Airdrie sign third player from Hamilton Accies this summer as midfielder checks in

Jamie Barjonas is Airdrie's latest summer capture Airdrieonians have completed the signing of midfielder Jamie Barjonas - making him the third player to join the Diamonds after leaving Hamilton Accies his summer. The former Rangers man was released by Accies at the end of his contract in May and has now penned a deal with the Monklands men, keeping him in the Championship after Hamilton's relegation to League One last term. ‌ The 26-year-old joins his old Accies team-mates Sean McGinty and Euan Henderson, who both made the switch to North Lanarkshire earlier this month. ‌ The move to New Broomfield is an exciting one for local lad Barjonas and he said: 'I'm a Cumbernauld boy so I'm quite local. I was at Hamilton last season and everyone knows what happened last season. "From the outside looking in at Airdrie as a football club, it looks like a really well-run club. Even when I was at Kelty Hearts I was on the end of a few bad results - there was a 6-1 here [at New Broomfield]. 'But I'm buzzing to be here – I've spoken to the manager and I think that he's got a real passion and a real vision for the game, so I'm delighted to be here. 'It's a great squad we've got here, with a great manager and great staff, so I'm just really looking forward to the season getting underway.' Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: "Jamie is a player who has great ability. He's strong on the ball and clever. "His quick and positive play will add a different dimension to our midfield and attacking areas."

Airdrie 'saddened' as captain departs to pursue overseas move

Adam Frizzell has left the Diamonds after four years at the club Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell has called time on his spell with the Diamonds to pursue a chance at European football at an overseas club. The Championship side have announced that the midfielder has opted to end a four-year spell at New Broomfield. ‌ Former Kilmarnock man Frizzell, 27, has spent his entire career in Scotland, also featuring for the likes of Livingston, Dumbarton and Queen of the South, but he is ready for a new challenge outwith his homeland. ‌ A club statement read: "With four years and 17 goals under his belt, midfielder Adam Frizzell has called time on his spell at Airdrieonians after being made an offer by an overseas club with a chance of playing European football. "Influential midfielder Frizzell has been a mainstay in the Diamonds side since joining from Dumbarton in 2021, and his consistently classy performances saw him picking up this year's Players Player of the Year and Ian McMillan Player of the Year awards. "Among his 17 strikes for Airdrie were a number of Goal of the Season contenders, with last August's determined solo effort at Dundee every bit as easy on the eye as the previous season's outside-of-the-boot rocket against Raith Rovers. "Adam's influence on the park and in the dressing room saw him named club captain in 2023, a role which he has served with distinction while continuing to display the skill and work ethic which made him a hero to the Diamonds fanbase. "We are naturally saddened to see such an important figure at the club moving on, but we recognise the opportunity that the upcoming move affords to Adam, with the possibility of European football presenting a significant attraction. "We wish him every success with his new team. Thanks for everything, and good luck for the future, Frizz!" Airdrie players returned for pre-season training today and Frizzell's exit follows that of defenders Mason Hancock and Craig Watson, as well as striker Ben Wilson and winger Lewis McGregor, who both departed for moves to TNS and Coleraine, respectively, for undisclosed fees.

Springwells Tennis Club sprung a huge shock earlier this month when they defeated Queen's Park to reach the Calcutta Cup final for the first time since they last won the competition, way back in 1977. ‌ That team – which comprised Tom Russell, Billy Gardiner, David Morton, Willie Scobbie, David Woodhouse and Stuart Ross – is considered one of, if not the, best teams the club has ever produced and this Sunday off ers Springwells' class of 2025 the chance to follow in their footsteps. ‌ David Woodhouse's son Graeme is part of the current team going for glory. Tournament underdogs Springwells have defied all expectations to reach the final after a stunning 4-1 victory over Queens Park. The Airdrie-based team, playing two divisions below their semi-final opponents in the West of Scotland Tennis League, produced a fearless and unified performance on home courts to continue a remarkable cup run that has already seen them topple some of the region's most powerful clubs. On the road to the final, Springwells have eliminated Langside and Queen's Park – both from two divisions above – and most impressively, Rutherglen, the reigning Calcutta Cup champions. Now, the team are one match away from completing a modern-day tennis fairytale. ‌ In last Sunday's Semi-Final, Luke Paul got Springwells off to the perfect start with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 win in the first singles match. Derek Munro followed with a hard-fought three-set thriller, winning 6-0, 4-6 and 10-5 in a championship tie-break. Although Jamie Leslie was narrowly beaten 6-1, 7-5 — battling back from 5-1 down in the second set — the team carried a 2-1 lead into the doubles matches. From there, the underdogs took full control. Derek Munro and Jamie Leslie edged a tense 6-4, 6-3 doubles victory to put Springwells into the final. Graeme Woodhouse and Luke Paul, who came back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 to put the overall match score 4-1 and complete a famous victory over the Queens Park club. 'This team just doesn't know when to quit,' said team member Jamie Boyle. 'We've been underdogs in every round, but we've grown stronger each time. To beat Queens Park, just like we did Langside and Rutherglen — that takes something special.' Springwells will now face Glasgow CTC in the final at Scotstoun Sports Centre. Derek Munro added: 'A special mention goes to team members Jamie Boyle and Neil Aitken who have played a major role in this impressive run to the final, with crucial involvement in each of the previous rounds. Here's hoping the Calcutta Cup is coming home to Airdrie again this weekend.'
