No commitment to compensation for landowners affected by Roscommon fires
A delegation of local representatives, including Oireachtas members Michael Fitzmaurice TD (Independent Ireland), Claire Kerrane TD (Sinn Féin), Martin Daly TD (Fianna Fáil) and Senator Gareth Scahill (Fine Gael) met with the minister to discuss fires which burned over 500 acres in the Gorthaganny area alone.
Turf banks, family farms, fencing and forestry investments were damaged by blazed which ripped through the area last month during a dry spell of weather. A large amount of a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) containing a rich variety of flora and fauna was also burned.
Minister Healy-Rae described the damage as 'a very serious situation that has impacted people's land, livelihoods and long-term environmental assets' but did not commit to providing state compensation.
A well-attended public meeting in Gorthaganny heard that most of the land burned in the fires was not insured. There is currently no government compensation available for landowners who lose forestry to fire.
Minister Healy-Rae said the Department of Agriculture would continue to engage closely on the matter. He also confirmed that district inspectors would be deployed to assess the damage on the ground.
'We have to learn lessons from this and take every step to ensure proper support, coordination, and prevention going forward. My department will continue to engage constructively, and I've asked our local forestry teams to prioritise inspections in the area,' said the Kerry-based TD.
Speaking on Shannonside FM, Roscommon-Galway TD Martin Daly said there was 'no indication' that any compensation would be granted to landowners.
'In fairness to Minister Healy-Rae, he was honest with people there and I think the people who have suffered losses, which some of the representatives from Gorthaganny had, they understood what he was saying to them,' he said.
'Now, they may not have liked all the answers he gave them, but it was an honest conversation.'
The National Parks and Wildlife Service have assessed the area and are preparing a remediation plan for the damage done to the SAC.

POLITICIANS have condemned an attack on the Belfast Islamic Centre, in which a viable device was thrown into the building, with Secretary of State Hilary Benn branding it 'shameful'. A window was broken and the device thrown into the building on University Road shortly after 10pm on Friday while people were praying inside. Police have said a man has been arrested under the Terrorism Act and are investigating the possibility that it is a hate crime. "Police received a report at approximately 10.10pm on Friday, June 20 that an object had been thrown through a window at a property in the University Road area of the city," said Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally. "Officers attended and carried out a search of the building where a suspicious device was discovered. "Ammunition Technical Officers attended and examined the object which was determined as viable and has since been removed for forensic examination." 'Sinister attack' Posting on Twitter/X, Mr Benn wrote: "Deeply concerned by the shameful attack on the Belfast Islamic Centre last night. "Hatred of this sort has no place in Northern Ireland." Deirdre Hargey, Sinn Féin MLA for South Belfast, said such incidents are 'fuelled by hate'. "I unreservedly condemn this sinister attack, and I welcome that the suspect is now in custody, thanks to the vigilance of a member of the public," she said. "No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship, and my thoughts are with everyone affected. "Acts like these, fuelled by hate, spread fear and division, and target people who have come to our communities to build a life and call this place home. "It's vital that all political leaders speak out and stand united against this disgusting behaviour." "My constituency office is just yards away and we share one of the tolerant, diverse parts of the island of Ireland. "Not alone are there people from all over the world, there are churches and religious groups of an extraordinarily persuasions in that small patch of Belfast. "An attack on one of them is attack on the tolerance we cherish. "So this attack and the hate it represents will not go unchallenged and will not be allowed to represent our city and our region." The PSNI said a 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene under the Terrorism Act and remains in police custody at this time. "It is important to stress that, while the suspect has been arrested under the Terrorism Act, the motive for the attack has not yet been established," added ACC McNally. "Detectives from Serious Crime Branch are currently working at pace and are exploring a number of potential motivating factors including the possibility that this is a hate crime." Israel targets two cetrifuge production sites in Iran as Arab minister meet in Turkey
ISRAEL TARGETED TWO centrifuge production sites in Iran overnight during a second wave of strikes on the location since the start of the war. Isfahan nuclear facility was targeted alongside two other centrifuge production sites, a military official told reporters during an anonymous briefing. The Israeli military is attempting to dismantle Iran's centrifuge production capabilities, the official said, which can assist in the production of nuclear weapons. Israel has also targeted Iran's two main underground nuclear sites, Natanz and Fordo. Iran's atomic energy agency said afterwards that the damage was 'not extensive' and there was no cause for concern about radiation. Israel's first strikes on Iran on 13 June – an unprovoked attack over unproven claims by the Israeli government that Iran was weeks away from developing an atomic weapon – had struck the same facility. Isfahan, in central Iran, is known to have a uranium conversion facility.
