DWP pensioners get Migration Notice letter as benefits end
Tax Credits ended on April 5, 2025, the first of this year's legacy benefit closures. Housing Benefit is also ending and is being replaced by Universal Credit (except in certain circumstances).
Claimants must switch to Universal Credit when they receive their migration notice letter, or payments will cease, and time is fast running out.
Those who miss their deadline date can still move to Universal Credit later, but they won't receive important financial protections designed to prevent them from losing money.
These rules only apply to those who receive a letter - and the protection helps those who receive less under Universal Credit than their current benefits. For example, if someone receives £600 from Tax Credits but would only be entitled to £400 under Universal Credit, they can receive a £200 top-up to maintain their current level.
Transitional protection sounds short-term, but it actually lasts until the amount you get in Universal Credit is more than the amount you used to get on your old benefits – for example, because Universal Credit amounts are increased in line with inflation each year, or you become eligible for more support.
But, it only continues while your circumstances stay the same - and can be lost due to a significant life change that causes your eligibility to be reassessed – for example, you move in with a partner.
What is Managed Migration?
The move is part of the DWP's ongoing managed migration programme, which aims to move all claimants of legacy benefits to Universal Credit by March 2026. The full details are listed here.
These include
Child Tax Credits
Housing Benefit
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Income Support
Working Tax Credits
There has been significant confusion about the transition process, with many recipients at risk of losing their transitional protection if they fail to respond within three months of receiving their notice.
The DWP plans to send migration notices to all legacy benefit claimants by the end of this year. The migration notice will detail the exact date one needs to make a claim.
Those needing assistance with their migration can contact the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline.

Reclaiming Housing Benefit
Your Housing Benefit will be ending 2 weeks after your deadline date. However, you may be eligible to reclaim Housing Benefit within 3 months if:
your Housing Benefit is stopped, and you have not claimed Universal Credit
you claimed before your deadline date but were not entitled to Universal Credit
you stop receiving Universal Credit
You can get advice from your local council about backdating your Housing Benefit claim. Your claim can only be backdated for up to 3 months.
Find out more about Housing Benefit eligibility.
Claiming Pension Credit instead of Universal Credit
You can choose to claim Pension Credit instead of Universal Credit. If your claim to Pension Credit is accepted, you:
cannot then apply for Universal Credit
will not get Pension Credit transitional protection
may receive less financial support
Find out more about Pension Credit. You can also use the Pension Credit calculator to work out how much you might get.
Pension Credit is one of the most underclaimed benefits, and is the gateway to lots of pension age means-tested benefits, such as Winter Fuel Payments, so it's important to claim.
What you get if you receive a DWP managed migration notice
On Universal Credit, most people are entitled to the same amount they received from their previous benefits, or more.
Your Universal Credit payment is made up of a standard allowance and any extra amounts that apply to you, for example if you:
have children
need help paying your rent
have a disability or health condition which prevents you from working
If you have a disability or health condition which means you get a disability benefit, you may get an extra amount of Universal Credit. You do not need to provide a fit note or have a Work Capability Assessment (WCA).
Removal of the benefit cap
The benefit cap is normally applied to Universal Credit and other benefits. This is a limit on the total amount of benefit you can get. However, the benefit cap does not apply if:
you're State Pension age
you're still working
you received a Migration Notice letter
If the amount you were entitled to on tax credits was more than you get on Universal Credit, you get a top up.
It's paid to you automatically if you got a Migration Notice letter and made a Universal Credit claim by your deadline date.

DWP reviewing six benefits for 'cases of fraud and error'
The DWP's latest report, Fraud and error in the benefit system, details overpayments and underpayments in the welfare system over the 2024 and 2025 financial year. It specifically called out six benefits with the department noting it will be "measuring sample cases from six benefits for 'unfulfilled eligibility' over the current financial year" according to the Daily Record for the next report due in May 2026. These include: Universal Credit Housing Benefit Pension Credit State Pension Personal Independence Payment Disability Living Allowance for children According to the recent report an estimated £9.5 billion was wrongly paid out by the Department through overpayments or underpayments, equating to 3.3% of the total benefits expenditure. This figure is a slight decrease from the previous year's £9.7 billion, which was 3.6%. The DWP previously highlighted: "Sometimes people tell us the wrong information or do not tell us when their circumstances change. Reporting accurate information and providing evidence may change the amount of benefit people are eligible for and in some circumstances, they may be eligible for more money. "However, we cannot calculate the correct amount unless people tell us accurately about their circumstances. This means that people are not eligible for increases in the amount of money they receive until we have the correct information.' The DWP recognises three types of fraud and error, each with their own definition: Fraud These are claims where: Unfulfilled eligibility This is a claimant error, where an overpayment has occurred because the claimant has provided inaccurate or incomplete information. Or failed to report a change in their circumstances, but there is no evidence of fraudulent intent on the claimant's part. Official Error

