Aaron-Wooi Yik capable of getting top spot ahead of world meet
KUALA LUMPUR: A strong showing at the Japan and China Opens next month could lift national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to the world No. 1 ranking and boost their seeding prospects at the world championships, said head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi.
He said clinching the world's top ranking could help the Olympic bronze medallists secure a better seeding at the world championships in Paris this August.
'Aaron and Wooi Yik are already ranked second in the world, which I think is good enough to help with their seeding at the world championships.
'But if they can become world No. 1 before then, why not? Of course, that would be even better,' he told reporters after a national team training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are ranked second with 89,870 points, just 1,220 points behind their compatriots and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
However, Herry said the world No. 1 ranking is not the top priority for Aaron-Wooi Yik, as it is more important to be well prepared for all tournaments.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are the first and only Malaysians to have won a world badminton title, achieving the feat in 2022 in Tokyo after defeating Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.

Durant, who had already forged a link with PSG through the club's minority shareholder Arctos Partners, will partner on a wide range of commercial, investment and content production initiatives. The 36-year-old will also support the club in its strategy of diversification and growth on sporting and commercial fronts, including developing the club's strategy in the United States and other international markets. PSG said in their release that Durant would provide "expertise on PSG's multi-sport strategy, particularly regarding future projects in the field of basketball". Olympic medallists Campbell, Stona switch to Turkey
JAMAICAN athlete and Olympic shot put bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell has switched his allegiance to Turkey, with media reports saying his compatriot and discus gold medallist Roje Stona has followed suit. The Trinidad & Tobago Guardian stated both athletes would receive a $500,000 signing bonus to make the switch as well as monthly financial support. Campbell's agent confirmed he had changed his allegiance while Reuters has contacted Stona's representative and the Jamaica Olympic Association for comment. Campbell finished third in the shot put at Paris 2024 behind Americans Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs while Stona broke the Olympic record four days later in the discus to claim his country's first-ever medal in the event at the Games. They are not the first Jamaican athletes to switch nationalities, with sprinters Jak Ali Harvey and Emre Zafer Barnes also representing Turkey when they made the switch in 2015.
