Geens claims dominant triathlon win in Vancouver
The Belgian did not finish the opening race of the season in Singapore but bounced back with a second-placed finish in San Francisco a fortnight ago.
Geens then followed that up in style in Vancouver, leading from the front to seal a first victory of the season and move level on points with German pair Rico Bogen and Mika Noodt behind leader Marten Van Riel in the overall standings.
'It was a hard race,' said Geens. 'It's a bit like it was in my first T100 race in Lake Las Vegas [last year] and on the run I had to go for my life.
'I'm very pleased with the last two races after Singapore and getting two good scores on the board for the Race To Qatar.
'I need two more [scores] before the final and there are lots of opportunities but I'm aiming for the highest, which is two more wins.
'It's very open still, with lots of races to go, but this is a very good step for me.'
Geens formed a lead group on the bike alongside Van Riel, Bogen and Noodt and was able to stay in touch despite briefly dropping off the pace before showing his strength on the run to produce a storming leg and take the tape.
The Belgian eventually took the win by 50 seconds over compatriot Van Riel, having overtaken the overall leader halfway through the run.
He added: 'That was tough! I didn't have the best start in the swim. The pace wasn't too hard but there was a bit of a gap.
'On the bike, the big guys like Kyle [Smith], Marten and Mika went to the front first and it was hard for me and then I got properly dropped.
'I got lucky that Mika got a penalty and I was able to hang onto him and didn't lose too much ground.'
Van Riel did much of the heavy lifting on the bike leg after a tough swim but was pleased with his podium finish having finished a disappointing sixth in San Francisco two weeks ago.
'I'm very happy to be on the podium again,' he said. 'I was leading at the start of the bike, and it took a long time for someone to challenge me. I thought, damn, I must be strong in aero today!
'I think Rico and Jelle have really shown their cards in the last couple of races, and I think I'm just not quite there yet.
'To be this close to Jelle on the run, who's one of the best in the sport is actually good for my morale. My bike is really good at the moment so I'm confident I've got more in the tank for the Race To Qatar.'

Earlier this month, one of his former team bosses, Flavio Briatore, revealed he is in regular communication with Schumacher's wife, Corinna. The Italian, who was in charge at Benetton, where the German won his first two F1 titles, told Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." That followed a more detailed update from Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are." Following that update, here is what we know to be true about Schumacher's condition… Article continues below Claims Schumacher could walk In 2016,German magazine Bunte claimed in an article Schumacher was able to walk and "raise an arm". It raised huge hopes among fans amid previous rumours of progress in his condition. However, the Schumacher family took legal action against the magazine, with the report branded 'irresponsible' . The court hearing resulted in Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, revealing that the then-47-year-old was unable to walk or stand, even with assistance. 'Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,' a family statement said. 'Such speculation is irresponsible because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.' Reported stem cell treatment In 2019, Schumacher was reported to have undergone stem cell treatment in an effort to regenerate his nervous system. Le Parisien claimed he was admitted for transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells, and also quoted an anonymous nurse who claimed Schumacher was showing signs of recovery. "Yes he is in my service," the nurse said. "And I can assure you that he is conscious." However, the racer is believed to have developed muscle atrophy and osteoporosis after being bed-bound. French magazine Paris Match spoke to what it described as "close relatives" ahead of his 50th birthday in January 2019. The magazine quoted one as saying: "When you put him in his wheelchair facing the beautiful panorama of the mountains overlooking the lake, Michael sometimes cries." The Schumacher family refused to comment on any of the reports or confirm the stem cell treatment. Daughter's wedding claim rebuffed Reports surfaced in Germany last year claiming Schumacher was present at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Maria, and Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the family does have a home on the Spanish island, reports that Michael attended his daughter's nuptials were dismissed as 'fake news'. One of his former team-mates, Johnny Herbert, said: 'Unfortunately, from what I understand, that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it.' The seven-time world champion signed his initials 'MS' on the helmet with the aid of Corinna. It will be auctioned to raise money for Stewart's Race Against Dementia charity, set up by the three-time world champion after his wife Helen began suffering from the disease. Stewart confirmed to the Daily Mail: 'It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause, a disease for which there is no cure." However, Stewart did also dispel the idea that Schumacher did the act by himself, adding: "His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.' 'We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.'
