level. I am seeing things that I haven't seen in a lot of midfielders.'