Families on Universal Credit have days left to apply for free £300 vouchers this month – check if you're eligible
THOUSANDS of families on Universal Credit can claim up to £300 this month. This leg-up comes from the government's Household Support Fund (HSF) - a huge £742 million fund going straight to councils across England. 2 The HSF is a government-backed scheme designed to help vulnerable households with essentials like food, energy bills and other living costs. Each local council is given the freedom to decide how to distribute the money, making sure it directly helps the people who need it most in their area. City of Doncaster Council is distributing a one‑off cash payment through HSF. Those typically eligible for this support are already receiving one of the following: Housing benefit Local Council Tax Reduction Universal Credit which includes the housing element Means-tested free school meals Households on Universal Credit can receive food vouchers worth £100 if they have one dependent child. Those with two children will pick up £200, while households with three or more children will be given £300 to help cover food costs. City of Doncaster Council defines a dependent child as one for whom you receive Child Benefit. Besides families with children, other eligible households - including those without children - can receive £100 to help cover energy bills. The council is also allocating £150,000 towards local food banks and its hygiene bank. Families can get FREE washing machines, fridges and kids' beds or £200 payments this summer – and you can apply now An additional £100,000 will boost community hubs, helping vulnerable households right in the community. Meanwhile, a huge £400,000 is now earmarked for the updated Local Assistance Scheme. How can people get the payment? Those who have received help from the Household Support Fund in the past - and still meet the criteria - will not need to apply. Instead, the payment will automatically hit their bank accounts. But they will need to contact the council if their bank details have changed. Those previously paid by cheque will receive the payment by cheque - unless they provide the council with their bank details. Others will need to apply between now and July. Click here to claim a Household Support Fund payment. Can those who live outside Doncaster claim support? Yes, councils throughout the country are actively assisting families through the Household Support Fund scheme. Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council is giving thousands of families a helping hand - offering free washing machines, fridges and kids' beds or £200 towards the cost of energy. Those in Leeds can get payments of up to £150. By using the government's council locator tool, it's easy to find out which local authorities are offering support and the eligibility criteria. Household Support Fund explained Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund. If you're battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline. The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living. Every council in England has been given a share of £742million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households. Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments. In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families. Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying. Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income. The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer. The last round ran until the end of March 2025, but was extended. The most current round is running between April 2025 and March 2026. 2

Full list of DWP PIP and Universal Credit payment changes on the way next year
New rules have been proposed to reform the way PIP and Universal Credit is handed out. In a bill published on Wednesday, the government said they will be giving additional protection to the most vulnerable, as well as enough time for people to plan for the future. Labour said they wanted to fix the 'broken social security system', with millions not working. Ending reassessments for those classed as having a severe condition who will never be able to work. They will also be paid the higher rate of Universal Credit health top up of £97 per week. The DWP said they are also bringing in the Right to Try Guarantee which will mean trying to work will not lead to reassessment. Universal Credit rates are also set to be rebalanced by reducing health element for new claims to £50 from April. All of those affected by the reforms will be offered support from a dedicated Pathways to Work adviser. The DWP said: 'All of those affected by reforms will be actively contacted and given the offer of a conversation about their support needs, goals and aspirations; offered one-to-one follow-on support, and given help to access additional work, health and skills support that can meet their needs.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The proposed package to PIP includes: Reintroducing reassessments for people on incapacity benefits who have the capability to work so they are not written off. Changing the eligibility requirement to a minimum score of four on at least one of the daily living activities to receive the daily living element of the benefit. Potentially delaying access to the health element of Universal Credit until someone is aged 22. Reinvesting savings from this into work support and training opportunities through the Youth Guarantee. The DWP said since the pandemic the number of PIP awards has more than doubled to 34,000 a month, with around 1,000 people signing on to it everyday. There has been a surge in anxiety and depression being reported as the main condition. More Trending The government is also aiming to get one million young people in work, education or training. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall said: 'Our social security system is at a crossroads. Unless we reform it, more people will be denied opportunities, and it may not be there for those who need it. 'This legislation represents a new social contract and marks the moment we take the road of compassion, opportunity and dignity.
