Magistrate cites lax border control for denying Ugandan rape accused bail
CAPE TOWN - A magistrate in the Boksburg court has cited the state of South Africa's borders as one of the reasons to deny bail to a Ugandan national accused of rape.
The 29-year-old man is facing two counts of rape linked to the violation of an 11-year-old girl from Boksburg.

The man has denied the crime and had brought a bail application, telling the court that his family and his business needed him to stay afloat.
But magistrate Sipho Manana said the man failed to provide exceptional circumstances for his release, which was a requirement based on the seriousness of the crime.
The accused tried to convince the court that giving his passport to the investigating officer would keep him in the country pending the outcome of the case.
But the magistrate was not sold.
"I know for sure that borders from South Africa and other African neighbouring countries are not that strict. They are not controlled to the strictest condition that one can say for sure that if you do not have a passport, then you cannot evade the country."

Bolt South Africa says it is taking the case of TikTok content creator Simthande Myeza seriously after he was allegedly abducted and robbed during a ride in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. According to a statement from Myeza's family, he was abducted last Tuesday in the Umbilo area in Durban and released in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The family said Myeza became suspicious when the driver took a different route, and he then asked the driver to make a U-turn. 'That's when the driver became agitated and eventually stopped the car. Two other African males approached the vehicle, and one of them pointed a gun at Simthande. The other blindfolded him, tied his hands and drove with him to an unknown location,' the statement read. We're committed to handling this matter with the utmost seriousness and will fully support the relevant authorities in addressing it,' Motsoeneng said. Motsoeneng added that Bolt is still in the process of verifying the trip information and will engage with all parties to ensure the matter is thoroughly addressed. 'The safety of our community is our highest priority. We remain deeply committed to doing everything we can to ensure that every ride on Bolt is a safe and trusted experience. 'We will continue to work closely with the relevant law enforcement authorities and act decisively as soon as we have the information needed to do so.' Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools. South African engineers granted clemency by Equatorial Guinea's President

Image: Supplied Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has confirmed that Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the President of Equatorial Guinea, has granted clemency for the two South African engineers imprisoned for drug trafficking charges two years ago. The families of engineers Peter Huxham and Frik Potgieter also expressed their relief and gratitude to everyone including the South African government for never giving up on their plight Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, said the release was a coordinated effort between the department, the families and their employer, SBM Offshore. 'The Government of the Republic of South Africa welcomes the release of Mr Peter Shane Huxham and Mr Frik Potgieter from detention in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. This release follows the granting of clemency by the President of Equatorial Guinea,' said Phiri. The duo were arrested on February 9, 2023 on drug trafficking charges and were sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment. They were working offshore in the central African country, and the arrest came just two days after a South African court ordered the seizure of a super yacht, called Blue Shadow valued above R300 million, and two luxury villas belonging to vice president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro 'Teodorin' Nguema Obiang Mangue, the son of the president Mbasogo. "South Africa expresses its sincere gratitude to the Government of Equatorial Guinea for considering and ultimately granting this Presidential pardon, allowing Mr Huxham and Mr Potgieter to return home to their loved ones,' said Phiri.
