Human Rights Forum urges Andhra Pradesh Government to compensate deceased farmer
The Human Rights Forum (HRF) Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) and BC Welfare Association (BCWA) have called upon the State Government to implement G.O. (MS) No.43 that provides financial assistance of ₹7,00,000 to the family of Balleda Narasimha Murthy (58), a farmer of Peddhakhojiria village in Kanchili mandal in the Uddhanam region of Srikakulam district.
Narasimha Murthy ended his life on April 9, 2025, as pressure mounted on him to repay the debts he incurred because of successive crop failure.
A six-member HRF-RSV and BCWA team visited Peddhakojiria in Kanchili mandal recently and interacted with Ms. Neelaveni, wife of the deceased farmer, and their son Praveen. The team also interacted with local farmers and residents of Makarampuram village about the ongoing agrarian crisis in the Uddhanam region.
According to HRF, Narasimha Murthy cultivated cashew and coconut on an acre of his own land and leased an additional eight acres. He paid the lease amount in advance. The HRF said 'Narasimha Murthy was denied adequate institutional credit, forced to borrow from private sources at high interest rates to cover farm-related expenses.'
'With several years of scanty rainfall coupled with his coconut crop being ravaged by pest, he was pushed into deep debt. He was under regular and persistent pressure from money-lenders demanding repayment. Driven to utter despair, he ended his life on April 9,' the HRF said.
The HRF alleged that, though more than five weeks have passed since Narasimha Murthy passed away, the three-member divisional verification committee headed by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) has not visited Peddha khojiria to conduct an inquiry. 'The G.O. 43 mandates that the RDO-led committee visit the village, elicit relevant details and forward proposal to the Collector within a week of the death. In effect, the family has received no assistance, financial or otherwise, from the government. This manner of negligence defeats the very purpose of G.O. 43,' the HRF said.
'Over the past year, there have been five deaths (of farmers) in the North Andhra districts, including that of Narasimha Murthy. However, not a single family has been rendered assistance under G.O 43,' the HRF said.
The HRF demanded that the three-member divisional level committee visit Peddha khojiria at the earliest, conduct a proper inquiry and ensure justice to Narasimha Murthy's family as laid out in G.O. 43.
The fact-finding team that visited Narasimha Murthy's family include G.Balu, RSV State co-convenor, K.V. Jagannadha Rao, HRF State president K. Anuradha, HRF Publications editor, K. Venkat Rao, HRF Srikakulam district Executive Committee (EC) member. V.S. Krishna, HRF Andhra Pradesh & Telangana Coordination Committee member and B. Dhilli Rao, BCWA State general secretary.

Madras High Court Stays Probe Agency ED Action Against Producer Vikram Ravindran, Associate
Chennai: In a major setback for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the high-profile TASMAC money laundering probe, the Madras High Court has stayed proceedings against Tamil film producer Vikram Ravindran and his associate, ruling that the ED's search and seizure operation was without authority and jurisdiction. The court also directed the ED to return all properties seized during the raid including electronic devices, with a caveat that the petitioners must not tamper with or alienate the contents of the returned items. Delivering a scathing verdict, the court noted that the ED failed to produce any incriminating material that would justify initiating proceedings against the petitioners. Despite being given two opportunities to submit evidence justifying the search, the agency could not furnish any document that suggested Mr Ravindran and his friend were involved in money laundering linked to the Rs 1,000 crore TASMAC scam. "The material presented in a sealed cover does not contain any semblance of information, which may have led them to believe that the petitioner may be involved in the offence of money laundering," the court said. It said no incriminating documents were in the ED's possession when the search was first authorised. The petitioners said they had no role in TASMAC operations and were not named in any of the 41 first information reports filed by the state's directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption. The ED earlier claimed to possess incriminating documents and alleged the duo's involvement. Alleging a Rs 1,000 crore scam in TASMAC, the government arm that sells liquor, the ED accused distilleries and bottle manufacturing firms of colluding in corrupt practices amounting to over Rs 1,000 crore. In a significant development during the hearing, the ED said it had no authority to seal the petitioners' properties and agreed to de-seal the premises. This comes at a time when the Supreme Court has already stayed the ED probe into the TASMAC case, expressing concern over the agency's aggressive approach. The Supreme Court questioned the very basis of criminal action against a state-run corporation, particularly when FIRs were registered against individuals and not the corporation itself. It had also warned that the ED was "crossing all limits" and "breaching the federal structure". The ruling DMK has repeatedly alleged that central agencies like the ED are being misused by the BJP-led Union government to target Opposition-ruled states and political rivals. The BJP has denied all such charges. Opposition parties have highlighted the ED's alleged coercive role in extracting large political donations under the now-scrapped electoral bonds scheme.

