T'puram: Two panchayats, Parassala and Vellanad, in Thiruvananthapuram district secured places in the top 100 rankings of the best-performing panchayats across the nation in the survey conducted by
Mission Antyodaya
.
It is an initiative of ministry of rural development for the optimum utilization of funds allocated for the development of rural areas of the country. With a weightage score of 139.98, Parassala secured the 53rd rank nationally and Vellanad came in 75th position with a score of 138.79.
These panchayats secured first and second places in the state-wise rankings. The national survey was conducted in the year 2022-23, but the results were published only recently. Two panchayats in Gujarat secured the first two spots, followed by six places in Telangana. The ranking reflects the progress and performance of various development programmes within the specific grama panchayat. It also reflects the score of each panchayat in major sectors like agriculture, health, sanitation and rural infrastructure. The ranking will help identify the deficits in each panchayat and on the basis of it, measures will be taken to plan a course of action for each year."We expected a much better rank as we were excellent in implementing all the projects. We could provide 100% electricity connections and toilet facilities in all the households. Since our panchayat is small, our own fund is meagre and implementation of projects depends fully on state funds. There was a delay in releasing funds for various projects and it affects implementation. If the govt grants funds on time, we can improve our rankings next time," said
Vellanad panchayat
president K S Rajalakshmi.
Parassala panchayat
president Manju Smitha L also expressed her happiness over the ranking and promised to take more efforts to advance the level. However, an officer of the economics and statistics department opined that despite being an advanced state, only two panchayats could secure spots in the first 100 ranks.

The officer also blamed the common criteria being followed for determining the ranks and suggested that only a govt-level intervention can change the odd criteria being followed.
"In Kerala, a panchayat is formed of two or more villages, unlike the other states which have just a village in one panchayat. In the Yes/No questionnaire for the survey, there are questions on how many post offices are there in the village, how many railway stations, Jan Aushadhis, public toilets, etc. In most of the panchayats, there will be only one such facility, but to the questions to other villagers, the answers could be No. This led to the decline in points earned and none of our panchayats got placed in the first 50 rankings," the officer said. Each question carries two points and there are 50 such questions in the questionnaire.

Modi focuses on serving people

Hyderabad: Union Minister and State BJP chief G Kishan Reddy has emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes public representatives should be accessible to people and work to address their issues. He was speaking at the 'Viksit Bharat Sankalpa Sabha,' which celebrated 11 years of the Modi government and the first year of Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender's term. He highlighted the significant developments achieved under Modi's leadership. Reddy pointed out that the BJP had been in power for 11 years, delivering transparent governance. He contrasted this with the corruption scandals that plagued the previous Congress-led UPA regime, noting the absence of such scandals during Modi's tenure, which showcases the administration's integrity. The Union Minister recounted how Modi's leadership had strengthened India's response to terrorism, citing the surgical strikes as a significant shift in policy. "For Telangana, substantial funds have been allocated for infrastructure projects, including the construction of national highways and the modernization of railway stations," he said, highlighting the progress made under Modi compared to that in the previous Congress government. Kishan Reddy pointed out that Telangana had struggled with debt and corruption, particularly under the Bharat Rashtra Samithi party, which had failed to serve its citizens effectively. He expressed his confidence that BJP would win the next Legislative Assembly elections in the state. BJP MP and OBC Morcha National president Dr K. Laxman outlined how the Congress had consistently let down Backward Classes (BCs) from the time of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to Rajiv Gandhi, pointing out the flaws in the caste survey conducted by the Telangana government, which he argued deprived BCs of their due rights. Eatala Rajender said that the exhibition organized to mark the occasion showcased the achievements from Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to Modi. Recalling his interaction with the Prime Minister earlier in his role as the State Finance Minister regarding the rollout of the GST, he stated, "Modi focuses on serving the people rather than simply seeking power." He highlighted Modi's demonstration of the country's strength through 'Operation Sindoor'. In contrast, he pointed out that the Congress party was mired in scandals, with some of their own ministers facing jail time due to mismanagement. He noted that the state of Telangana was born out of sacrifices, but Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had disrespected its people. Modi's leadership exemplified how a country could thrive, with India excelling in digital transactions. "While some create sensationalism with words, it is actions that matter, which reflects Modi's approach. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee sacrificed his life for our unity, and Modi has fulfilled his vision."

