Virgin River fans have been left bitterly disappointed by a new Netflix show that they say is absolutely nothing like the romantic drama
Virgin River enthusiasts have been advising Netflix viewers to give a wide berth to a new series that's been likened to the adored rustic romance.
The beloved show has captivated audiences for six seasons, with anticipation building for a seventh series to continue following the lives of nurse practitioner Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and her former Marine beau, Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
With Virgin River on pause, legions of fans have been on the hunt for kindred spirits in their television line-up to satisfy their craving for homely drama.
Touted alternatives have been Sullivan's Crossing, Firefly Lane, and Hart of Dixie, each carrying a vibe akin to Virgin River's heartfelt narrative.
Yet, a freshly released series has seemingly failed to hit the same emotive notes, if the sentiments of some disgruntled spectators are anything to go by, reports the Mirror US.
The show stirring debate is Ransom Canyon, which follows three ranching families entangled in a longstanding territorial dispute.
Taking the lead is Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland, who, while grappling with personal loss, finds himself drawn to his old friend Quinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly). The plot thickens as a mysterious newcomer arrives, unravelling deep-seated secrets.
Despite the ripe blend of sorrow, family quandaries and love affairs mirroring those sought after by Virgin River fanatics, a candid Reddit post from one devotee conveyed a different narrative.
Their statement read: "Virgin River Dupe - I Think Not. Under advisement of the VR community I started Ransom Canyon and now I know that you all can't be trusted lol.
"I quit after one episode and I don't think I'll return."
They went on to blast Ransom Canyon for giving off "major soap opera vibes" and thought that the on-screen chemistry between the leading pair was lacking.
"They could never compare to Jack and Mel," they added. "By episode one I knew they were meant to be."
This outspoken criticism sparked a mixed reaction from fellow viewers. Many agreed with the assessment of Ransom Canyon.
One user replied: "Same here. Watched half of the first episode and that was it for me. Nothing even close to VR."

Sanjeev, who is one of the standout stars of new Netflix hit Department Q, said: 'The Pride of Scotland Awards are massive and the number of big names who turn out to celebrate our nation's most inspiring people is phenomenal. 'But what the unsung heroes don't realise is that they are the ones who leave the celebrities starstruck because their selfless achievements are far greater. 'As a judge I already know their jaw-dropping stories of bravery and compassion so when you meet them in real life you can't help but be affected. 'They may have eyes like saucers when they see all the stars on the red carpet tomorrow night but mine will be the size of dinner plates when the winners join me and Elaine on stage.' The Still Game star added: 'This will be my third year as host and it's the most fantastic and heart-warming and uplifting event in my calendar. 'I feel we owe it to all the winners to give them as good a night as possible - it's the least we can do after what they do so selflessly for others." Sanjeev, who starred in BBC hit comedy Dinosaur, admitted he has lost count of all the stand-out moments over the years. 'These awards are a reminder to everyone that there is still so much good in the world with folk looking out for their neighbours and going above and beyond to help others in their communities. 'I did a Sunday Mail column for many years and I used to include an 'Angel of the Week' section to highlight the ordinary Scots who are doing extraordinary things. 'The room tomorrow night will be full to the rafters with 'angels' who are quietly making a massive difference to the world which gladdens my soul and lifts my heart.' She added: 'This is my fifth Pride and like Sanjeev said there have been so many magical moments but one of my all time favourites was in 2023 when the hard man of football Graeme Souness started crying on stage while talking about his hero – Isla Grist. "The teenager has epidermolysis bullosa – a rare and painful skin disorder which causes her skin to burn and blister at the slightest touch. She inspired the football legend to swim the channel and raise £4.5million for drug trials – just incredible. 'Another standout came in 2022 when I spotted Lulu in the audience and started belting out the first few notes of Shout as a gag. Next thing I knew she was on stage singing her hit and getting everyone to join in - to this day I believe she only did it to stop me singing. 'Last year seeing wee Wilson trotting along the red carpet in his kilt will be something I will never forget - they really are awards like no other.' Elaine, who became a gran for the second time last year, admitted the Children of Courage get her every year and paid tribute to 2022 winner Zac Gunn who passed away a few weeks ago. She said: 'I have to gird my loins every year to stop myself from greetin.' 