PTA faces problems in launching 5G
The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) and Telecom was informed on Thursday that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) faced problems regarding the launch of the 5G internet services in the country.
In a briefing to the committee meeting, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, officials said that not all the subscribers would shift to 5G, as the speed of 4G and 3G services would also improve. They said that PTA would take a decision keeping in view the market players.
The meeting discussed the status of the auction of the 5G spectrum. The PTA officials said that 5G required more spectrum. They added that a policy directive was required from the government for the new spectrum.
The official said that a trial was allowed in 2017, while an advisory committee had been formed established on 5G. The PTA also hired a consultant in November, who has submitted its report, they said, adding that the decision about 5G spectrum would be taken by keeping in mind the market players.
IT ministry officials told the committee that currently, there were three bands were available in Pakistan. They added that after the launching of 5G, not all subscribers would shift to it at once. They further stated that the speed of 3G and 4G services would also increase with the launch of 5G.
Also during the meeting, Universal Service Fund (USF) officials gave a briefing to the committee on its projects in the last three years. They said that USF's mandate was to provide telecom services in rural, remote areas and that it had completed 63 projects in the past three years.
Humayun Mohmand asked the officials about the complaints of the people in affected areas of Balochistan. The USF officials replied that the services were down in some areas because of security issues.
The chairman enquired about the reasons for the internet disruption on the motorway. The USF officials replied that the PTA had taken up this issue and the work was under way to rectify the situation.

To further digital inclusion, especially for female students, PTA—alongside PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen—are deploying free Wi-Fi hotspots for 6-month at HEC-recognized selected universities including women universities to empower students through improved access to digital resources, according to the statement. Moreover, the PTA said, mobile manufacturers have contributed 200 locally assembled smartphones to be distributed among female SIM owners through computerised balloting across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Eid-ul-Adha 2025: Pakistan tanners say collected more animal skins, hides this year
The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has reported an increase in the collection of sacrificial animal skins and hides after Eid-ul-Adha 2025, with the number rising to over 7.4 million this year, against 7.3 million recorded last year. The association cited a decrease in skins and hides wastages this year as one of the reasons for the increase in the collection, but termed the increase 'unusual' amid a decrease in purchasing power and rising costs of animals. Eid-ul-Adha 2025: trade peaks at Asia's largest cattle market in Karachi The association estimated the worth of the collected 7.4 million skins and hides at around Rs7.5 billion, with a cow hide estimated at Rs1,775, followed by goat, sheep, camel, buffalo skins/hides valued at Rs446, Rs47, Rs578, and Rs1,680 each, respectively. These animals skins and hides are widely used in Pakistan by the leather industry to make clothing, footwear, handbags, and different other products.

10pc duty imposed on satellite mobile phones
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will charge customs duty of 10 percent on the import of 'Satellite mobile phone, whether or not functional on cellular networks' according to the revised Pakistan Customs Tariff PCT 2025-26. Plant, machinery and production line equipment used for the manufacturing of mobile phones have been allowed at zero percent import duty. This exemption is available to local manufacturers of mobile phones duly certified by Pakistan Telecommunica-tion Authority (PTA). Zero percent Customs Duty would be charged on the import of cellular mobile phones in CKD/SKD condition. This is condition to the (i) if imported by local assemblers/ manufacturers duly certified by Pakistan Telecommunica-tion Authority (PTA) subject to quota determination by the Input Output Co-efficient Organization (IOCO); (ii) Imports shall be subject to production of type approval certificate from PTA;(iii) Local assemblers/manufacturers shall furnish consignment-wise NOC from PTA.
