No restrictions on Indian travellers to Saudi Arabia; temporary visa curbs only for Hajj season
New Delhi : Reports about any bar on Indians travelling to Saudi Arabia are incorrect. The Saudi Government has not issued any notification on this matter, sources confirmed.
As clarified by official sources, during the Hajj season, temporary restrictions on short-term visas are implemented to regulate the flow of pilgrims and avoid overcrowding- a standard measure that ends with the conclusion of Hajj.
Meanwhile, reflecting on the success of the Hajj pilgrimage arrangements, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan extended his congratulations to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for the smooth and safe conduct of this year's pilgrimage, acknowledging the efforts that enabled millions to perform their rituals peacefully.
He acknowledged the gracious care of the Saudi leadership and its institutions, attributing the success of the Hajj season to their commitment to providing a spiritually fulfilling and secure experience for all worshippers.
Extending similar greetings, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also conveyed their congratulations to the Saudi monarch.
In this context of international goodwill and regional cooperation, Indian pilgrims also participated in the sacred rituals, joining millions in performing Wuquf-e-Arafat, the spiritual climax of the Hajj, the Embassy of India in Riyadh shared on Thursday.
Reinforcing this, the Indian Embassy wrote on X, "Indian pilgrims join millions of other pilgrims today at Arafat to perform Wuquf-e-Arafat, the core ritual of Haj."
Sharing updates from the ground, Consul General Fahad Suri extended greetings in a video message and confirmed that all Indian pilgrims had arrived safely in Arafat, highlighting the coordinated efforts between the Indian Hajj Mission and Saudi authorities to ensure safe and smooth travel, stay, and onward movements of pilgrims.
He appreciated the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and associated service providers for their tireless support and extended wishes for a blessed Eid-ul-Adha and a successful Hajj for all pilgrims.
These developments reflect the strong India-Saudi Arabia bilateral relations, grounded in centuries-old economic and cultural ties. The annual Hajj pilgrimage serves as a key aspect of this deep-rooted connection.
Earlier this year, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Saudi Arabia, the Indian side had expressed gratitude for the Kingdom's care towards the 2.7 million Indian nationals residing there, underlining the people-to-people bonds shared between the two nations.
The Indian government also commended Saudi Arabia for the successful organisation of the 2024 Hajj and acknowledged the excellent bilateral coordination in facilitating Indian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

World Economic Forum report praises India's efforts in shaping global energy transition
New Delhi: Ranked 4th among the world's five largest economies, India holds a critical position in shaping the global energy transition, not only due to its rapid economic growth but also because of its rising energy demand and increasing influence on global emissions and energy policy, according to a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The real measure of the world's shift to clean and sustainable energy lies in the hands of -- the United States, China, the European Union, Japan, and India. These five economies together make up about half of the world's population, GDP, and energy use. More significantly, they are responsible for nearly two-thirds of global emissions, giving them a major role in how quickly and effectively the planet can shift to cleaner energy. Over the past ten years, all five of these economic giants have made progress. India and China showed the most improvement, especially in expanding access to energy and preparing their systems for the future. "Over the past decade, India made significant strides in increasing equity through greater access to energy and clean fuels, while also improving energy regulations and investment in renewable and other clean-energy technologies," said the WEF report In India, strong steps were taken to ensure more people have access to electricity and clean fuels, along with better energy laws and increased investments in solar, wind, and other renewable sources. India still faces challenges. The WEF report highlights the need to improve electricity supply in rural areas, reduce dependence on imported energy, and strengthen grid reliability. More investments in infrastructure, clean energy technologies, skilled workforce, and finance options will be key to moving forward. India's efforts have not gone unnoticed. The report praised India's National Green Hydrogen Mission programme, which supports clean energy industries in different states. For example, Gujarat's chemical industry, Tamil Nadu's renewable energy sector, and Odisha's steel plants are all being supported under this mission, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and boost exports. The WEF report stated, "India made progress in lowering energy intensity and CH4 emissions, creating more favourable energy regulations and increasing clean energy investments." The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) is another important step. It brings in global investors to support India's clean energy projects by reducing financial risks and encouraging private investment. India also made progress in using energy more efficiently and cutting methane emissions. While 77 of 118 countries improved their energy transition scores in 2025, only 28 per cent showed balanced progress across all key areas. India stands out as one of the few emerging economies, making strides on multiple fronts.

