Bengaluru's 'good thief', who stole over Rs 22 lakh gold, says he did this to fund 20 school kids' education

Time of India22-05-2025

In a revelation that seems lifted from a crime thriller, Bengaluru police were taken by surprise when a 35-year-old
serial housebreaker
claimed he resorted to theft not for personal enrichment, but to fund the education of underprivileged school and college students, reported TOI.
The accused, identified as
Shivu alias Shivarappan
from Begur, was recently arrested by the Byadarahalli police along with his accomplices Anil and Vivek. The trio is linked to a series of house break-ins across the city's west division, with Shivu alone facing charges in at least 11 cases, according to the report.

When police finally caught up with Shivu, he said: "I used the money to pay the fees of 20 poor students studying in schools and colleges," Shivu claimed. His 'Robin Hood-style' justification was met with disbelief, but not outright dismissal.
"We've heard all kinds of stories from arrested thieves, but this one was unusual. He said he was moved by the plight of families in his locality and decided to use the stolen money to pay fees. Shivu claims to have spent around Rs 14 lakh on students' education; we are verifying his claims," an investigating officer told TOI.
What did the police recover?
Police managed to recover around 260 grams of gold stolen by the trio, a portion of which was traced to sales made in Tamil Nadu. However, another Rs 14 lakh, allegedly used by Shivu to fund education and buy vehicles, remains untraced.
Live Events
According to his statement, Shivu earned around Rs 22 lakh by selling the stolen gold. Apart from funding students, he claimed to have bought two autorickshaws — each costing Rs 4 lakh — for his two aides.
In another twist, Shivu told police he had once considered suicide due to the shame and burden of his
criminal lifestyle
. "But when I saw many students were struggling to pay fees, I found a new purpose. I decided to help them, even if it meant breaking the law," he allegedly said.
Police, however, are proceeding with caution. "We're not sure if he's telling the truth or trying to earn sympathy," said a senior officer. "Often, thieves come up with emotional narratives once they're caught. We will dig deeper to ascertain the facts. Regardless of his motive, a crime has been committed."

MDA reclaims encroached land in west Mysuru by demolishing illegal structures

Mysuru: Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) reclaimed its encroached property by demolishing a few structures and removing the occupants early on Monday. About eight and a half acres of land worth Rs 160 crore was taken into possession under police cover. MDA special land acquisition officer KR Rakshith, who is the in-charge commissioner of MDA, informed TOI that the property was situated in a prime location in west Mysuru and attached to the Outer Ring Road. Temporary structures constructed by encroachers were demolished using earthmovers. The structures were built with the intention to grab the property that was acquired by the urban body in the early 1990s. The illegal occupants left their aged relatives and parents to avoid any legal complications involving themselves. The MDA team, which sought police protection for the operation, successfully evacuated them by removing all their belongings from the temporary sheds and safely vacated them from the spot. Earthmovers were used to bring down the sheds. According to Rakshith, the total value of the market is about Rs 160 crore. About two families, all aged people, lived on the MDA land. MDA would clean up the area and fence it to avoid any further encroachment of the land in Vijayanagar IV stage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally An officer claimed the land, approximately 8 acres and 18 guntas, was acquired by the MDA (earlier Muda) in the early 1990s and award money was deposited in the court. "However, younger members of two families, claiming the land belonged to them, camped there for years," the officer said.

Miscreants rob house after tying up owners with rope

Kalaburagi: Thieves robbed a house in Shahabad town, Kalaburagi district, on Sunday night. The occupants of the house were present and thieves restrained their hands and feet. The house belonged to Hanamanth Pawar, a former council member of Shahabad municipal council and resident of Dhakka tanda. The burglars took valuables worth Rs 15 lakh, including Rs 7 lakh in cash. The incident occurred at 1.30am when Chandibai, Hanamanth Pawar's wife, stepped out for a nature call. Upon opening the main door, she encountered the thieves who were waiting. They rushed inside, brandishing swords and knives, threatening the family members - Hanamanth, Chandibai, their son Ramu, daughter-in-law Devibai, and daughter Manjula - before restraining them with rope. Intruders forcibly took an almirah key from Chandiabai, then stole cash from the almirah and chains from the women's necks, according to the FIR lodged by Hanamanth Pawar. The household members reported that the perpetrators concealed their faces with a cloth and communicated amongst themselves in Marathi and Hindi. Shahabad police have conducted an inspection of the premises and registered a case.

Mumbai court finds prima facie evidence of tender manipulation in Mithi River desilting scam

Mumbai: In its detailed rejection order, the sessions court stated that prima facie evidence indicates Prashant Tayshete, along with other BMC officers, played a role in manipulating the tender terms and conditions to ensure the use of two specific machines for the Mithi River desilting work. While the anticipatory bail plea of the deputy chief engineer of the stormwater drains department (operation & maintenance) was rejected on Saturday in the Rs 65 crore scam, the detailed order was made available on Monday. The judge further said that the terms and conditions were prepared in a manner to give an advantage to Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd at such a rate that caused wrongful loss to BMC. "It is an economic offence involving public money. Considering the nature of the offence, the post held by the applicant in the process of the project, and the wrongful loss of public money to the local body, the applicant is not entitled to the discretionary relief of anticipatory bail," Judge NG Shukla said. The judge, however, granted him interim protection from arrest for two weeks after he sought time to file an appeal in the Bombay High Court. Tayshete submitted that he was consistently employed within the solid waste management (SWM) department and held no responsibilities in the storm water drain (SWD) department. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo The judge, however, said this claim lacked documentary support. The judge further said that reports dated Nov 4 and 23, 2020, indicated his involvement or charge within the SWD department. The judge further noted that Tayshete, along with other BMC officers, visited Kerala and Delhi between Sept 25 and 28, 2020. While co-accused Prashant Ramagude, and he claimed to have paid for hotel bills in Kerala, flight tickets and hotel booking records indicate that these expenses were covered by Ketan Kadam, CEO of M/s Virgo Specialties Pvt Ltd, a company that subsequently leased machines to contractors at inflated rates. Crucially, at the time of this visit, the terms and conditions for using these specific machines in the desilting work had not yet been approved by higher BMC authorities. The fact that Ketan Kadam bore the expenses for the BMC officers' visit and stay prima facie suggested a "hand-in-glove" arrangement between the BMC officers and Ketan Kadam. This arrangement, the judge said, appeared to have been designed to insert specific terms and conditions for machine usage into the tenders, ensuring future benefits for Ketan Kadam and other contractors. "The criminal element of cheating lies here. It is unbelievable that the applicant, who was working as the officer of high rank, i.e., Executive Engineer, was not aware of who was bearing the expenses of their visits and stay at Delhi and Kerala," the judge said. The judge further observed that following the visit to Delhi and Kerala, three reports were submitted to incorporate specific terms and conditions into the tender for the use of specific machines, which were to be supplied by M/s Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd. *Meanwhile, on Monday, the court granted the anticipatory bail pleas of Deepak Mohan (56) and Kishore Menon (54) of Matprop Company, who were also named in the case. Calling the allegations concocted, their plea said that with over 30 machines deployed to government and private agencies, the company has proven its expertise and reliability. It said that given a strong track record, including projects like the Parvathy-Puthanar rejuvenation, the current case is unwarranted. Implicating the reputable applicants risks severe reputational damage, harassment, and hardship, which would harm the company's goodwill and disrupt ongoing national projects, the plea said.
