How Long Before This Thing Is Roaming Around Exterminating People?

Gulf Insider23-02-2025

A video of a humanoid automaton coming to life has gone viral on X, and has people asking how long before this thing is weaponised?
The synthetic human-like creature, named Clone Alpha, was created by a company called Clone Robotics, which seems to have directly taken inspiration from the dystopian TV show Westworld.
Even its company logo is the same as imagery in the show's opening credits.
The company claims that the 'muscuskeletal androids' are designed designed to help around the home with menial tasks including cleaning, washing clothes, unloading the dishwasher and making sandwiches.

However, it is also 'capable of witty dialogue,' as well as 'following you around.'

The machine can also charge itself and comes 'equipped with the Telekinesis training platform to let you teach your Clone Alpha new skills.'

The Clone Robotics company says it will produce 279 of the creatures and is taking pre orders. The retail price is not listed, but a robot hand they also sell is listed for $2800.

Israeli strike on Tehran jail ‘irresponsible': French prisoner's sister

Paris – An Israeli strike on Evin prison in Tehran on Monday is completely irresponsible and puts prisoners 'in mortal danger', said Noemie Kohler, the sister of French national Cecile Kohler who is jailed there. Iran's judiciary said Israeli strikes left sections of the facility damaged and Israel's defence minister confirmed the army was targeting it. Cecile Kohler has been held along with her partner Jacques Paris in Evin since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject. Overall, Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals in what some Western governments describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West. Most are held in Evin, a large, heavily fortified complex notorious among activists for rights abuses. It is located in a northern district of the Iranian capital. 'This strike is completely irresponsible. Cecile, Jacques and all the prisoners are in mortal danger,' Noemie Kohler told AFP. 'This is really the worst thing that could have happened,' she added. 'We have no news, we don't know if they are still alive, we're panicking,' Noemie Kohler said. She urged the French authorities to 'condemn these extremely dangerous strikes' and secure the release of the French prisoners. She also expressed concern about the risk of 'chaos' and 'riots'. Noemie Kohler has tirelessly campaigned to secure the release of her sister and her sister's partner Jacques Paris. Chirinne Ardakani, a lawyer for the Kohler family, denounced the strikes as 'illegal'. 'The risk of riots, general confusion and reprisals by the security forces against the insurgent prisoners raises fears of bloodshed,' she told AFP. 'Both sides are playing with people's lives.' The Iranian judiciary's website, Mizan Online, said that the prison buildings remained 'under control.'

Beijing issues weather warning for hottest days of year

Beijing – Beijing residents sought shade and cooled off in canals on Monday as authorities issued the second-highest heat warning for the Chinese capital on one of its hottest days of the year so far. China has endured a string of extreme summers in recent years, with heatwaves baking northern regions even as parts of the south have seen catastrophic rain and flooding. Authorities in the city of 22 million people urged the public to take precautions, with temperatures expected to peak at around 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) on Monday. 'It's been really hot lately, especially in the past few days,' intern Li Weijun told AFP on Monday afternoon. The 22-year-old said he had stopped wearing formal clothes to work and delayed his daily exercise until after 10:00 pm to stay safe. 'I think it's related to climate change, and maybe also to the damage done to nature,' he said. An orange heat warning — the second-highest in a three-tier system — was issued on Monday as officials encouraged people to limit outdoor activity and drink more fluids to avoid heatstroke. Construction workers should 'shorten the amount of time consecutively spent at labour', while elderly, sick or weakened individuals ought to 'avoid excessive exertion', according to the guidelines. Zhang Chen, 28, said she carried an umbrella outdoors to prevent sunburn. 'I used to ride a bike, but once it gets this hot, I basically stop doing that,' the IT worker told AFP. Despite the beating sun, legions of delivery drivers zipped through downtown areas at noon to bring sustenance to Beijing's office workers. A few lazed on the backs of their scooters in a shady spot, while elsewhere, people cooled off with ice creams or by taking a dip in the city's canals. – Climate giant – Beijing is still a few degrees short of breaking its record for the hottest-ever June day, set at 41.1C in 2023. Human greenhouse gas emissions are driving climate change that causes longer, more frequent and more intense heatwaves. China is the world's largest producer of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, though it has pledged to bring its emissions to a peak by the end of this decade and to net zero by 2060. The country has also emerged as a global leader in renewable energy in recent years as it seeks to pivot its massive economy away from highly polluting coal consumption. In a shady spot near an office building, 42-year-old Lucy Lu spent her lunch break with friends, kicking a shuttlecock through the air — a traditional Chinese game known as 'jianzi'. 'I was born and raised in Beijing, and summer here has always been like this,' she said. 'But I do think when the temperature goes over 40C, there should be some time off or work-from-home options to reduce the risk of heatstroke.'
