Rejected Trump's invite to come to land of Jagannath: PM Modi in Odisha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he declined an invitation from former United States President Donald Trump in favour of visiting the eastern Indian state of Odisha, which he described as the land of Lord Jagannath.
"Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 summit, and the US President Trump called me. He said, since you have come to Canada, go via Washington, we will have dinner together and talk. He extended the invitation with great insistence. I told the US President, thank you for the invitation. It is very important for me to go to the land of Mahaprabhu, and hence I politely declined his invitation and your love and devotion to Mahaprabhu brought me to this land," PM Modi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
The Prime Minister's remarks came during his public address in Bhubaneswar, where he is on a visit ahead of upcoming religious and cultural observances related to the Jagannath Yatra.
105 development projects announced
PM Modi also launched 105 development projects worth over ₹18,600 crore during his visit to Odisha. The projects span key sectors such as drinking water, irrigation, healthcare, rural connectivity, highways, and railway infrastructure.
At an event held at Janata Maidan, the Prime Minister flagged off several railway services, including the first passenger train to Boudh district following the inauguration of the Sonepur–Purunakatak railway line. Additional rail developments included the launch of the third and fourth lines between Sarla and Sason, and a fourth line between Jharsuguda and Jamga.
Modi also flagged off 100 electric buses under the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) system.
The Prime Minister unveiled the 'Odisha Vision Document', a long-term roadmap for the state's development. Prepared with public input, the document sets out economic goals tied to the centenary of Odisha's formation in 2036 and India's 100th year of independence in 2047. It outlines plans to grow the state's economy to $500 billion by 2036 and $1.5 trillion by 2047.
During the event, he also felicitated several women achievers, including participants of the 'Lakhpati Didi' initiative. The programme, under the Ministry of Rural Development, supports women in self-help groups (SHGs) to earn a household income above ₹1 lakh annually through sustainable livelihoods.

For the first time, Indian hockey players selected for the men's and women's national camps will receive a Rs 25,000 monthly out-of-pocket allowance, a decision sanctioned by the sports ministry after consistent requests from the sport's governing body. Eighty players (40 men and 40 women) are set to benefit from this allowance, which is extended to athletes in the developmental group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. The decision was made during the Mission Olympic Cell's monthly meeting on Thursday. This allowance will cost the government Rs 20 lakh per month, while core group athletes receive Rs 50,000 per month. 'The allowance was being requested by Hockey India for some time, and we have decided to accept the demand. The players have performed reasonably well, and it is on merit," Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed reporters in an informal interaction. Hockey India will need to submit a list of players every month to facilitate the disbursement of funds. 'The list will consider form and fitness, and names might change depending on these factors," a sports ministry source explained. Currently, hockey players earn salaries from their respective departments and organisations, although a proposal for a graded contract system by Hockey India has been under consideration for the past few years. Their additional source of income comes from prize money for strong international performances in events like the Olympics and the Asian Games. The men's team has secured two consecutive bronze medals in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the subsequent Paris Games last year. The women's team finished fourth in Tokyo but did not qualify for the Paris event. Both teams are currently competing in the FIH Pro League's European leg, where the results have not been particularly encouraging so far. The MOC also approved financial proposals amounting to Rs 4.28 crore during the meeting. A significant portion of the funds — Rs 1.38 crore — will be allocated to tennis players such as Saketh Myneni, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, and three women players. 'Several proposals for assistance from para-athletes were also approved. Additionally, a few additions were made to the TOPS developmental group. The core group remains unchanged for now," a Sports Authority of India (SAI) official stated. The ministry has also decided to enhance its talent identification process with an app that will allow talented youngsters to upload their performances for evaluation by regional talent identification panels of the SAI. 'If found promising at first glance, the youngster will be invited to Khelo India Regional Centres where their potential will be assessed. This will broaden our talent identification mechanism, which is currently limited to age group competitions," Mandaviya said. 'It will ensure that we can reach the remotest corners of the country to find promising athletes. This is all part of the National Sports Repository System," he added. With PTI inputs.

Bhubaneswar, June 20 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the country has increasingly 'experienced the BJP's development model", pointing to the recent trajectories of Assam, Tripura and, most recently, Odisha. Addressing a rally marking the first anniversary of Odisha's BJP government, the Prime Minister contrasted the 'previous regime's model of governance—marked by delay, obstruction, derailment and corruption' with what he called a decade of 'good governance that makes people's lives easier". Highlighting the Eastern India as a case study, Modi said a decade ago Assam was mired in instability, separatism and violence. "Today the guns have fallen silent and Assam is out‑pacing many other states on several parameters,' he said. In Tripura ,the Prime Minister said after decades of Left rule, Tripura 'lagged on every development indicator,' from crumbling infrastructure to unresponsive administration. Now, Modi argued, it has become 'a symbol of peace and progress.' Coming to Odisha , he said, it had long wrestled with widespread corruption, red‑tapism and poor infrastructure, leaving many regions behind. 'Over the past year we have worked with full resolve to change that reality,' he declared. Modi credited the union‑and‑state 'double engine' approach for a spate of projects worth 'thousands of crores' inaugurated on Friday. This model, he said, is delivering twin benefits: He said lakhs of poor families in Odisha previously excluded from Ayushman Bharat now receive coverage under both the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana and Odisha's Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana. Nearly three crore Odias are eligible for cash‑free treatment—inside and outside the state—and more than two lakh patients have already availed themselves of the scheme in hospitals across a dozen states. Under Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana, over 23 lakh senior citizens (70+) in Odisha can claim up to Rs.5 lakh in free medical care, significantly easing household health costs. Modi said the farmers in Odisha now receive combined assistance under PM‑KISAN and the state's complementary schemes. The higher paddy procurement prices, promised last year, have already benefited lakhs of cultivators, Modi said. The Prime Minister lamented that tribal communities had been kept 'in poverty and deprivation for decades' and 'used for political gain' by earlier governments, which in turn fueled Naxalism.
