Dubai, UAE, May, 2025: The doors opened on the 11th Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East conference and exhibition today (6th May 2025) and was officially inaugurated by H.E. Eng. Hessa Al Malek, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure; Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC; Andrew Williams, President, Seatrade Maritime, part of Informa Markets, and senior representatives of the maritime community
In a video address to a packed Main Stage, H.E Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy & Infrastructure, Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure said: 'We aim to position UAE Maritime Week among the world's top maritime events, with all stakeholders' engagement in shaping the future of this industry. The UAE continues to rise as a global logistic hub, guided by visionary leadership and bold strategies.
'In the UAE, we continue to improve the ports' handling capacity, which today handles over 21 million TEUs. The maritime sector contributes nearly 136 billion dirhams, or $37 billion to our GDP, with a target to increase it to 200 billion dirhams, or more than $54 billion in the near future.'
Speaking to 2050 net-zero targets, His Excellency added: 'In our view, the world needs to be aligned when it comes to net-zero targets by 2050, and for us in the UAE, we will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the UAE Net-Zero target by 2050.'
The strategic partner of Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East, DP World GCC delivered a hard-hitting keynote to the room from Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director, DP World GCC, who said: 'Resilience, Partnership, Innovation and Sustainability define the future of maritime logistics and that's where the Gulf – and our region more broadly – has a real opportunity to lead.
'Let me start with resilience. More and more global operators are turning to the Gulf for stability. In a sector facing uncertainty, our region has proven to be an anchor point of stability, certainty and security. This is no accident. It's the result of years of coordinated investment in maritime infrastructure. The Middle East has multimodal marine networks that connect over 150 ports worldwide. From the $800 million expansion of the South Container Terminal in Jeddah to advanced automation at Jebel Ali, we are building smart, resilient maritime networks that can adapt to demand.
'The second priority is partnership. The Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk is one example of how strategic partnerships can keep global trade moving. Together with our shipping line customers, we're coordinating vessel schedules, improving berth planning and enhancing operational efficiencies to ensure reliability. When shippers face instability, this kind of reliability is a necessity. And to scale this reliability, we need collaboration across the entire port network and the entire maritime value chain.
'The third need is innovation. Our industry has always been seen as slow and resistant to change – but I believe this stereotype is changing fast. In the past year, I have seen digitalisation and automation projects jump forward. From AI tools that help choose the best routes and save fuel, to digital twins and predictive analytics, innovation is front and centre. Today, platforms like CARGOES Flow have made our region a leader in anticipating disruption before it happens. This level of automation supports how our ports work together as part of a coordinated system. From gates to cranes to yard equipment, this technology is reducing human error, speeding up operations, and improving vessel call performance. Even upstream, we're seeing the positive impact this can have.
'Which brings me to my final point: sustainability. Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global emissions. And we can't stand still – even if the odds seem against us. Regulatory frameworks are already shaping how vessels operate and where they berth. We have no choice but to decarbonise – and fast. The good news is that the Gulf is ahead of the curve, because we're using maritime infrastructure to keep change within reach. Port equipment has been electrified across terminals. Investments are being made in shore power so all vessels can plug in at berth – reducing emissions, noise, and fuel burn. And with the UAE now home to the world's first carbon removal deal for a port operator, we're setting the bar for what comes next.
He ended with a resounding call to action: 'The global trade landscape is changing. Today the waters are rough, and trade maps are being redrawn. But I am confident that we can navigate it successfully. Let's move together. Let's move smarter. And above all – let's keep trade moving.'
The UAE Maritime Week is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure with Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East held as the focal exhibition and conference of the week-long activities.
More than 7,000 maritime and shipping attendees will converge on Dubai during this period and a record 150+ speakers will share their knowledge at a packed – and free to attend – conference agenda at Dubai World Trade Centre from 6-8 May as part of Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East.

