Elderly British Man, 79, Caught Smuggling Drugs Worth Over Rs 2 Crore In Chile

A British pensioner has been arrested in Chile for allegedly attempting to smuggle five kilos of methamphetamine, according to The Metro. The 79-year-old man arrived in Santiago from Cancun, Mexico, and was preparing to travel to Australia.
Authorities detained him after a scanner detected a suspicious substance in his suitcase. Upon conducting a thorough search, officers found a concealed compartment in his luggage where the drugs were hidden. Police estimate that the methamphetamine would have been worth approximately 200,000 pounds (Rs 2.3 Crore) on the streets of Chile.
Airport police chief Sergio Paredes said it was the first time the arrested man had entered Chile.
He told The Metro: "This person came from Mexico, and when he was arrested and taken to the anti-narcotics squad's airport offices, he said that the suitcase had been received by some Mexican nationals at Cancun airport."
The man was due to spend a night in a hotel in the capital before boarding a flight to Sydney.
Paredes said police were still investigating whether the drugs were due to remain in Chile or be smuggled to Australia.
He told local press: 'Prosecutors are looking into this and trying to establish whether the drug was for internal consumption or was due to be transported by this British national to Australia.'
Chilean customs officers released pictures of the four packages they had confiscated, saying, "Customs officials intercepted a foreign citizen with more than five kilos of methamphetamines hidden in a secret compartment in his luggage at Santiago Airport."
"He was stopped after his luggage was scanned and has been remanded in custody."
Meanwhile, a string of recent arrests has highlighted the issue of British nationals getting caught up in international law enforcement for drugs smuggling. Examples include Bella May Culley, 18, from Billingham, and Charlotte May Lee, a former TUI flight attendant arrested in Sri Lanka with a substantial quantity of 'Kush'. The individual detained in Chile is older than many of those recently apprehended.

The ACB had said this was the first instance of it arresting an MLA in the state, and the mines in question are in Todabhim, about 600 kilometres away from the MLA's constituency in Banswara. Party chief Roat said that things would be clearer once they get to meet the MLA. 'We haven't been able to meet the MLA. They are not giving us time to meet, (but once this happens) this will help us clear more things. Moreover, the BJP candidate too had said that he won't let him (Patel) stay around for more than six months,' he said, referring to BJP leader Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya. 'So, due to all of this, we have concluded that he was trapped as part of a conspiracy,' the party chief said. Malviya was elected from Bagidora Assembly in 2023 on a Congress ticket but had left the party to join the BJP last year. He had then unsuccessfully contested the Banswara Lok Sabha (which includes Bagidora Assembly) against BAP's Rajkumar Roat. In the Bagidora bypoll too, BAP's Jaikrishn had defeated BJP's Subhash Tamboliya by a convincing margin of over 51,000 votes. The party's five-member team which investigated the case included party's three MLAs Umesh Meena (Aaspur), Thavar Chand (Dhariyawad), Anil Kumar Katara (Chorasi), party's national spokesperson Jitendra Meena, and party leader Kanti Bhai. MP Roat also said that Patel was 'trapped by people in power as part of a conspiracy. And the people have understood, because the Panchayat Samiti seat which the BJP had won earlier with 600 votes, lost in the by-election. The people have given a befitting reply.' 'We know that if he has made a mistake then his membership might be terminated. But we will have more clarity only once we meet him, and what is said in the chargesheet etc,' party's national president Mohan Lal Roat said.

Pilot molestation: Aggregator cab driver arrested, Mumbai police hunt for his 2 friends

Mumbai: The Mumbai: Ghatkopar police on Sunday arrested the aggregator cab driver who allegedly re-routed his vehicle while driving a 28-year-old woman pilot home on June 19 night, and stopped and allowed in his two friends who went on to sexually harass her. The driver stayed silent, she said in her complaintFIR. She added she was in a state of panic, paid the fare of Rs 530, and he left. On June 20 night, she and her husband filed a complaint at Ghatkopar police station. An FIR was registered the next day and Shaikh was tracked down based on the booking details of the cab. Police are yet to seize the vehicle. Plane crash: DNA matching completed for 251 bodies, 24 handed over to families

Ahmedabad: DNA matching has been completed for 251 victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, with 245 bodies already handed over to their families as of Sunday, said Dr. Rakesh Joshi, superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Additionally, 14 bodies were handed over in Diu, the Union Territory. Ten bodies were sent to London, while 12 non-passenger casualties were also included in the total count. Lawrence Danielbhai Christian, a member of CNI Church Maninagar who died in the plane crash, was laid to rest on Sunday, according to a person close to the family. His funeral service was held at 12 noon in the Ramol area of Ahmedabad. The 30-year-old had come to India to bury his father, but two weeks later, the family was mourning another tragic loss.
