Despite rights panel nudge, PU yet to build ramp for PwDs

Chandigarh: Despite being flagged by the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) and receiving a perfect score in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 for "facilities for physically challenged students", Panjab University (PU) still lacks a basic access ramp at the fee counter inside the on-campus SBI branch — a facility nearly every student visits while studying at the campus. Over seven months after the PSHRC issued a notice to PU, the university claims that the responsibility of building the ramp lies with the bank. A university official said the layout plan was prepared by the PU architect office and cost estimates were submitted to SBI representatives in Jan. "We are now awaiting action from the bank," the official said. In its reply to the commission dated Nov 11, 2024, PU had stated that it was working with SBI on finalising a revised ramp layout, after which construction would begin. The university also listed a campus-wide accessibility audit, a Rs 755 crore compliance estimate under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, and a funding proposal under the Centre's SIPDA scheme. But even after these claims, there is no physical progress on the ground. While PU maintains that most buildings are accessible "up to the plinth level" and that ramps and accessible washrooms are built "on request," the lack of basic access at a high-footfall service like the fee counter has raised repeated questions about the gap between official paperwork and lived campus reality. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Unsigned reply draws flak As per information received, the document submitted to the PSHRC was unsigned and carried no name or designation of any responsible official. The commission then directed PU to file a signed reply at least a week before the next hearing — May 29, 2025. With no response received, the matter has now been adjourned to Sept 23. Registrar Prof Y P Verma said the earlier reply was prepared by the equal opportunity cell for PwDs which was sent to the commission. "It generally has a cover letter mentioning the office from which it is issued. But if the commission is specifically seeking a signed reply, we will submit it again," he said.

Residents' body asks Haryana govt to roll back hiked power tariff

Panchkula: Haryana govt's recent decision to hike electricity rates up to four times has sparked public outrage, especially in Kalka and Panchkula. After residents welfare associations (RWAs), Shivalik Vikas Manch has strongly opposed the move, demanding a complete rollback of the revised rates and a waiver of residential electricity bills for economically weaker sections. In a memorandum sent to CM Nayab Singh Saini and the power minister, Manch president Vijay Bansal criticised the govt's decision, citing severe impact on residents already grappling with job losses due to the closure of major industries like HMT Tractors and ACC Cement in Pinjore. He pointed out that unemployment in the area had surged, leaving people in no position to bear additional financial burdens such as inflated power bills. "Households which previously received a monthly bill of Rs 1,000, are now getting bills exceeding Rs 4,000," Bansal said. The senior Congress leader said electricity tariffs in BJP-ruled Haryana, which were already the highest in the region, had pushed industries to neighbouring states like Himachal and Uttarakhand.

Man poses as govt hosp doc, dupes pharmacist of 6 lakh

Mumbai: A pharmacist from Sion East fell victim to a meticulously planned fraud scheme, losing medicines worth Rs 5.66 lakh to a man posing as a government hospital doctor. The complainant, 40-year-old Nilesh Shivprasad Singh, owner of Kalyan Pharma in Sion, approached Sion police after realising that he had been cheated over three separate transactions between April 30 and May 2, 2025. According to Singh's statement, the alleged fraudster introduced himself as Dr. Dipanshu Verma, claiming to be a registered doctor posted at a hospital in Santacruz. Verma contacted Singh via phone and WhatsApp, placing urgent bulk orders for high-value medicines Singh's employees, acting on the confirmed orders, delivered the medicines. Each order was confirmed through WhatsApp and followed by requests to dispatch the supplies immediately to the hospital to a rickshaw driver at the hospital premises on Verma's instructions. In return, cheques amounting to Rs 1.53 lakh, Rs 1.93 lakh and Rs 2.20 lakh were handed over by the rickshaw driver. The cheques were issued from two different bank accounts. When Singh attempted to deposit the cheques in his bank account on May 2, all three bounced. One account was reportedly blocked, while the other account had insufficient funds. Singh's subsequent attempts to reach Verma failed as the contact number was found to be inactive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Realising the elaborate nature of the fraud, Singh filed a police complaint against the fraudster Police have initiated an investigation into the case, which involves forgery, impersonation, and financial fraud. The incident raises concerns over the increasing use of digital platforms to perpetrate scams targeting medical suppliers, particularly those dealing in life-saving drugs.
