Mets defeat Rockies 4-2 on Francisco Lindor's pinch-hit double in 9th

CBS News07-06-2025

Francisco Lindor had a soothing remedy for his broken right pinky toe — a go-ahead hit in the New York Mets' 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
Questionable before the game, the Mets shortstop entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and delivered a two-run double that put New York ahead for good in Denver.
Lindor delivers big hit in Mets win in Colorado
Lindor sent a cutter from reliever Zach Agnos (0-2) into right field to score Juan Soto and a sliding Pete Alonso. It was Lindor's first go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI of his career, according to the postgame notes.
Alonso used a nifty slide on the play to avoid the tag and give the Mets a 4-2 lead. He also added a two-run double in the seventh on a night the Mets were 2 of 15 with runners in scoring position.
Ryne Stanek (2-4) pitched out of a no-out, bases loaded jam in the eighth courtesy of an unassisted double play by Brett Baty at third and a strikeout.
Edwin Díaz turned in a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

Mickey Moniak had an RBI single in the seventh and a solo homer off Mets starter Kodai Senga in the third.
The Rockies saw their three-game winning streak halted after sweeping the Marlins in Miami. Shortstop Ryan Ritter lined a triple in his major league debut.
Antonio Senzatela has scuffled to get loose at times in the first this season. So the Rockies employed a new strategy — they had Ryan Rolison open the game. Senzatela took the mound in the second. He pitched four scoreless innings despite surrendering three hits and four walks.
Ronny Mauricio, who filled in for Lindor at shortstop, had a double in eighth, his first hit since being called up Tuesday.
Lindor playing with broken pinky toe
Lindor was questionable to play at all this weekend after his right pinky toe was broken by a pitch in the first inning on Wednesday.
"Once it comes to those moments, I'm just there to make something happen," Lindor explained. "Just get a good pitch, and whatever happens, happens. Don't let the moment get too big."
He tuned out any pain from his toe once he stepped into the batter's box.
"Something is not 100% for sure. But I'm not the only one," Lindor said. "I would say most of the guys are not 100%. So there's no excuses."
Lindor said manager Carlos Mendoza asked him around the fourth or fifth inning if he might be available to hit. His response was simple.
"I said, 'Yeah,'" Lindor recounted.

Lindor's availability — pain and all — comes as no surprise to Alonso.
"That's really special, having a teammate willing to put his body on the line every single day like that," said Alonso, who had a big game with his bat (a two-run double), his arm (he threw out a runner at home in the fifth) and his sliding ability (he avoided a tag at home on Lindor's double). "That's a true pro, in my opinion, and he embodies that."
Lindor's pinky toe was broken by a pitch from Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin in the first inning on Wednesday. He sat out Thursday and recovered enough to pinch-hit Friday.
He may even be in the lineup on Saturday.
"I would like to start," Lindor said. "It's going to be up to the trainers and (Mendoza) and we are going to make a decision together. ... Hopefully tomorrow I'll wake up in a good spot."
Lindor is hitting .282 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs this season. He finished runner-up to Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani in the NL MVP race last season.
Manaea makes rehab start
In Wilmington, Delaware, Mets lefty Sean Manaea made a rehab start for High-A Brooklyn against the Blue Rocks. He threw 36 pitches — 26 strikes — over 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Manaea, who has been sidelined all season by an oblique injury, struck out two and didn't walk a batter.
The 33-year-old Manaea re-signed as a free agent with the Mets for $75 million over three years. He went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts last season.

Buss Family to See Astonishing Profit After Record-Setting Sale of Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers set yet another record on Wednesday, June 18, in what's become a lengthy line of making a variety of notable sports history, with the Buss family somewhat stunningly selling the storied franchise that the late Dr. Jerry Buss originally purchased for $67.5 million in 1979. Now, 46 years later after what proved to be a franchise-altering moment that saw the Lakers go on numerous NBA Championship runs, hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy a whopping 11 times under Buss ownership, the legendary family is about to see a patently ridiculous profit after selling the team to Mark Walter, the current owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Advertisement With ESPN's Shams Charania dropping the news bomb late Wednesday afternoon, the Buss family sold its 66 percent majority stake in the Lakers for "a valuation of approximately $10 billion," Just as Charania did in his followup post on X, it certainly feels like a number worth repeating: Ten. Billion. And as Sportsnaut quite specifically noted, this record-setting Lakers sale "represents a staggering return on investment for the [Buss] family at 14,714.81%." Considering the Buss family will also maintain a minority share of the team at "just over 15% for a period of time," in addition to Jeanie Buss reportedly staying on as Lakers' governor—a role she's held since ownership was kept in the family following Jerry's passing in 2013—that is one hell of a win and a payday all while the 63-year-old will still hold a significant influence on the direction of the franchise. Advertisement If that $10 billion valuation number hasn't resonated just yet, keep in mind that the Boston Celtics, an equally iconic and deeply treasured NBA franchise, sold earlier this year for "only" $6.1 billion. It's also worth noting that Walter, the new majority owner of the Lakers, had already purchased a 26 percent stake of the team back in 2021 and held first right of refusal if the Buss family were to ever sell its majority stake in the franchise. On Wednesday afternoon, the man who's proven to be a fearless owner when it comes to spending and securing top MLB free-agents ever since taking a majority stake in the Dodgers in 2012, finished off the deal with the Lakers that began four years ago. It would be sincerely shocking if Walter and his ownership group didn't set out to do with the Lakers exactly what they've aggressively done with the Dodgers, which should serve as exceptionally great news for fans of the purple and gold. Dawn Staley Says Caitlin Clark's Most 'Dangerous' Weapon is Making Others Better

Head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team, Dawn Staley, has led her squad to three NCAA championships over their last nine seasons, reaching the championship game a total of five times during that span. Staley is also someone who saw great success on the court in her own right during her playing days at the University of Virginia, impressively leading her team to the Final Four three times during her four years in college. Advertisement So, in short, when the 55-year-old Staley chimes in with an opinion on women's hoops, or basketball in general, it makes plenty of sense to listen. On Wednesday, Staley made an appearance on Kylie Kelce's popular Not Gonna Lie podcast, and the two ended up talking about WNBA star Caitlin Clark, who's been an especially hot name this week. Surprisingly, Staley explained in detail why she believes Clark's well-documented three-point shooting ability with seemingly endless range, is actually not what she deems to be the Indiana Fever star's most valuable and, as she put it, "most dangerous" skill on the court. Advertisement "She [Clark] can beat you in a variety of ways. She can beat you obviously with her three-point shot," Staley said. "But for me, the most dangerous thing of Caitlin Clark is her passing ability. Her ability to make other people better. Her ability to have other people's production go up along with her production." Staley went on to explain why, when she coached against Clark in the NCAA tournament on two different occasions, giving up points wasn't nearly as big of a concern as it was had Iowa's famous No. 22 filled up the stat sheet in other ways. "That was our emphasis when we won, when beat them [Iowa]...We said Caitlin Clark's gonna get 30 [points]. But she can't have 12 assists. Because if she's got 12 assists, then she's involving her teammates in a way that doesn't quite add up. We can't produce enough points like they can." Staley also explained to Kelce during her appearance that Clark is "quite incredible" and "quite an anomaly," and credited her for bringing so many eyeballs to the WNBA, particularly all the "new eyeballs." Advertisement The accomplished Staley expressed that, while she had only coached against Clark twice, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year has probably been "the most difficult player to scout" due to the variety of ways in which she can beat a team with her innate ability to get other teammates involved, while also housing the ability to be a highly-prolific scorer.
