A travel expert has revealed where Greece 's best underrated hidden gem is and it's a destination that many people miss.
Many people are looking to get off-the-beaten-track this summer and escape the crowds flooding popular spots like Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos.
But where's Greece's best-kept secret?
According to Ed Sharp, head of Car Hire at TravelSupermarket, its the 'scenic' Peloponnese peninsula.
He says: 'One of Greece's best-kept secrets is the Peloponnese peninsula. Connected to the mainland via the Corinth Canal and the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, this scenic region is packed with ancient ruins, hidden beaches and mountain villages.
'Public transport in the area is sparse and the best sites are spread out and best explored at your own leisure.'
Ed recommends flying to Athens Airport then taking a one and a half hour drive to Nafplio which he describes as the 'ideal base'.
Located on the southern tip of the mainland, the Peloponnese is the perfect destination to experience 'authentic Greek culture' says Lonely Planet.
And the region is the ideal hotspot to dive into Greek mythology. In the west of the Peloponnese is ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games.
It's also home to Mycenae, the base of King Agamennon and Messini, a 4th century city.
The peninsula also has some spectacular mountain villages where tourists can taste local delicacies and explore ravines.
When it comes to beaches, visitors are spoilt for choice. While the region's best beaches are located on Elafonisos, an islet that's a short ferry ride from the mainland, the area's coastline is vast and varied.
Voidokilia Beach in Messinia is a 'perfect sandy crescent', says Lonely Planet, with clear waters.
If you're a fan of olives, make sure to fit in a visit to Kalamata, the birthplace of one of Greece's most famous varieties.
The region is also famous for honey and tourists can join a food tour to understand more about the production process.
Nafplio was once Greece's capital and it's one of the country's prettiest spots with coastal views and whitewashed homes.

Due to its coastal location, visitors can expect to see menus centred around seafood dishes, including grilled octopus and fried calamari.
Daniel Carrizalez, who moved to Nafplio from London in 2010, previously told MailOnline Travel that the city 'feels very safe'.
The expat described the city as the 'perfect blend of culture, scenery and close-knit community'.
He revealed that his favourite taverna in the coastal city is Bounos.Psarosavouras which has views of the sea.

Greece remains a go-to summer holiday destination, with tourists drawn by its crystal-clear waters, ancient ruins and laid-back lifestyle. With record-breaking numbers seen in 2024 – 40 million visitors bringing in almost £20 billion in revenue – the figures for 2025 are expected to be even higher. Now new research shows which of the thousands of Greek islands are surging in interest for holidaymakers. The travel experts at Iglu Cruise have compared Google Trends search data between 2024 and 2025 and narrowed down a top 10 that is really heating up. Among the top islands, there's a mix of classic holiday spots and some new favourites. The destination that saw the biggest increase was Paros, with 283 per cent more people searching for 'holidays to Paros' in the first week of June this year compared to 12 months ago. The island, part of the Cyclades, is known for pristine beaches, classic whitewashed villages, and its prized marble – the same that was used to sculpt the Venus de Milo. 'Paros is easily becoming a top competitor of Mykonos,' said Iglu Cruise. 'Add in windsurfing at Golden Beach and hidden mountain villages like Lefkés, and you've got an island that truly has it all.' While Paros has exploded in popularity, the next island has also seen a huge boost in people searching for breaks on its shores. Skiathos is a nature lover's paradise with a lush pine forest and more than 60 incredible beaches – and it has seen a 110 per cent rise in searches. Culture lovers will head to the historic Monastery of Evangelistria but whatever your interests, be sure to jump on a boat tour, stopping at beaches and caves only accessible by water. Searches for holidays in Mykonos also more than doubled compared to the same period in 2024. The renowned party island still enthralls with its buzzing nightlife but there are also chic boutiques and (rather more sedate) windmills. In fourth place is the postcard-perfect Santorini, with its cliffside villages and caldera views ensuring it remains a crowd favourite. Searches for a getaway are up 89 per cent. While there, be sure to hike from Fira to Oia for an unforgettable sunset. The ancient ruins, brilliant food and rugged gorges of Greece's largest island, Crete, have helped it garner a 55 per cent increase in search interest. The other islands rounding out the top 10 are Rhodes (searches up 53 per cent), Corfu (52 per cent), Kefalonia (44 per cent), Kos (26 per cent) and Zante (13 per cent). This week, British tourists escaping to a popular Greek island this summer were being urged to double-check their flight times after one visitor was left stranded due to a strict airport curfew. Night flights from Zante are heavily restricted to protect the island's loggerhead sea turtles. The curfew, which has been in place since the early 1990s, aims to minimise disruptions to their nesting patterns at night on Zante's southern beaches, especially during the busy summer months.

I went to the Greek island that's the ‘birthplace of marathons' and ran the most beautiful 13 miles in the world
I'M 16 kilometres in and almost sorry I only have five more to go. On my right are the sparkling seas and ancient fortifications of Rhodes; on my left, craggy hills rise up into the blue sky. 6 6 Around me are 4,500 sweaty other runners, all soaking up the beautiful course that is the TUI Rhodes half-marathon. I've run a lot of different places — along New York's Brooklyn Bridge, around France's Mont Saint-Michel, even in the moat at London's Tower of London — but this is easily one of the most beautiful. Starting in the middle of town, the two large 10km loops take the runners (some who will do it twice to complete a marathon) along the water's edge, past the town's old fortified walls, around the Rhodes Windmills, before throwing a hill or two in there to really get the heart pumping. I have always wanted to do a run in Greece — it's the birthplace of the marathon. And thanks to the stunning scenery, perfect climate and cheers of supportive locals, plus 700 volunteers who beam as they hand out gels and water along the way, I'm glad I've finally made it out here. At 20km in, I see the pro marathon runners on the other side of the course. And I realise that, thanks to the trail, these gazelles are likely to lap some of the slower half-marathon runners. I better pick up my pace. Soon, it's 500 metres to go, 400, 300 . . . suddenly, in the crowd, I spot my husband cheering me on and I give it one last push, thundering over the line in 1hr 55mins. I'm happy with the result, and even happier that, for the rest of the day, I have the Greek sun — and even more importantly, Greek food — to revive me. But if you get tired of relaxing, I would heartily recommend getting out of the hotel and exploring the local area. The Old Town in Rhodes is filled with fantastic shops and restaurants — and we fill up post-marathon with mouth-watering dolmades, tzatziki, stews and a final delectable bite of baklava. Meanwhile, you can sign up to olive oil or wine tasting courses, explore Lindos Acropolis and hike up the mountains that dot around the island. Our own trip is over too quickly, and we sit by our personal pool until the very last moment when the taxi arrives to drive us half an hour to the airport. But there's no chance I'll be forgetting this holiday. After all, unlike other trips, I have a physical medal as my souvenir. And we do all deserve a little reward now and then.
