E-hailing scare in Alexandra triggers missing girl alert

E-hailing scare in Alexandra triggers missing girl alert

The Citizen3 days ago

Concern grew for Mbali Ncaku after she sent a worrying message to her friend on June 18 about an e-hailing ride she requested from Bramley to Pretoria, and then became unreachable.
This prompted social posts suggesting that she was missing. However, she has clarified the matter, noting that she realised later that she was panicking when she sent the message. In the message, she told her friend to call the police if she did not make it to Tshwane University of Technology Soshanguve South campus in about an hour and thirty minutes. But the friend called Ncaku's mother right away.

'I got scared when he asked me to cancel the ride, and when he said he was taking a different route because he was trying to avoid the police, I panicked. I think my friend also panicked, that is why she called my mother immediately. But I got to the campus safe and on time for her exam,' she explained, adding that now when she thinks about it, she was not in danger and it was just a misunderstanding.
Tumisho Sekhukhune, the e-hailing driver, acknowledged that the incident was unfortunate. 'My mistake was asking her to cancel the ride. We were just having a casual conversation, maybe that is why I did not realise she was scared or anything. She told me her exam was about an hour and thirty minutes long. I even asked if she was going to come back to Bramley because I would have waited to give her a ride back.'

Sekhukhune said he did not take a different direction because he was trying to avoid the police, he was only using an alternative route displayed on his GPS.
Asked why he told Ncaku to cancel the ride, he explained that he did not force her, he was just asking because he was trying to avoid their e-hailing platform from taking a portion of the trip fare.
'I am not the only person who cancels the trips. Drivers know that prices on our e-hailing platform are more beneficial to the customers than drivers. For instance, it would charge a customer R80 for a long drive and still deduct a certain amount from that R80, it affects us,' he exclaimed.

Surviving to thriving: SPCA shares heartwarming update on Bobby

The SPCA has shared a heartwarming update on Bobby, a dog rescued after it was spotted in a viral TikTok video earlier this month. Images of the emaciated dog – who had been forced to eat plastic to survive – left many South Africans enraged and calling for action. Johannesburg content creator Sasha Tshiamo and the dog's owners are now facing charges of animal cruelty. Earlier this month, a TikTok video featuring Sasha Tshiamo dancing was posted on the X platform. The video quickly went viral because of an emaciated dog in the background. The animal's ribcage was clearly visible, and it appeared lethargic. Following a nationwide call, the SPCA stepped in, removing the dog – affectionately nicknamed 'Bobby' – from her shocking living conditions. The animal activists revealed that both the dog's owner – who willingly surrendered the animal – and the influencer were now facing animal cruelty charges. In a social media post, the SPCA shared an update about Bobby, who appeared to be thriving under their care. In a video clip, brave Bobby is seen wearing a winter jersey as she frolics in a garden and happily poses for pictures. The heartwarming caption read: 'One sad video, one brave dog, one second chance. 'Bobby's story didn't end in the background – it's only just begun! From a shadow of herself to a brave and beautiful girl. It turns out that all Bobby needed was a little love and some treats.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by NSPCA (@ According to the SPCA, Bobby will soon be up for adoption. The SPCA has repeatedly warned the public that animal abusers can be criminally charged under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. The act – which was established to prevent the cruelty of animals – stipulates that those found guilty can face a fine or imprisonment. The SPCA rescued a starving dog that captured the hearts of South Africans. Content creator Sasha Tshiamo is now facing animal cruelty charges over the viral video. Aserie Ndlovu murder case postponed as fifth suspect joins

The murder case was postponed after the newly-arrested fifth suspect opted to appoint a private lawyer. Pretoria-based journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdluli were reported missing since February 2025. Picture: Facebook/Sbusiso Aserie Ndlovu The case of the five men charged in connection with the disappearance and murder of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdluli, has been postponed to 4 July. The case was postponed to allow the fifth suspect, Thabang Isaac Hlophe, to secure legal representation after joining the other four. Father Samuel Mogowe, Lucky Sikhosana, David Madisha, and Sello Skhalo Uoane previously abandoned their bail applications. Court appearance for formal joinder The five accused, who appeared in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, are facing two counts of kidnapping and murder each. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said Friday's court appearance was for the formal joinder of Hlophe to the matter and a possible bail application on his behalf. 'However, the application did not proceed as Hlophe opted to appoint a private attorney to represent him,' Nyuswa said. All suspects have been remanded in custody. 'The [NPA] condemns acts of violent crime and remains resolute in pursuing justice for victims,' Nyuswa said. The accused were arrested on different occasions during a police intelligence-driven operation. The first suspect arrested was the last to be in the company of the missing couple. 'The second, third and fourth suspects that have been arrested were found with different vehicle parts believed to be those of the missing journalist,' police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said shortly after the arrests. 'One of those arrested is said to be a mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs that were found in possession of the suspects have been seized,' Mathe added. Remains and DNA confirmation Skeletal remains with gunshot wounds, believed to be of the missing couple, were discovered in Rust de Winter along the Limpopo-Gauteng border in May after the suspects identified the location. Earlier this month, police confirmed that DNA analysis positively linked the remains to Ndlovu and Mdluli. 'The human remains were analysed and matched with the reference sample of the biological relatives of the deceased. A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are those of the missing couple,' Mathe said at the time.
