Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 Sets Record At Nurburgring

Volkswagen has introduced a new model in its production lineup with the Golf GTI Edition 50, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic hot hatch badge. The near-production version, driven by Volkswagen test and race driver Benny Leuchter, completed a lap of the full 20.8 km Nurburgring Nordschleife in an impressive 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds. On a slightly shorter 20.6 km layout, excluding the T13 grandstand run-off, the car recorded an even faster time of 7 minutes and 41.27 seconds.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 is now the fastest road-legal Volkswagen around the Nurburgring, although it still falls short of the ID.R, a 680-horsepower track-only electric prototype that recorded a lap time of 6 minutes and 5.336 seconds in 2019, which remains the all-time record for the German carmaker at the circuit.
Golf GTI Edition 50: Powertrain
The Golf GTI Edition 50 is powered by a 2.0-litre EA888 turbo-petrol engine, tuned to deliver 324 hp, which is about 60 hp more than the standard GTI. The engine is mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The test vehicle was equipped with Volkswagen's optional Performance Package, featuring lightweight 19-inch forged wheels, Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyre, and revised suspension and chassis settings, an upgrade that Leuchter described as "the decisive factor" in the car's Nurburgring performance.

Volkswagen has announced that the Golf GTI Edition 50 will officially debut on June 20, 2025, just before the Nurburgring 24-hour race. While the full specifications have yet to be released, global deliveries are expected to begin in 2026. As a limited-run, anniversary model, it is unlikely to be available in markets like India.

Volkswagen 's premium brand Audi could build a plant at a new location in the United States under scenarios being considered to placate President Donald Trump in the tariff conflict, the Spiegel news magazine reported on Friday. Audi is considering building a plant in the southern US, which would be the more expensive option out of a number of scenarios being considered, with company sources estimating costs of up to 4 billion euros ($4.6 billion), the report said. Audi has no production of its own in the US, but Volkswagen has a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee and one under construction near Columbia, South Carolina. Trump's announcement of sweeping tariffs has already racked up hundreds of millions of euros in costs for German carmakers heavily reliant on their export business, according to an industry representative. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are in talks with Washington over a possible import tariff deal, seeking to use their US investments and exports as leverage to soften any blow, sources have told Reuters.

Mercedes-Benz Issues Recall Over Fire Risk In India- Is Your Luxury Car Affected?

Mercedes-Benz India has issued a recall for multiple models in the country over a potential fire risk. Specifically, the latest recall from the German brand covers models like EQS sedan, GLC, AMG SL 55, and S-Class. The update on the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) confirms that a total of 30 units have been affected. With this one on the list, the brand now has a total of six voluntary recalls so far this year. Based on the announcement by the brand, a total of 16 EQS sedans are affected by this issue, in addition to nine S-Class models, three GLC vehicles, and two AMG SLs. To address the problem, Mercedes-Benz is expected to contact the owners of the affected vehicles to schedule an appointment and rectify the problem at no cost. All of the affected units of the aforementioned models were manufactured between 22 July 2023 and 20 March 2024. The recall note from the brand read, "It has been identified that the fuse boxes might not have been reworked correctly. As a result, systems connected to the fuse might fail, and the vehicle might lose its propulsion without prior warning, and the restraint functions or the instrument cluster might also be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash and injuries. Under such specific circumstances, a potential risk of a thermal incident in the vehicle cannot be excluded." Before this, the brand had issued a recall in March to address a similar fire risk. Meanwhile, other recalls were addressing a software glitch and an issue with the front passenger airbag. Along with it, there was another recall in January 2025 addressing models like GLC, AMG GT, S-Class, G-Class, and AMG E Class pertaining to a fuel delivery module.
