ICC announces match officials for WTC final

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday revealed the match officials for the much-anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final between South Africa and Australia.
The final is scheduled to take place at Lord's from June 11 to 15.
New Zealand's Chris Gaffaney and England's Richard Illingworth will serve as the on-field umpires for the final.
Illingworth, who has officiated in the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals, continues to be a mainstay in high-profile Test matches. He is also the reigning ICC Umpire of the Year, having won the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy for the fourth time in 2024.
Gaffaney previously partnered with Illingworth in officiating last year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup final and was also part of the umpiring team during the WTC 2023 final between India and Australia.
In making history, Illingworth will become the first umpire to stand on-field in all three World Test Championship finals to date.
England's Richard Kettleborough, who has officiated in multiple ICC marquee event finals including the Men's Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy, has been appointed as the TV umpire.
He previously served in this role during the WTC 2021 final between India and New Zealand.
India's Nitin Menon will make his World Test Championship final debut as the fourth umpire. Menon was the TV umpire for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final in 2021.
The match referee for the final will be experienced Indian official Javagal Srinath.
ICC Chair Jay Shah praised the credentials of the appointed officials and expressed confidence in their performance.
"We are pleased to announce an experienced team of match officials for the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord's, marking the culmination of a highly competitive two-year cycle of Test matches played around the world," Jay Shah said.
"We strive to select the most qualified and deserving officials for all matches, and we are confident they will perform admirably. On behalf of the ICC, I wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this assignment," he added.
It is pertinent to mention that Australia secured their spot in the WTC 2023-25 final by winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India with a 3-1 series victory in the 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, South Africa reached the final for the first time in history after a dominant 2-0 whitewash series win over Pakistan.

Head says new-look Australia can cope without Smith, Labuschagne
SYDNEY: Travis Head said Monday Australia were experienced enough to cope as they prepare for their first Test without Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne since 2018. An out-of-form Labuschagne has been dropped for the opening Test against the West Indies in Barbados this week, while fellow batting stalwart Smith is nursing an injured finger. Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis, who have only played two Tests each, compared to the combined 175 of Smith and Labuschagne, replace them. But Head said he was not concerned. 'They (Smith and Labuschagne) are still around the squad, so it still feels similar at the moment in the build-up,' he told reporters in the West Indies. 'Getting into the game will be a little bit of a new look, but it's guys who have already played, guys with experience already in a short amount of Test match cricket.' Not since the Boxing Day Test against India in 2018 – when Smith was serving a year-long ban for ball-tampering – have Australia fielded a Test team without either him or Labuschagne. Australia in a good Head-space despite shaky Champions Trophy buildup Labuschagne has played 53 consecutive Tests, according to Cricket Australia, while Smith's streak stood at 51. Konstas is expected to open at Kensington Oval with Usman Khawaja – a role Labuschagne filled in the recent World Test Championship final – with Inglis coming in anywhere from three to six. Head, who usually bats at number five, said the team were prepared for any scenario. 'As a batter, you're planning for anything at the moment and then once we get a look at the lay of the land, we'll come up with a plan,' he said. 'This is a very experienced team. 'We take a couple of guys out, but I find it a very mature and experienced group that if conditions moved in-game, and we needed to win a game of cricket, I think anyone's (able) to move around.' Australia play three Tests against the West Indies with the first beginning in Barbados on Wednesday.

Canada cruise to T20 World Cup 2026
Canada have booked their place at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, following an emphatic victory over the Bahamas in the Americas Qualifier at the Maple Leaf North-West Ground on Saturday. Playing at home, Canada maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament, registering their fifth consecutive win to seal qualification. In a dominant display, bowlers Kaleem Sana and Shivam Sharma picked up three wickets each to bundle out the Bahamas for just 57 runs. Chasing the modest target, Canada wasted no time, racing to victory in only 5.3 overs. Dilpreet Bajwa starred with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 36 off just 14 deliveries to complete the rout. Led by Nicholas Kirton, Canada entered the regional qualifier as strong favourites, having competed in last year's T20 World Cup held in the USA and the Caribbean. They opened their campaign with a commanding 110-run win over Bermuda, followed by a 59-run victory against the Cayman Islands and a 10-wicket triumph over the Bahamas in the first round of fixtures. In their second encounter against the Cayman Islands, a rain-shortened five-over contest, Canada posted 82 runs and secured another convincing win by 42 runs. With this result, Canada join co-hosts India and Sri Lanka, along with Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, United States and West Indies who have already qualified for the expanded 20-team tournament. Labuschagne dropped for first WI Test
Australia on Friday dropped Marnus Labuschagne for the opening match of their three-Test tour of the West Indies after a poor run of form while Steve Smith is out injured. Teenager Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis come into the starting XI for the opening match in Barbados starting on Wednesday. Labuschagne opened the batting in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last week but managed scores of only 17 and 22 on a challenging Lord's pitch. His last hundred for Australia in Test matches was in July 2023, against England at Manchester. Since then, Labuschagne has averaged 24.7 with the bat, in 16 matches. "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team," chair of selectors George Bailey said. "He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects. "We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively." Smith injured his finger while fielding in the slips at Lord's. He left the field and did not return, watching South Africa's winning run chase from the pavilion. "Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that," Bailey said. The 19-year-old Konstas will earn his third cap for Australia, and his first since January. He made a blistering debut against India in December, blasting 60 from just 65 balls opening the batting and playing a number of audacious scoop shots against Jasprit Bumrah. Konstas managed only 53 runs in his next three innings, but the teenager's raw talent has selectors excited. Inglis will also make his third appearance in Test cricket, having made 102 on debut against Sri Lanka in January. Bailey said the batting order and final team would be determined closer to the first Test.
