'Bustling with activity': CM Omar Abdullah hails 'revival' of tourism in Pahalgam; April attack had dented visitor flow

NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the revival of tourism in Kashmir, particularly in Pahalgam, which had seen a sharp decline in visitors following the April 22 terror attack at the Baisaran meadow that claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator. Sharing his observations in a post on X, Abdullah noted a remarkable change in the atmosphere of the popular tourist destination. "The last time I was in Pahalgam I cycled through a market that was all but deserted." he wrote. "Today I came back to a Pahalgam that was bustling with activity. Tourists from various parts of the country competed for space with local picnickers who were enjoying the cool climate & rainy weather.." He credited the visible recovery to the sustained efforts of his administration. " It's very satisfying to see the efforts my colleagues & I have been putting in slowly bearing fruit.," he added. On April 22, brutal terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 Indian tourists and one Nepali national, marking one of the deadliest assaults in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! The massacre drew strong condemnation from world leaders and reignited concerns over cross-border terrorism. In a swift and strategic response, India launched Operation Sindoor during the night of May 6–7, targeting nine terror hideouts of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, and Hizbul Mujahideen across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Though India maintained that its actions were focused and non-escalatory, Pakistan retaliated with drone strikes on Indian cities. In turn, India responded by disabling Pakistan's HQ-9 air defence system. As tensions escalated, border evacuations were initiated. On May 10, following further provocation, India carried out strikes on eleven Pakistani air bases, including Nur Khan, Murid, and Rafiqui. After four intense days of missile and drone exchanges, both nations agreed to a ceasefire, bringing temporary relief amid growing international calls for de-escalation. Operation Sindoor was not just a security measure but also a message of reassurance to the rest of India that Kashmir remains committed to ensuring the safety of its visitors. With improved security, confidence began to return, and the region is now witnessing a gradual but hopeful revival in tourism.

Indian agents linked to Myanmar cyber crime den join stir with victims; trapped include youth from Hyderabad & Sri Lanka; seek Centre's help

HYDERABAD: In a first, Indian agents have joined hands with their victims trapped in the notorious cyber crime hub at KK Park compound in Myanmar's Myawaddy district to send out an SOS, requesting rescue. In an audio message to TOI, one of the victims from Telangana said: "On June 20, we staged a protest. Around 200 security men thrashed us. They took away phones of those who took videos and damaged them. Some people were put in dark rooms." "We are a group of 70-80 people and want to come out (of the compound). Apart from Indians, including some from Hyderabad, there are Sri Lankans too. We had already complained to the embassy and are awaiting response. Those who are working from Telangana are still luring people. They said it was data entry work, but once we entered the compound, we were forced into cyber crime," the victim added. Among those who joined the protest was Rajashaker Shyam Rao, a native of Telangana, who is facing criminal cases in India for his alleged involvement in cyber fraud recruitment. The case was first filed on Feb 23 based on a complaint filed by Kokkirala Lakshma Reddy, whose son Kokkirala Madhukar Reddy, is one of the victims who was subsequently rescued. Madhukar Reddy, 35, was sent illegally into KK2 Park compound where he and 100 other Indian youth were confined under armed watch. Inside the facility, they were coerced into cyber fraud operations targeting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the US. Also, their passports were seized, making escape impossible. Those who resisted were subjected to electric shocks, beatings, and death threats.

Punjab: 60 firms under lens for ₹950-crore GST scam, police investigation on

The Mandi Gobindgarh police in Fatehgarh Sahib have been investigating a multi-crore GST scam, allegedly involving over 60 fictitious companies. The FIR was registered recently on the complaint of a Ludhiana-based businessman, who said that he has now submitted more proof of 'fake' transactions and copies of 70 cheques in the ' ₹ 950-crore scam'. In his complaint to the DGP, Bureau of Investigation and senior Fatehgarh Sahib police authorities, Kashmir Giri of Khanna has sought a thorough and impartial investigation. The Mandi Gobindgarh police had registered an FIR on June 11. Claiming that more than 60 firms were involved in the scam, he alleged collusion between private individuals and government officials. After the registration of the FIR on June 11, the police had formed a special investigation team (SIT). According to Giri, the FIR concerns forged sale and lease deeds executed using the names of his sons through fake firms. He alleged that the key conspirators created shell companies using fake IDs, dummy directors and even forged rent agreements and lease deeds — all without his family's knowledge. He said officials must inquire the origin of the funds used to buy high-value stamp papers and also the role of sub-registrars and others who facilitated such transactions. 'A sale deed dated August 11, 2022, shows a transaction worth over ₹ 1.97 crore and claimed to have been paid through cheques. But such cheques were never issued or encashed. The beneficiary firm is non-functional. A CGST inspection report dated September 30, 2024, verified this, but no further action was taken by authorities,' he mentioned. He further alleged that officials from several private banks helped open accounts for such bogus firms without proper verification. The complaint referenced a high court order dated April 23, directing the Punjab DGP to act on Giri's earlier representation. Besides seeking a thorough probe, he has sought safety of his family. The Mandi Gobindgarh police has slapped Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC. One of the SIT members, seeking anonymity, said an investigation was being conducted. 'Huge suspicious transactions were found during the investigation,' he added.