Cheating row in police recruitment: Ex-Himachal CM demands CM's resignation, SIT probe into exam scam
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 20 (ANI): Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday launched a blistering attack on the Congress-led state government over the recent allegations of mass cheating and irregularities in the police recruitment examination, calling it 'a betrayal of the youth of Himachal Pradesh'. Thakur demanded that the government immediately constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the scam and that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu resign on moral grounds. 'The entire recruitment process has been reduced to a mockery. Videos show blatant cheating, discussions inside exam halls, and candidates solving papers in groups. This is not just mismanagement, it's criminal. If the Chief Minister has any moral standing left, he should step down,' Thakur told reporters at a press conference in Shimla. Thakur called the police recruitment drive the only significant recruitment drive in the past two and a half years of the Congress government's tenure, claiming that the entire process was compromised. 'This government shut down the Staff Selection Commission. After two and a half years, it held one police recruitman, which is now under serious question. The candidates have submitted video proof of cheating taking place inside examination halls in Shimla, Palampur Road, and Chamba,' he said. 'If the government claims transparency, then why not release the CCTV footage from these centres? What are they afraid of?,' Thakur asked. He further said that there were allegations of mobile phones being allowed inside the examination halls, and that no invigilators stopped students from openly cheating. The former CM pointed out that two individuals, Vikram and Balwinder from the Dehra area of Kangra district, were arrested in the case. But he added that just two arrests cannot cleanse a scam of this magnitude. 'Reports suggest that candidates were called to Haryana and promised success in the exam in exchange for lakhs of rupees. Transactions of up to Rs 35 lakh have been cited. Who made these promises? Who were these candidates? At least 15-16 people were summoned for investigation,' he said, adding that the matter must be investigated at a state-wide level. 'In our tenure, when similar allegations emerged, we immediately cancelled the exam and announced a SIT investigation the very next morning. We even handed over cases to the CBI when required. This government is silent and evasive.' Thakur added. Thakur warned that candidates feared the CCTV recordings could be destroyed, much like the pen drive in the Vimal Negi case, which was formatted and later recovered. Revisiting the promises made by Congress before the 2022 Assembly elections, Thakur said, Congress's 'guarantees' are now exposed, no jobs, no action. 'They promised 5 lakh government jobs in 5 years, and 1 lakh in the first year. But now the Chief Minister says they never made such a promise. I was in the Assembly when the Congress Guarantee Document was read out, which clearly mentioned the 5 lakh jobs. Why the contradiction now?,' Thakur said. He alleged that most appointments during the current regime were the result of recruitment processes initiated by the previous BJP government, for which budgetary and financial clearances were already secured. 'These are not new jobs. The only new recruitment was for police, and look what happened. Even in the nursing recruitment drive, Congress is outsourcing jobs through agencies linked to their own leaders and relatives,' he said. Thakur also criticised the outsourcing model, saying it was being used to bypass transparency and provide jobs to Congress loyalists. He also attacked the use of outsourcing agencies in nursing and other sectors, alleging that these agencies are run by Congress leaders and their relatives, with youth getting only Rs 6,000 out of the Rs 10,000 allotted per position. 'Candidates are getting Rs 6,000 while Rs 10,000 is allocated, where is the rest of the money going? To the agencies, which are run by Congress leaders. Even in my own constituency, such practices are taking place.' He said. Thakur said the Congress government is struggling with internal trust issues, pointing to the resignation of a young minister and the subsequent resignation of his father, a senior cabinet minister. 'Despite having a majority, their own MLAs have no faith in the leadership. In such a situation, the Chief Minister has no moral right to remain in office,' he said. Thakur said that despite the central government providing Rs 2,006.40 crore in additional disaster relief, and over Rs 4,000 crore in total, the state government has failed to distribute aid effectively. 'Even 93,000 homes were sanctioned, but affected people are still homeless. The state government is thankless and shameless. PM Modi stood with the people of Himachal, but the state administration continues to falter.' He said. Thakur demanded that the results of the police recruitment examination be withheld until the investigation is complete, and a statewide probe under an SIT be ordered immediately. 'This government has completely collapsed on the employment front. If serious allegations like cheating during exams are not probed, it sends a dangerous signal to the youth. I demand the Chief Minister step down and let an impartial SIT uncover the truth,' Thakur said. (ANI)

Pregnant woman carried in a sling in Gujarat's Chhota Udepur, exposes crumbling claims of 'Vikas'
The video that surfaced on June 20 is a repeat of what has become a tragic routine in the area: critical patients being hoisted like loads, carried across muddy stretches to reach an ambulance waiting on the main road. Villagers reveal that even top officials, including the Collector and the Taluka Development Officer (TDO), have been stuck in the same area due to the pathetic road conditions. Yet, nothing changed. 'Pregnant women and the critically ill are regularly carried in this dangerous way,' a local resident said. 'Sometimes, people don't survive the delay," he added. Locals claim that despite multiple representations, the cries of these tribal communities remain unheard. The incident recalls an earlier tragedy from October 2024, when a woman in labor from Turkheda village died after being carried in a sling due to the absence of roads. The horrifying event led the Gujarat High Court to order the construction of roads in such regions. However, the ground reality remains unchanged, even after multiple months. The continuing string of similar incidents indicate not only administrative apathy but also a blatant disregard for the judiciary's orders. Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi launched a fierce attack on the BJP-led state government, saying, 'This is an incident that once again shames Gujarat due to the indifferent rulers. The government keeps blowing its trumpet of development and health services, but the reality is that even jeeps of Collectors have been trapped in these muddy patches.'