'Maybe if adults channelled their less jaded and cynical attitude to life the world would be a better place. Most of these kids are suffering yet they still strive to support and raise funds for others. They are truly remarkable.' We launched our search for our local heroes of 2025 back in January and were inundated with thousands of nominations from across the nation. Categories include The Emergency Services Award, Teenager of Courage, Young Fundraiser, Outstanding Bravery, The King's Trust Young Achiever, Special Recognition and The P&O Cruises Inspiration Award. One of the biggest names attending tomorrow night's glittering ceremony is Succession legend Brian Cox, who is getting ready to take the stage at the Dundee Rep in new play Make It Happen about the Bank of Scotland's role in the 2008 financial crash. Other stars who will be honouring the winners include Sheli McCoy aka Sabre, singer Susan Boyle, Star Wars actor Denis Lawson, singers Nathan Evans, Calum Bowie and Cammy Barnes and Strictly's JJ Chalmers and Dr Punam Krishan. Love Island's Paige Turley and Saint Phnx's Stevie Jukes will be going live from the red carpet and presenter Laura Anderson will be manning the Pride of Scotland bar. For over two years Jules Thomas, the former partner of the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder suspect Ian Bailey, spared her three daughters from the devastating truth that she is suffering from leukaemia. 'I just couldn't bring myself to tell them, to give my girls that worry and upset. I kept it to myself for as long as I could,' she told The Sunday Times. 'Eventually I decided they should know, so I wrote letters at the same time to each of my daughters to tell them.' Thomas now counts herself among the 220 people in Ireland every year who are diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, an incurable, slowly progressing blood cancer. The Welsh-born landscape artist has been embroiled in a legal battle against Netflix for several years. In a long-running High Court case, Thomas claims she was defamed in the three-part documentary series Sophie: A Murder in West Cork. She has alleged that the show, screened in 2021, contains a number of inaccuracies and she also claims in her legal action against the streaming giant and the production company Lightbox Media for injurious falsehood and infliction of emotional suffering. All of these claims are, however, understood to be denied by Netflix and Light Box Media, which are fully defending the action.

Jonathan Bailey 'risked being seconds from death' filming Jurassic World Rebirth
Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey has opened up about joining the Jurassic Park franchise, with him appearing alongside Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in the new film Actor Jonathan Bailey has teased that he risked his life whilst working on Jurassic World Rebirth. He's revealed that he filmed alongside potentially lethal snakes for his role but shared his excitement over the experience. Jonathan, 37 - known for his roles in Bridgerton and more recently Wicked - said he was told that the serpents could kill him within seconds on the set of the Jurassic World film, which is set to be released next month. He's shared that he was instructed on safety measures to avoid a fatal encounter. As reported by the Daily Star, Jonathan recalled: "When you're making a movie, you want to feel the world of the movie as much as possible." He went on to say that he worked on scenes in snake-infested waters for the project. He said: "And my gosh, do you feel it when you're up to your waist in snake-infested waters. You have snake wranglers around you who do make you feel safe, but they also say things like 'be careful around this one. If you get bit, you die in 10 seconds'." He expressed excitement over appearing in the franchise through, saying: "That kind of moment speaks to the visceral thrills that Jurassic movies are all about! I had never had that kind of experience on a set before. It was all very exciting and I hope it's matched by the film." Jonathan suggested that he didn't shy away from stunts whilst on location in Thailand. Describing one intense scene from the production, as reported by the outlet, he said that his "inner child" was "screaming with delight". He said: "We had to shoot a scene where my character must pull someone back into a boat because she's falling off the side. I had water cannons blasting me, the boat's flipping around, and my inner child, which isn't all that inner, was just screaming with delight." Jonathan stars as palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis in Jurassic World Rebirth, which is the seventh instalment in the long-running film franchise that previously starred Chris Pratt. He leads the cast with Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali. Jonathan has shared that he relished the opportunity to play the character. He said about his role in Jurassic World Rebirth: "To play Henry, who embodies the love of nature and our best curiosities about it, was great fun." It's the latest high-profile role in Jonathan's career. In recent years, he's starred as Fiyero Tigelaar in Wicked (2024). He's set to reprise the role in sequel Wicked: For Good (2025), which is scheduled to be released in November. Jonathan is also known for playing Lord Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix series Bridgerton. The show launched on the streaming platform in 2020 and his character was the focus of the second season, which aired in 2022. He's teased that he's been a fan of Jurassic Park for years, having been introduced to the franchise as a child. He said: "I was five when my family took me to Jurassic Park, so a questionable choice by my parents. The characters were so vivid and because it was Spielberg, it was a sumptuous escapist delight."
