Serbian PM calls trade deal a ‘new page' in Egypt ties
Serbian Prime Minister Guro Macut has described a new free trade agreement with Egypt as a 'new page' in bilateral relations, stating that both countries are working to implement its terms to boost trade and investment.
Speaking at the Egyptian-Serbian Business Forum in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, Macut said the agreement aims to 'achieve the optimal exploitation of possible opportunities to increase trade exchange and push investments' for the economic growth of both nations.
He said the efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation have become tangible thanks to the support of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, which paves the way for stronger ties.
Macut highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations, which he noted were founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and are celebrating 117 years of diplomatic relations. He said the strategic partnership was established during Sisi's 2022 visit to Belgrade and reaffirmed when the draft free trade deal was signed during Vučić's visit to Cairo in July 2024.
While noting that economic exchange currently stands at approximately $122m, the prime minister asserted that there is potential to increase it significantly. He added that around 40 Egyptian-owned companies operate in Serbia and that joint manufacturing projects have already begun in the Egyptian market.
He presented Serbia as an economically stable and safe investment destination, citing its strategic geographical location, government support, skilled workforce, and attractiveness for the software industry. Macut also mentioned Serbia's efforts to advance the 'Open Balkan' initiative to create a common market for the free movement of goods in the Western Balkans.
Macut extended a specific invitation for Egyptian participation in the Belgrade Expo 2027, encouraging a large number of investors to attend to explore cooperation opportunities and create a platform to enhance trade. He also expressed hope that Serbian companies and products would find their place in the Egyptian market.
'We look forward to a new partnership and more cooperation,' he concluded.

Egypt ranked second globally in the number of asylum applications filed in 2024, the statement said. The country adopts a dignity-centered policy toward refugees and asylum seekers, ensuring freedom of movement and access to basic services comparable to those provided to Egyptian citizens, thereby facilitating their integration into society, it added. In a global context marked by escalating crises and armed conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, with refugee numbers reaching unprecedented levels worldwide, Egypt stressed that international cooperation remains the only effective and sustainable path to address refugee issues in all their dimensions. The ministry also highlighted that with the adoption of Egypt's first national asylum law in December 2024 as the first North African country to pass such legislation. Cairo reiterates the need to intensify global efforts to ensure fair and sustainable implementation of burden- and responsibility-sharing principles, including by mobilizing necessary resources to support host countries in sustaining and enhancing services provided to refugees and host communities alike, the statement concluded. China evacuates 119 citizens from Israel to Egypt - Foreign Affairs
China evacuated 119 Chinese citizens from Israel to Egypt on Thursday via the Taba border crossing in Egypt's South Sinai governorate, Chinese News agency Xinhua reported. According to Xinhua, the evacuees entered Egypt from the crossing around 15:30 local time (12:30 GMT) and were then guided onto buses after completing the necessary procedures. The group included 117 students and two Hong Kong residents, who will be transferred to Cairo, the embassy said. "China is highly concerned about our compatriots overseas. Their well-being and safety are always our priority," Xinhua quoted Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang. "We completed all preparatory work efficiently within 24 hours and dispatched an action group to Taba overnight to organize the process of entry," Liao said. He added that the embassy worked closely with the Egyptian government overnight to request passage permits, necessary assistance, and security guarantees. Sun Xue, a postdoctoral fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said that the journey from Jerusalem to the Taba border crossing took about four hours. He noted that during the entry process at the crossing, staff and volunteers from the Chinese embassy in Egypt provided assistance and coordination. 'We are truly grateful to them," Sun said. China is the latest country to use the Taba border as a safe exodus path for its citizens from Israel, after Poland, France, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, following the Iranian retaliation on Israeli attacks. Egypt FM speaks with US, Iranian officials amid Israel-Iran escalation - Foreign Affairs
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate phone calls on Thursday with US Middle East envoy Steven Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This marked the second such discussions in four days as the military escalation between Israel and Iran entered its second week with no immediate solution in sight. According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the calls are in line with directives from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the military escalation between Israel and Iran. During the two calls, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, enforce a ceasefire, and make full use of available diplomatic channels to contain the rapidly deteriorating situation and avert a wider regional crisis.
