The Griffin Canning experience in New York has taken an unfortunate turn for the worse. The 29-year-old right-hander signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal that included up to $1 million in bonuses over the offseason, and the move looked like an absolute steal through the first few weeks of the season. Canning posted a sparkling 2.47 ERA over his first nine starts with the Mets as one of several surprising bright spots on the club's pitching staff. But he's gone the other way in the month-plus since. In his last five starts, Canning has posted an atrocious 6.75 ERA over 19 ⅔ innings pitched, ballooning his 2025 ERA to 3.80. After limiting free passes earlier this season, Canning has reverted back to his wild ways, walking 6.75 batters per nine innings over this rough stretch. His strikeouts per nine innings have dipped to 7.17, culminating in disaster for the former Angel. New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning (L) reacts after being taken out of the ball game by New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza (R) in the fifth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field on Sunday, June 15, 2025. JASON SZENES/NY POST Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has been quick to give Canning the hook during this stretch – he's gone six innings just once over his past five starts and twice couldn't make it out of the third inning. Canning will take on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Saturday as he looks to get back on track. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The Phillies' offense got off to a slow start, but has looked like the stacked lineup we know it to be over the past month-and-a-half, posting a .745 on-base-plus-slugging since May 1, which ranked seventh in baseball before Friday's 10-2 win over the Mets. With how he's looked recently, it's time to fade Canning in a tough matchup. Chris Sale lands on IL after fracturing rib cage in brutal Braves blow

The price of trying to preserve a shutout was costly for Chris Sale. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a fractured left rib cage. He suffered the injury Wednesday when diving off the mound in the ninth inning of the Braves' 5-0 victory against the Mets, The Athletic reported. Sale induced a one-hopper from Juan Soto that might have died on the grass in the triangle between the mound, second base and first base if not for Sale's crazy athleticism. He took a few steps from one side of the rubber to the other and made a full-extension stab. Sale stayed in the game and struck out Pete Alonso before Brandon Nimmo singled to chase Sale and ruin his chance at a shutout. Sale scattered five hits and one walk while striking out seven on 116 pitches over 8 2/3 innings. The Braves fell to a season-worst 10 games under .500 on June 10 but then got hot and won six of their last seven, including a sweep of the then-first-place Mets. Now, a new obstacle. For all the struggles the Braves have endured, Sale has been close to his dominant self. He is 5-4 with a 2.52 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect It's a bad case of déjà vu for the Braves, who have had too many recent seasons marred by injury of late. Reynaldo Lopez, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Spencer Strider have all missed chunks of the season. Sale only made 11 starts from 2020-22 when his potential Hall of Fame career took a turn. He got it back on track with the Braves last season. Left-hander Austin Cox was recalled from the minors to take Sale's spot.