"Action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words": Indian evacuee from Iran
New Delhi: A fresh batch of Indian nationals evacuated from Iran landed safely in Delhi on Saturday under Operation Sindhu, as part of the Government of India's ongoing efforts to bring back its citizens from conflict-hit regions. The Indian Embassy in Tehran coordinated the safe movement of students, while the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) ensured their safe return. An Indian national who was evacuated from Iran, Zaffar Abbas Naqvi, recounted how he and his family stayed indoors initially after hearing about the attack on Iran. They later moved to Mashhad, which also came under attack, prompting them to contact the Indian government. Naqvi praised the swift action taken by the government and thanked Prime Minister Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath for their support. "Everything was going fine, but one day we heard that Iran had been attacked. We stayed indoors for some time. We then moved to Mashhad. Soon Mashhad came under attack. We then contacted the Indian government. The action was so swift that we cannot express our gratitude in words. I want to thank Modi ji and Yogi ji who made all the arrangements for us...," said Naqvi. Kulsum, an Indian national evacuated from Iran, expressed relief at being back home safely, saying the situation in Iran was worrisome and the government's help was invaluable. Speaking to ANI, Kulsum said, "The situation in Iran is not good. We were very worried. The government helped us a lot and brought us back home safely." Another Indian national who was evacuated from Mashhad, Mohammad Ali Qazim expressed gratitude towards the Indian government for their help in crossing the border and returning home safely. He mentioned that the situation in Iran, especially in Tehran, was not good. "I am coming from Mashhad. It feels very good to return home... We had gone on a religious journey. The situation there is not good, especially in Tehran... Indian government helped us a lot in crossing the border and bringing us to India. The UP government is also helping us a lot by taking us back home..." he said. The operation continues to bring relief to families across India, with coordinated efforts from both the Central and State governments ensuring the safe return of citizens amid the ongoing tensions in the region. Earlier, chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Hindustan Zindabad' echoed through Delhi Airport late Friday night as a special flight carrying 290 Indian nationals evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu touched down. Emotional returnees, including students and religious pilgrims, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian government for ensuring their safe return amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. The special flight landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11:30 PM IST on Friday night and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Kumar Chatterjee. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said in a post on X, "Operation Sindhu flight brings citizens home. Evacuated 290 Indian nationals from Iran, including students and religious pilgrims, by a charter flight. The flight arrived in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 20 June and was received by Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Chatterjee." He added, "The Government of India is grateful to the Government of Iran for the facilitation of the evacuation process."

India's direct tax collections rise 4.86% in FY26 so far, net collections dip on higher refunds
New Delhi: India's gross direct tax collections for the financial year 2025-26 rose by 4.86 per cent to about Rs 5.45 lakh crore as of June 19, compared to about Rs 5.19 lakh crore collected during the same period last year, according to data released by the Income Tax Department. However, net direct tax collections saw a marginal decline of 1.39 per cent, dropping to Rs 4.59 lakh crore. The fall is primarily attributed to a sharp 58 per cent jump in refunds issued, reflecting faster processing and improved taxpayer services. Advance tax collections during the period stood at Rs 1.56 lakh crore, registering a growth of 3.87 per cent. This was led by a 5.86 per cent increase in corporate advance tax payments, even as collections from non-corporate taxpayers declined by 2.68 per cent. The data shows that while corporate tax collections remained strong, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) saw a decline, and overall growth momentum in collections appears moderated by elevated refund outflows. Recently, the Income Tax Department has introduced the 'e-Pay Tax' feature on its official online portal to facilitate the taxpayers by easing various processes, according to the CBDT. Additionally, in the July 2024 Budget, the government proposed a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act of 1961. The purpose was to make the Act concise and lucid, thereby reducing disputes and litigation. Meanwhile, on March 25, Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the new Income Tax Bill will be taken up for discussion in the monsoon session of Parliament. The Finance Minister has already announced in his budget speech that with the revised tax structure, individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakhs will have no tax liability due to the increased rebate of Rs 60,000. Earlier on March 18, the government encouraged the stakeholders to submit their suggestions on the newly introduced Income Tax Bill 2025. The Bill is currently under examination by the Select Committee for detailed consideration.
