This is almost certain to be the last day of this Test. 14 wickets fell on the first two days and according to Australia's captain Pat Cummins, the pitch is only getting more difficult to bat on — which should make it difficult for the remaining 12 batters to survive and beat the trend.
But it's here that the margins of big matches come into play. A lot of the 28 wickets so far can be put down to poor batting and a lack of preparedness for the moving red cherry. South Africa's bowlers have done the job for them twice now, by getting the Aussies out for 212 in the first innings and then keeping them down to 144/8 in the third. Australia having a lead of 218, the most runs for an innings in this Test, is not on them.
It is as big an invitation as it could be for the Proteas' batting lineup to step up. It'll require an effort of the highest — almost unprecedented — order to do it against this bowling attack at this stage. But there's no tomorrow to this opportunity to end the 27-year-long wait for a senior men's ICC title; it's now or an even more painful wait for several months and probably years.

Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar on Sunday (June 22) backed Indian team management's decision to include Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI for the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds. According to Manjrekar, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, Krishna is India's No. 2 seamer, and he is bowling better than Mohammed Siraj. He feels the Karnataka-based fast bowler is doing the best he can, and if he manages to get a couple of wickets, then it will help him build confidence, and he might get better. 'If you see Prasidh Krishna in this Test match as opposed to the Test he played for India earlier in South Africa, he's looked the best to me. Yesterday (Saturday, June 21), although he didn't quite get the wickets, he was still India's number two seamer. He was better than Mohammed Siraj, certainly more potent than Shardul Thakur. So, India made the right choice and went for him; this is Prasidh Krishna doing the best he can. With time, if he gets a couple of wickets and builds confidence, he might just get better and better. I will not be critical of Prasidh Krishna with the way he's bowled—he has done everything he possibly could to the best of his ability," Manjrekar said on 'Match Centre Live' after the first session on Day 3. Krishna, who last played a Test match for India against Australia in Sydney from January 3-5, 2025, managed to retain his place in the red-ball squad for the England tour by producing a super show for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025.
