Watch: Neymar sent off for ‘Hand of God' handball
Neymar was sent off in what could be his final appearance for boyhood club Santos after trying to emulate Argentine great Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' by punching the ball into the goal.
The Brazil international has spoken about the impact Maradona had on his career after meeting him as a child with the pair pictured together before the Argentina icon's death five years ago.
However, the inspiration taken by Neymar appeared to backfire when he appeared to intentionally cheat by scoring with his hand in Santos' Brazilian league game with Botafogo.
The match was locked at 0-0 in the 76th minute when Neymar tried to pounce on a rebound under pressure from Botafogo defender David Ricardo. In an effort to get to the ball first, the 33-year-old Brazilian threw his arm towards the ball and punched it goalwards, before being kicked in the head by Ricardo's leading foot.
Neymar collapsed to the turf in the goalmouth as team-mates celebrated, but the Botafogo players were furious and quickly protested to the referee that the goal had been scored by a handball.
After several minutes of treatment, Neymar got back to his feet and was shown a yellow card by referee Davi de Olivereira Lacerda. But having already been booked in first-half injury time, Neymar was given his marching orders as he was sent off in what could be his last outing for Santos.
With the Brazilian league now on hold until mid-July because of the international break and inaugural Club World Cup, Neymar's contract will expire at the end of June and a move to another club could be on the horizon.
He was quick to hold his hands up and take the blame for the sending off, with matters not helped by the fact that Botafogo went on to score a winner after his dismissal through Artur's 86th-minute effort.
'I made a mistake, forgive me!' he posted on social media.
'Today, if I hadn't been sent off, I'm sure we would have gotten the three points. You can count these three points against me!'
Neymar has only started the one match for Santos since returning from injury last month, having rejoined the club from Saudi Arabia side Al-Hilal - having suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, and the suspension will rule him out of Santos's match against Fortaleza on Thursday before the mid-season break kicks in.
Santos are 18th in the league having lost seven of their 11 matches.

Atletico Madrid vs Botafogo prediction, odds and betting offer
Atletico Madrid will be looking to get a result to secure a spot in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup as they face surprise package Botafogo At the Club World Cup, Botafogo find themselves in an enviable position, needing just a draw against Atletico Madrid in their final Group B match to unexpectedly top the group. The Brazilian team caused quite a stir by defeating European champions PSG 1-0 early Friday morning, building on their previous victory over Seattle Sounders. Many expected PSG to comfortably overcome Botafogo, but it was Igor Jesus who stole the spotlight, scoring the decisive goal while PSG managed to win 10 corners. This unexpected turn of events has left Botafogo in control of the group, against all predictions that had pegged the European powerhouses to dominate. With PSG and Atletico Madrid both eyeing top spots, a win for each in their concluding matches would see all three teams level on nine points. This scenario would push the group standings to be determined by head-to-head records and goal difference. Atletico's disastrous 4-0 defeat to PSG in their opening game might prove costly. Diego Simeone's squad now face the daunting task of needing a three-goal victory against Botafogo unless Seattle can pull off an upset against PSG. After finding their rhythm with a 3-1 triumph over Seattle on Thursday night, Atletico Madrid must now unleash an offensive barrage to keep their tournament hopes alive. ‘Pitbull' Jay Stansfield ready to sink his teeth into Holland and fire England to Euro final, says Brooke Norton-Cuffy
BROOKE NORTON-CUFFY is desperate to see 'pitbull' Jay Stansfield sink his teeth into Holland. The 23-goal Birmingham City striker, 22, was finally let off the leash by Lee Carsley against Spain and handed his first tournament start. 3 3 Despite not getting on the scoresheet himself, he showed his bite is worse than his bark as his tireless display helped England U21s to a feisty 3-1 victory. The Spanish defence could be forgiven for thinking they were up against a hound from hell as Stansfield battered and pressed them, covering 10.1kms, throughout his 85 minutes on the pitch. And his team-mate Norton-Cuffy, 21, believes the hotshot is ready to take another chunk out of the Dutch in Wednesday's European Championship semi-final in Bratislava. Describing Stansfield's performance, the Genoa full-back said: 'Absolute pitbull. He was excellent and that just sums up the group really. Obviously he hasn't played but you saw him out there. 'The main thing is when you're not playing, don't sulk about it too much. Come on and show why you should be playing. He's come on and done that. 'On the ball he was good, he was running back and making challenges on their centre mids, on their centre-backs and he really, really helped us. He was excellent.' Having underwhelmed in the group stages, holders England were sensational as they slapped the Spanish. Though Norton-Cuffy insists that there is a whole lot more to come as Carsley's men look to defend their Euro crown. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS He said: 'There's loads. On Saturday you saw what we can do and what we're capable of doing. 'We didn't, I'll say steamroll the group stage, there were a lot of ups and downs but you still saw glimpses of what we can do. It was just about being ruthless and putting chances in the back of the net. England u21s clash with Germany SUSPENDED as stadium plunged into semi-darkness and players taken off pitch 'We did that a bit better against Spain. We had loads of chances and it's coming. We feel like we're really gonna do well.' He continued: 'We knew what we were capable of and we still know what we're capable of. The belief in the group is very high. 'We have a bunch of talented boys and we always stick together. I don't feel us England boys go into any game feeling like underdogs because we know what we're capable of. 'We're good enough to go out and dominate every game we play. The belief is always there, we want to go out and win and it doesn't matter who the opponents are, we'll try and play our style and play attacking, exciting football and try to win.' 3 Norton-Cuffy is still waiting for his first start in Slovakia but has impressed in each of his three outings off the bench. Though he claims that Carsley is a master of keeping everybody motivated, even those yet to get a kick. The ex- Arsenal academy ace, who made 14 Serie A appearances for Genoa last season following his move from the Emirates, said: 'He makes everyone feel involved. He's very, very good at making everyone feel involved. 'In tournament football, you obviously bring a lot of people and everyone can't play, but you know you're still a massive part of it. 'Towards the end of the tournament, you're going to need everyone. We're seeing that now, a lot of subs are coming on, playing and making a big impact and changing the game. He emphasises that a lot and for us just to stick together, keep our heads and he manages that very well.' England's Under-21 Euros squad in FULL ENGLAND are looking to retain their status as Under-21 European champions this summer in Slovakia.