Trade deal hits hurdle over US demand of low duties on agricultural , genetically modified food

NEW DELHI: The proposed trade deal with the US is has run into rough weather with Indian authorities resisting the insistence of their counterparts to allow lower-duty import of American agricultural products such as maize and soybean, fearing adverse impact on farmers and health concerns related to genetically modified food. Sources acknowledged that the talks have hit a hurdle. In the absence of a limited deal ahead of the July 9 deadline, domestic industry will have to brace for a 26% levy, especially with a view within the govt that what the Trump administration is offering in the form of a 10% baseline tariff, applicable to all countries, is not good enough. At the start of the negotiations, the govt was hoping to get zero duty access for several products of India's interests, including textiles, leather goods, pharmaceuticals as well as some engineering goods and auto parts. American negotiators, who are keen that the deal be finalised, have indicated to their Indian counterparts that the Trump administration cannot go down to zero tariffs immediately. In any case, India has sought immunity from future tariff actions once a deal is in place. Unhappiness in India over US President Donald Trump's claim - since rejected by PM Narendra Modi - of having brokered the pause in Operation Sindoor, has also not helped in creating a conducive atmosphere for resolution of trade-related issues.

Murugan conference begins, BJP hits out at DMK for ‘hurdles'

The courts delivered justice for the massive conference held for Tamil deity Lord Murugan in Madurai, BJP state chief Nainar Nagendran said on Sunday while accusing the ruling DMK for trying to obstruct the event. Murugan conference begins, BJP hits out at DMK for 'hurdles' 'We organised this (the conference) to protect our culture. We may not have got justice from the DMK government but we got justice from the courts and the conference is a huge success,' said Nagendran. The Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu (Spiritual Conference of Devotees of Murugan) was embroiled in controversy, with the Tamil Nadu police imposing several conditions, including restricting the 11-day programme to three days. On June 13, the Madurai bench of the Madras high court, granted permission for the event but asked the Hindu Munnani to comply with the conditions laid down by the police in Madurai. The conference organised by right wing outfit Hindu Munnani with the backing of the BJP was held under tight security as scores of people thronged to visit the replicas at the venue made of six abodes (known locally as Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan that's present across Tamil Nadu. The conference to celebrate the Tamil deity was attended by Andhra Pradesh's deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan, former BJP state president K Annamalai and the BJP's ally and Tamil Nadu's main opposition, the AIADMK. 'Certain groups who make fun of our culture and faith and call it secularism will disappear,' Kalyan said speaking in Tamil. Union home minister Amit Shah who on June 8 from Madurai urged people to participate in large numbers is likely to visit TN again in July - his third since April- ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Shah, in his speech a week ago, drew in Lord Murugan over the Thiruparankunram issue. In February, there was tension at a temple (one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan) in Thiruparankundram near Madurai after members of Hindu Munnani held a protest against a demand by a few Muslim organisations to rename the hillock, which is also home to a dargah as Sikander malai (hillock). At the time, the residents belonging to the Hindu and Muslim communities said that they have coexisted peacefully for generations. But Shah said that the DMK had insulted Hindu worshippers here. 'Five lakh people have come today to Madurai for the conference for our ideology despite knowing that they will get wet in the rains today. This is a warning for the ruling government,' Annamalai said. He added that the Hindu religion was under threat referring to the attack in Pahalgham and India's response to Operation Sindoor. This is not the first time that the BJP has drawn in on Lord Murugan. The party made a similar outreach through the vetri vel yatra (victorious spear held by Lord Murugan) which was launched by then president of the BJP state unit L Murugan trying to appropriate the significance of the deity before the Tamil Nadu assembly elections in the yatra received a tepid response, it became the talking point as the then state government, led by BJP's ally the AIADMK, denied permission for the yatra. BJP leaders defied orders and courted arrest as they carried on with the yatra for three weeks across Tamil Nadu. Later, 'Vetrivel, Veeravel' became the BJP's war cry during the election campaign. BJP national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Shah began their rallies by raising the slogan. Sunday's conference comes a year after the DMK, known to have been established with rationalist tenets, also organised a conference for Lord Murugan last year. Last August, the DMK government organised a two-day conference on Lord Murugan as part of its efforts to oppose the BJP painting them as anti-Hindu and to manage the fallout of deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's controversial remarks against Sanatana Dharma.