In a bold move to solidify bilateral ties, Russia has proposed supplying Mexico with liquefied natural gas (LNG) and offering advanced oil extraction technologies to boost the country's energy capabilities. The Russian Ministry of Energy's recent announcement emphasized the country's readiness to support Mexico in overcoming the energy challenges it faces. Russia's Energy Minister, Sergey Tsivilev, stated, 'We are already working with Mexico, and we are prepared to share our advanced LNG technologies, along with supplying gas to support their energy needs.' The proposal underscores Russia's desire to be a key player in Latin America's energy future, positioning itself as a reliable partner for Mexico's growing energy demands. This offer is particularly timely, as Mexico's oil and gas sectors are under pressure from aging infrastructure, declining production rates, and the ongoing need for substantial investment. The Mexican government, seeking to boost its domestic oil output, has struggled to meet its production targets, with state-owned oil company Pemex falling short of the national goal of 1.8 million barrels per day. In addition to LNG, Russia's offer includes the transfer of sophisticated oil extraction technologies tailored to challenging geological conditions. These technologies could be pivotal in addressing some of the systemic issues faced by Pemex, including the need for efficient and sustainable oil recovery methods. Currently, Pemex operates over 30,000 wells, a significant portion of which remain dormant or underperforming due to funding limitations and outdated infrastructure. Despite efforts to rejuvenate dormant wells and enhance output from existing fields, the pace of recovery has been slow. The Russian offer represents a critical opportunity for Mexico to access the technical expertise necessary to increase oil production, improve field recovery rates, and ensure that its energy infrastructure remains competitive. Mexico's reliance on U.S. natural gas imports further complicates its energy security. With 72% of its gas needs met through imports, primarily via pipelines from the United States, Mexico remains highly vulnerable to fluctuations in the geopolitical climate and any disruptions to the supply chain. This dependence has become particularly concerning in light of past political tensions and the potential for future supply interruptions. The 2021 winter storm in Texas, which led to widespread energy disruptions in Mexico, highlighted the precariousness of this dependency. The gas shortages that resulted from the storm caused massive economic losses and widespread power outages, shaking the confidence in Mexico's reliance on U.S. imports. In response, Mexican officials have been accelerating plans to enhance the country's strategic gas storage capacity. The goal is to double storage capabilities by 2025-2026, in order to better insulate the country from any future energy crises. Russia's offer to supply LNG and share expertise in oil extraction presents an opportunity for Mexico to reduce its dependence on U.S. energy imports and diversify its energy sources. By tapping into Russian LNG, Mexico could ensure more stability in its energy supply while gradually shifting away from reliance on U.S. natural gas. This partnership could also provide Mexico with the tools it needs to modernize and expand its oil production, using Russian technologies to unlock reserves that have long been stagnant. Egypt builds solar plant in Djibouti

The foundation stone for an Egyptian-funded solar power plant project in the village of Omar Kajaa in the Arta region of Djibouti has been laid during a recent event. The project is carried out in cooperation between the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Djiboutian Ministry of Energy, with funding from the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, and execution by the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation. The project comes in the wake of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's visit to Djibouti last April, under the scope of Egypt's development projects in Africa. The ceremony was attended by Younes Ali Guedi, Djiboutian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources; Major General Mohamed Osama Issa, Deputy to the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Director of the Central Administration at the Ministry; officials from the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation; and the Governor of the Arta region. The solar power plant in the village of Omar Kajaa is the first fruit of the cooperation between Egypt and Djibouti in the energy field. In this regard, the Egyptian Embassy in Djibouti had recently organised a three-day-visit to Djibouti for a delegation from the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and a number of relevant companies to Djibouti. During the visit, cooperation between the two countries in the fields of electricity and energy was stressed. The Egyptian delegation held fruitful discussions with the Djiboutian side regarding other projects between the two sides to develop the electricity grid in Djibouti and expand the wind power plant in the Al-Jubit region. The consortium successfully completed with a total value of SAR 825 million The Rabigh 2 Solar Independent Power Plant (IPP) has successfully reached financial close on May 15, 2025, under Round 5 projects of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which is led and supervised by the Ministry of Energy. The project is being developed by a consortium comprising Aljomaih Energy & Water Company as the lead developer and TotalEnergies Renewables SAS as the consortium partner, underscoring the strong collaboration between leading local and international energy companies. Located in Rabigh, Makkah Province, the Rabigh 2 Solar IPP is implemented under a Build, Own, Operate (BOO) model and will boast a generation capacity of 300 MW. The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) will purchase the electricity generated over 25 years. The project is financed with a total value of SAR 825 million, supported by a consortium of lenders including Al Rajhi Bank, ADCB, SMTB, and DBS Bank (Hong Kong). Once operational, Rabigh 2 will be capable of powering approximately 53,000 residential units. In this context, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed Al Abdulaziz Aljomaih, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, stated: 'Rabigh 2 Solar IPP reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting the Saudis' ambitious Vision 2030, the National Renewable Energy Program and the Saudi Green Initiative. At Aljomaih Energy and Water, we are proud to collaborate closely with relevant government entities to advance Saudi Arabia's clean energy transition. This achievement is considered a national contribution that supports the Kingdom's leadership in sustainable development.' Eng. Adnan Abdulhadi Buhuligah, Deputy CEO of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company added: 'Reaching financial close on Rabigh 2 is the result of seamless collaboration with our partners, including TotalEnergies, government stakeholders, and our financing institutions. This project exemplifies Aljomaih Energy and Water Company's capability to lead and deliver complex, utility-scale renewable projects with high technological efficiency. It is a model of international partnerships driving forward the Kingdom's renewable energy future.' This project represents a new addition to Aljomaih Energy and Water Company's renewable energy portfolio, as it is located adjacent to the existing South Rabigh Project, which is currently operational and generating 300 MW. The financial close of Rabigh 2 marks a pivotal milestone in the company's journey toward renewable energy transformation. It also reflects the confidence of both local and international developers in the Kingdom's investment environment and the National Renewable Energy Program, led and supervised by the Ministry of Energy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix to approximately 50% by 2030.
