Periya case convict K Manikandan resigns as Kanhangad block panchayat president
K Manikandan, convicted in the Periya double murder case, resigned from his post as Kanhangad Block panchayat president and member on Saturday (June 21, 2025), ahead of a possible disqualification verdict by the Election Commission.
Manikandan submitted his resignation letter to the Block panchayat secretary, stating personal and political reasons. However, in a detailed Facebook post later, he described the move as an ethical decision in line with Communist principles of public service.
His resignation comes as the Election Commission is set to announce its decision on a complaint filed by Congress leader Baburaj, seeking his disqualification following the Ernakulam CBI court's conviction.
Manikandan had been sentenced to five years in prison but the High Court granted him bail and stayed the sentence pending appeal.
Political observers view the resignation as a preemptive move to avoid disqualification which could have political ramifications in the run-up to local body election. UDF sources said the ruling LDF wanted to avoid providing the opposition with ammunition during the polls.
Party sources confirmed that permission had already been given for his resignation, but it was delayed until after the Nilambur by-election. With only a few months remaining in the current term, no by-election will be held for his ward.
In his Facebook note, Manikandan likened public service to navigating stormy seas and described his resignation as part of a 'trasnition' in public life. He thanked supporters and asserted that his departure was in keeping with the values of the party and the responsibilities entrusted to him.

"Pakistan will not dare": Eknath Shinde lauds Modi govt's efforts against terrorism
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 22 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday asserted that Pakistan or terrorists would 'never dare' to orchestrate terrorist attacks given the 'reaction' by India against the ghastly attack in Pahalgam. He said that India and its armed forces are against the killings of civilians and, thus, targeted only terrorist outfits during Operation Sindoor. 'The way centre gave action to the have also understood. Terrorists or Pakistan will not dare do this again. Our armed forces carried out a very precise attack on the terrorist outfits. We are always against killing innocents,' Shinde told ANI. He said that even Pakistan has learned that it would get a strong response for its misadventures. 'We responded strongly during Operation Sindoor. Ab Pakistan bhi jaan gaya hai ki pehle ki tarah yeh Congress ka haath nahi hai, yeh Modi ka hathora (hammer) hai (Pakistan has also learned that this is not Congress' hand, but Modi's hammer),' Shinde said. He further lauded the central government for sending seven multi-party parliamentary delegations across 32 countries to present India's stand against terrorism. 'Our government sent seven delegations to 32 different countries to present India's stand and its role (against cross-border terrorism). 32 countries have supported us,' the Maharashtra CM said. Shinde, who came to flag off the Sarhad Shauryathon in Kargil's Dras, said he was apprehensive about the marathon being organised, given the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, but was glad people showed up. 'I came here to flag off the Sarhad Shauryathon in Dras, Kargil. I thought that because of the Pahalgam incident, the marathon might not have taken place, but many people had gathered there for the marathon. Organising such a marathon in a remote and hilly area like this is a very big thing. This will give a positive message as people were scared after the Pahalgam incident,' he added. (ANI)

Top Democrats Not Briefed Before US Strikes On Iranian Nuclear Sites: Report
US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday night, notifying top congressional Republicans, but not Democrats, before the attacks, CNN reported. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune were briefed before the strikes, per GOP sources. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries were reportedly notified shortly before Trump's public announcement, after the bombs had dropped, as per Politico. Senator Mark Warner and Representative Jim Himes, leaders on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees, respectively - both part of the "Gang of Eight" - were similarly kept in the dark until after the strike. The strikes, which targeted Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, have sharply divided lawmakers along party lines. Republicans largely supported Trump's decision, praising the action as decisive and necessary. Johnson defended the strikes on X, "Leaders in Congress were aware of the urgency of this situation and the Commander-in-Chief evaluated that the imminent danger outweighed the time it would take for Congress to act. The President fully respects the Article I power of Congress, and tonight's necessary, limited, and targeted strike follows the history and tradition of similar military actions under presidents of both parties". John Thune, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and several GOP lawmakers also praised the action. Alexandria-based Representative Rick Crawford confirmed he had been in touch with the White House beforehand. Democrats responded with sharp criticism. Senator Warner condemned the strike as reckless, carried out "without consulting Congress, without a clear strategy, and without explaining to the American people what's at stake." He called on the president to immediately appear before Congress to outline his objectives. Senator Tim Kaine, who had introduced a resolution last week requiring Trump to seek congressional approval before any action against Iran, called on his intent to force a Senate vote. "I will push for all Senators to vote on whether they are for this third idiotic Middle East war," he said. Representative Sean Casten of Illinois went as far as to call the action an " impeachable offense," while Independent Senator Bernie Sanders called it " grossly unconstitutional." House Minority Leader Jeffries warned of retaliation against US troops in the region and accused Trump of misleading the country. "Donald Trump promised to bring peace to the Middle East. He has failed to deliver," Jeffries said. "The risk of war has now dramatically increased." Despite the near-unanimous Democratic opposition, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the exception. "As I've long maintained, this was the correct move by @POTUS," Fetterman posted on X. "Iran is the world's leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities." The Israel-Iran conflict, now in its 10th day, intensified over the weekend as the United States entered the battlefield. President Trump ordered airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan using B-2 bombers from Guam. He called the mission a "spectacular military success," claiming the facilities were "obliterated." The strikes came just after Israel launched over 150 missiles at Iran's Isfahan site on June 21, its second attack in eight days, reportedly killing scientists and damaging nuclear infrastructure. In response, Iran fired a wave of missiles and drones at Israeli targets, including 27 ballistic missiles aimed at Ben Gurion Airport, some of which breached Israel's famed Iron Dome.
