STV News2 days ago

The Premiership fixture list for the 2025/26 season has been released, with top flight clubs learning who they will face on opening day and in the weeks to come.
Derby dates have been confirmed and fans are able to draw up their plans as the schedule up until the split has been finalised.
League champions Celtic begin their season with a home match against St Mirren on August 3, when the champions flag will be raised.
Rangers will play their first league match under new ownership, and under Russell Martin's management, away at Motherwell at 5.30pm on August 2. Kilmarnock play Livingston in the first Premiership game fo the season at 3pm that day.
Newly promoted Falkirk start with a home game, taking on Dundee United on opening day, while Dundee are at home to Hibernian the following day.
Derek McInnes' first Premiership match at Hearts manager is on Monday, August 4, when the Tynecastle side host Aberdeen.
SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: 'The publication of the fixture list is a big day in the calendar for clubs and fans alike and 2025/26 promises to be yet another exciting and dramatic season across all four divisions of the SPFL.
'Season 2024/25 saw record attendances for the third year in a row, with more than 5.3 million supporters attending matches across all our competitions, again highlighting the massive interest in football in this country.
'This coming season will also see more matches shown live on TV than ever before and I would like to thank our title sponsor William Hill and our broadcast partners Sky Sports, Premier Sports, BBC Scotland and BBC ALBA for showcasing the very best of the SPFL. I wish all 42 clubs well for the season ahead and hope that the supporters enjoy their football in the coming months.'
The first Old Firm derby of the season takes place at Ibrox on August 31, with Celtic hosting their rivals on January 3. The teams meet for a third time at Ibrox on February 28.
Hibs host Hearts in the first Edinburgh derby of the season on October 4, with the teams meeting again at Easter Road on December 27. The third clash between the teams will be at Tynecastle on February 11.
Dundee United take on their city rivals at Dens Park on August 20. The teams then meet at Tannadice on January 3 and again at Dens on March 14.
The full fixture list can be found on the SPFL website.
There is no winter break in the Premiership again, with the expanded European competitions leaving no room in the calendar.
However, for the first time Scotland's European representatives: Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibernian and Dundee United, will be able to postpone a league match.
If they reach the play-off round of a UEFA competition, they will be permitted to postpone their matchday three Premiership fixture on the weekend of August 23.

Celtic break nine year transfer rule for Benjamin Nygren as signing mega bargain changes everything

The Parkhead side are closing in on the signing of the Swedish forward The very nature of Celtic's globe-trotting transfer approach means that no stone is left unturned in the quest for transfer gems. Uncovering signing diamonds leads to far-flung scouting missions with multiple signings made in Asia, Australia and some of the less fashionable outposts of European football. ‌ Celtic's high and low approach would take them to Timbuktu if they felt it would be value for money. ‌ But one league which had been off the menu for over nine years was the Danish now. Last season's double winners are putting the finishing touches to a £1.7 million deal for winger Benjamin Nygren from Nordsjaelland. And he will be the first signing from the Danish Superliga since Erik Sviatchenko arrived from FC Midtjylland in January 2016. Celtic have signed a Dane since Sviatchenko, of course, in the form gems Matt O'Riley and Kasper Schemichel plus the lesser-spotted misfit loanee Oliver Abildgaard who was a rare misstep during the Ange Postecoglou era. But Nygren represents the first direct signing from the Danish Superliga since Sviatchenko nine years ago, the defender spending a two-and-a-half years at the club before returning to FC Midtjylland. ‌ And prior to that it was Morten Rasmussen who was signed from Brondby six years earlier under Tony Mowbray but, like the manager who signed him, it was an underwhelming spell in Glasgow. In fact, at £1.5m the striker cost £500,000 per goal before he too returned to Denmark, ironically joining Sviatchenko at FC Midtjylland where they were team-mates. Given the fact Sviatchenko wasn't a huge hit at Parkhead, it could be that Celtic have been wary to dip into the Danish league. ‌ But they have clearly still kept their eye on it with Mathias Kvistgaarden earning many an admiring glance from Celtic and others but it's an alternative option with positional versatility who is destined for Parkhead. And Nygren, certainly on evidence and the view of experts, looks the real deal and could prove a shrewd acquisition for Brendan Rodgers. England star pays tribute to Young Lions after Euro U21 clash ends in chaos

England Under-21s defence of their European title continued with a 3-1 quarter-final win over pre-tournament favourites Spain, to book a final four showdown with Netherlands Harvey Elliott paid tribute to England's fighting spirit after reaching the semi-finals of the U21 European Championships. There were fiery scenes at the full-time whistle as players from both sets of teams came head-to-head after England ran out 3-1 winners to book a tie with the Netherlands in the final four. ‌ The Liverpool attacker, who netted the second for the Young Lions, said of his side's performance: "Incredible, I'm lost for words I think. I said at the start of the game it's going to be very tough, I knew they'd play an incredible game against us. ‌ "I thought the lads handled it and handled the pressure, we conceded a goal and were determined to keep on going and keep on fighting. We deserve it so much. It's kind of time to celebrate it but we need to think about the semis now and go again." It boiled over Trnava, Slovakia as Spain's anger didn't mix well with England's celebrations. Coaches from both teams had to split the players up, with the match officials also getting involved. Spain's Rafa Marin was sent off following the full-time whistle, while England goalscorer James McAtee picked up a booking. But Elliott has revealed he tried to diffuse the situation in fear England were at risk of getting players sent off and suspended for their semi-final against Holland. He added: "I don't know [what caused it], it's always going to happen due to the passion of both teams. I was trying to calm everyone down, we have everything to lose and they don't but we have to focus now and not get too carried away. "We can't lose players for the semi-final." ‌ Elliott also noted the vast improvement from England as they scored three goals to eliminate the tournament favourites. He continued: "There was a major difference from start to finish. We were compact as a team and fought together, we didn't give up and we trusted in our own ability. ‌ "The football was just incredible, we need to take a lot of things from this game. We have to take it game by game, we can't be thinking too far ahead. "We need to recover as it's going to be another tough game. Who knows if we can defend it." Young Lions boss Carsley said of his defending champions: "The big thing is this can't be our final, this can't be the highlight of our tournament. There are better nights to come and it's good now we've got an extra day recovery so I'm looking forward to the next game now. "We talked about making a fast start and we obviously gave away a penalty inside the opening two minutes but the lads showed a lot of character, I thought we were so good in the first half."There were some really outstanding performances and they should be proud of themselves." The rule Dungannon Swifts and Larne have fallen foul of that UEFA must do something about

When the UEFA Conference League was introduced in 2021, it was billed as a competition for teams from smaller Leagues to live the European dream. Essentially the bottom half of the Europa League, both tournaments share the same anthem and there are intentional similarities in their branding. As devotees of UEFA's association rankings list will attest, domestic Leagues can effectively be promoted and relegated between the two.
