Technologies to shape airport experience, say experts

The Hindu05-06-2025

With the number of air passengers steadily growing India, transformative technologies like biometric-based Digi Yatra, AI-powered digital twins, integrated multi-modal transport systems, and Net Zero, LEED-certified terminals would shape airport experiences, said experts.
They also stressed on the need to strengthen digital ecosystems to manage rising cybersecurity risks which has been identified as a crucial area of focus.
'India's aviation growth presents a dual challenge—securing borders while easing the journey for millions of law-abiding passengers. In Mumbai alone, we clear 22,000–25,000 international travellers daily, averaging 10-minute customs clearance. Our aim is to cut this to 5 minutes,' said Joseph Gouda (IRS), Joint Director, Mumbai Customs while speaking at a round table discussion on 'Reimagining airport passenger infrastructure through innovation, technology and sustainability' organised ahead of the Inter Passenger Terminal Expo 2025 by Media Fusion.
'By adopting AI, ML, RFID, and Advanced Passenger Information systems, we are shifting from manual checks to smarter, targeted interventions. This transformation will make our infrastructure both more secure and passenger-friendly—essential for India's aviation future,' he added.
Stating that India has transformed biometric travel with Digi Yatra, where one's face becomes one's boarding pass, Nitin Sharma, DVP – Business Development, of global security group dormakaba, said they were solving complex challenges—like group travel and one-click gate registration—while ensuring data privacy with automatic purging post-flight.
'Innovations like wider gates to prevent tailgating, now powered by AI and ML, were born from India's unique needs and are setting global benchmarks. With under 10% of the population currently flying, we are preparing for exponential growth by scaling smart, cost-efficient technologies. India's rapid pace of innovation is not only enhancing domestic operations but creating airport solutions the world is now adopting,' he said.
On the evolving airport infrastructure development in the country, Geetha Priya G, Senior Director – Infrastructure & Airports, JLL India said there was a need to build infrastructure that was resilient, adaptive and efficient.
'Greenfield airports offer the luxury of blank canvas while brownfield sites push us to rethink with constraints for unique, smart and adaptive design solutions. The future lies in modular construction, digital first terminal cores that centralize operations, passenger movement and energy management.'
'Early-stage collaboration is critical—drawing insights from operations, policy shifts, and tech trends helps avoid costly course corrections. We need a terminal design language rooted in sustainability, with built-in readiness for climate volatility, aging demographics, rapid digital changes and hybrid spaces that can handle intensity and downtime with equal ease. Aligning this vision with financial models that attract private investment is key to delivering infrastructure that's future-ready and locally responsive,' she added.

Hero Splendour or Honda Activa, all bikes to get ABS as standard feature from this date

In a landmark move to enhance road safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced that from January 1, 2026, all new two-wheelers sold in India, irrespective of engine capacity, must come equipped with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS). In addition, dealerships will be required to provide two BIS-certified helmets with every new purchase, one for the rider and one for the ABS is mandatory only for two-wheelers with engine capacities above 125cc. With the new mandate, this safety feature will be made compulsory across the board, including for scooters and motorcycles in the entry-level segment. ABS prevents wheel lock-up during sudden braking, significantly reducing the risk of skidding or losing control, especially in emergencies or on slippery surfaces. Studies have shown that ABS can reduce accident risk by 35 to 45 decision is driven by alarming road safety statistics. Two-wheelers accounted for 44.5% of all road accident fatalities in India in 2022, with many of these deaths attributed to head injuries and loss of vehicle control during braking. To further address these concerns, the government has also made it compulsory for dealerships to supply two BIS-certified helmets at the time of delivery. Presently, only one helmet is All the budget-friendly bikes and scooters in the 100-125cc range, which constitute the majority of two-wheeler sales in India, may see a price increase, depending on the hardware upgrades required for compliance, such as the addition of front disc brakes and ABS ministry is expected to release detailed implementation guidelines and technical standards soon to ensure a smooth rollout of the new rules. Australian wool prices firm amid low supply, steady demand this week

Australian wool auctions saw firmer prices this week as limited supply met slightly improved demand. With only Melbourne and Sydney in operation and Fremantle sitting out, just over 20,000 bales were offered, of which approximately 95 per cent were sold. The market response was positive as all wool types and descriptions experienced price gains, despite buyers exercising caution. Merino wool prices rose by 10 to 20 Australian cents (ac), with high-quality lots fetching 30 to 40ac more. In contrast, lower-end types were 0 to 10ac dearer. Chinese top makers led buying activity, supported by traders and stronger China indent demand, likely reflecting hesitancy in long-term commitments due to low volume and inconsistent quality, the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) said in its commentary for week 51 of the current wool marketing season. Australian wool prices rose this week amid tight supply and slightly improved demand. Around 95 per cent of the 20,000+ bales offered were sold. Merino wools gained up to 40ac, while RWS-certified lots attracted premiums of 150ac. Crossbred and carding types also saw modest gains. China and European buyers were active. Next week, over 32,600 bales will be auctioned across all three centres. European demand for Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified wool continued to command significant premiums, particularly in the 18 to 21 micron category, with some lots selling up to 150ac above standard types, the AWI commentary added. Crossbred wool performed solidly, with 28–30 micron types gaining 15ac (3.5 to 4 per cent), and finer varieties rising by 5 to 10ac. Coarser types also edged up by 5ac, while carding types posted gains of up to 10ac/clean kg. Next week's auction will see over 32,600 bales offered across all three selling centres.
