Kamal Nath's nephew and industrialist Ratul Puri discharged in Rs 354-crore bank fraud case

A Delhi Court discharged industrialist Ratul Puri, who is senior Congress leader Kamal Nath's nephew, on May 24 in a Rs 354-crore bank fraud case in which Puri and others had been accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of defaulting on loans and resulting in financial losses to multiple banks. 'From above discussion, there is sufficient material on the record to come to a prima facie view that the allegations levelled against the accused persons have predominant contours of a dispute of civil nature and does not have the markings of a criminal offence. The dispute predominantly of a civil nature is being given colour or shades of criminal nature,' said Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal of Rouse Avenue Court in his order. What tilted the case in the favour of the accused people was the fact that the banks had denied the CBI sanction to investigate and prosecute 40 of their officials. 'As the competent authorities qua bankers have even shut out initiation of investigations against all of their bankers, totalling 40 in numbers u/S. 17A of PC (Prevention of Corruption Act) Act, it shows that present case was not having any criminal complexion or no criminal ingredients of cheating, deception or inducement,' noted Judge Aggarwal. '…senior bankers/Government officials, who are experts in the field of banking and know nitties and gritties of all the loan transactions, were fully conscious of this aspect when they denied approval u/S. 17 A of PC Act and they can also be said to be aware that the matter was of civil nature for which banks may have civil remedies available to them, as per law,' he added. The CBI had accused Ratul Puri, his wife Nita Puri, and private company Moser Baer India Limited (which made CDs and DVDs) of defrauding a consortium of banks. It had alleged that the goal of the accused was to defraud the banks by siphoning off money by misusing loans granted to them. The CBI had also alleged that the siphoning of funds could not have been possible without the 'active connivance of bank officials' since it was the job of the bank officials to monitor the loans. '…there was no diversion or siphoning or misuse of the loan(s) at any point of time and the loans were utilised for the purposes for which it was disbursed as per the RBI guidelines and the banking norms and in view of the fact that the senior functionaries of the different banks/consortium of banks running into 40 in numbers were even denied approval to investigate u/S. 17A of the PC Act by the different sets of competent authorities,' said Judge Aggarwal.

Cyber fraudsters dupe rtd bank manager

Anantapur: Cybercrimecontinues to escalate, with criminals adopting new tactics to exploit fear and vulnerability. In a recent incident, a retired bank manager from Anantapur lost over Rs 1.04 crore after falling prey to a sophisticated cyber scam known as 'digital arrest.' According to police sources, the victim, who had retired as a bank manager, was targeted by fraudsters, who identified him as someone with significant financial assets. The scam began when he received a WhatsApp call from an individual claiming to be a CID officer. The caller falsely informed him that his name had come up during a money laundering investigation and that some suspects had mentioned him during interrogation. To make the threat more convincing, the fraudsters shared his Aadhaar card number, heightening his fear and anxiety. Believing the claims to be true, the retired banker was coerced into transferring money under the pretext of getting his name cleared from the case. Over a period of time, four individuals, posing as officials at different levels, pressured him into transferring money in multiple transactions, amounting to a total of ₹1.04 crore into various accounts provided by the fraudsters. Once the transfers were completed, all contact from the perpetrators ceased, and their phones were switched off. Realizing he had been deceived, the victim approached the police and lodged a formal complaint. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Police have cautioned the public not to panic or respond to such fraudulent calls. They emphasized that no government agency or law enforcement authority will ever demand money over the phone. Fraudsters often use fear tactics and personal information to manipulate victims, making them believe the threats are real. Citizens are advised to remain calm, verify the identity of callers, and never share personal or banking details over suspicious calls. Authorities also warned against clicking on links or downloading files sent through unknown sources, as these can lead to significant financial loss. This case serves as a stark reminder that fear and lack of awareness are the biggest tools in the hands of cybercriminals.

Cyber impostor uses Telangana Home Secretary's DP to extort Rs 50K

HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has registered a case against a cybercriminal for attempting to extort money from a 61-year-old businessman by impersonating Home Secretary Ravi Gupta on WhatsApp. According to the complaint, the victim received a WhatsApp voice call on June 19 from a +92 series number, typically associated with Pakistan. The caller ID displayed the name 'CBI Vikram' with the display picture of Ravi Gupta, the current home secretary of Telangana. The call lasted nearly eight minutes. A woman, claiming to be from cybercrime authorities in Canada, informed the businessman that his daughter had been arrested in a drug-related case. When he requested to speak to her, the caller refused, claiming she was undergoing third-degree interrogation, and even played background sounds of people crying to make the threat seem real. The caller then demanded Rs 50,000 for the daughter's release and shared a PhonePe number for the transfer. 'I asked to speak with my daughter, but she kept threatening me. I almost believed her and thought of sending the money,' the complainant said. He eventually disconnected the call and contacted his daughter in Canada, who confirmed she was safe at home. Realising it was a scam, he reported the incident to the police. A case was registered under Section 66-D of the IT Act and Sections 308(3), 318(4), 319(2) and 338 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
