#SHOWBIZ: HK actor Sammy Sum once lived on RM27 a day

HONG KONG: Actor and businessman Sammy Sum, renowned for his role in the 2014 crime drama Line Walker, has spoken candidly about the financial difficulties he faced during the initial years of his career at TVB.
In a recent interview with fellow actress Lee San San on her YouTube programme, the 42-year-old disclosed that his monthly salary was once as low as HK$6,000 (RM3,243).
Of this, HK$4,000 (RM2,162) was spent on rent for a flat in Tsim Sha Tsui, leaving him with just HK$2,000 (RM1,081) to cover all other living expenses.
To make ends meet, Sum undertook part-time jobs, occasionally borrowed money from friends, and limited his daily expenditure to no more than HK$50 (RM27).
"I used to walk from Tsim Sha Tsui to this barbecue shop in Mong Kok to buy two meal boxes for HK$20 (RM10) each.
I was surviving on HK$50 a day," he recalled.
"As long as I had a bed to sleep on, I was fine. I could chase my dreams with a simple heart, and that alone made me happy."
Sum, who joined TVB in 2006, first gained recognition for his performance in the 2011 series Lives Of Omission.
His breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the crime drama Line Walker, which earned him a nomination for Most Improved Male Artiste at the TVB Anniversary Awards.
The actor subsequently signed an exclusive deal with Emperor Entertainment Group in 2022, after his TVB contract expired in July 2021.

Hong Kong singer Tommy Yuen arrested for allegedly stealing snacks worth HK$140

Hong Kong singer Tommy Yuen Man-on has been arrested for allegedly stealing snacks from a supermarket, the Post has learned. Yuen, a former member of the defunct Cantopop boy band E-kids, was arrested on Wednesday after he was spotted acting suspiciously by patrolling officers in To Kwa Wan, police said. He allegedly stole items from a Wellcome supermarket and was carrying a credit card belonging to someone else, a police spokesman said. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting. The case is being handled by the Kowloon City district investigation team. Yuen allegedly took 11 items, including bottled drinks, packets of candy, biscuits and coated peanuts, valued at about HK$140 (US$18). Officers also confirmed that the credit card in his possession belonged to a friend, who was contacted to retrieve it at the police station. Yuen, 45, previously served 26 months in jail for insulting police and officials and fabricating a fundraising story. In May last year, Yuen wrote a Facebook post saying that he had decided to leave Hong Kong after facing weekly contact with national security police following his early release from jail in September 2023. He said the frequent questioning caused him fear and distress, leading him to worry about being sent back to prison. In the May 1 Facebook post, Yuen said: 'I have finally left Hong Kong and started living in the United Kingdom!' The father of two also expressed determination to work hard in the UK and continue pursuing music, creating content, posting on social media and starting a YouTube channel. 'I believe that I won't or won't be able to go back to my beloved Hong Kong any more in my lifetime, as it continues to deteriorate day by day,' he had said. However, he was seen in the city in December. Yuen was arrested by national security police in February 2022, charged within 48 hours and kept in custody until his trial. In a court hearing in July 2023, he admitted to breaching a colonial-era sedition law by insulting police and officials on social media, as well as laundering more than HK$700,000 that he had raised by fabricating a story about a teenager facing a riot trial over her involvement in the anti-government protests of 2019. Two months later, he was sentenced to 26 months in jail. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

#SHOWBIZ: Ozzy Osbourne selling cans containing his DNA for fans to 'try cloning him'

LONDON: British rock legend Ozzy Osbourne is selling empty cans that he claims contain his DNA for £335 (RM1,920), suggesting fans can "try to clone him." AsiaOne reported yesterday that Osbourne has collaborated with Liquid Death on this unusual product, dubbed "Infinite Ozzy." Ten empty cans, from which Ozzy reportedly drank and then signed, have been re-sealed with the rocker's DNA supposedly "sealed inside." Liquid Death's PR team stated, "Once technology and federal law permit, fans can use this DNA to try to clone Ozzy in the future and enjoy him for hundreds of years to come." Ozzy is set to retire with a final performance at Black Sabbath's "Back To The Beginning" charity concert at Birmingham's Villa Park on July 5. The 76-year-old rocker joked in a recent video clip, "Whatever you do, don't try freebasing it and never ever inject it." Ozzy admitted he's still unsure whether he'll perform standing up or seated, following multiple spinal surgeries. These surgeries are related to a 2003 quad bike accident at his Buckinghamshire home. A fall in 2019 displaced metal rods inserted into his back from that crash, which he said caused more complications than his Parkinson's disease. Ozzy was diagnosed with a mild form of Parkinson's in 2003 but didn't go public with the news until 2020. "Back To The Beginning" will feature performances from bands including Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Anthrax, and Mastodon.

#SHOWBIZ: HK star Kenneth Ma: Part of my salary goes to wife and parents

HONG KONG: Kenneth Ma is widely respected in the Hong Kong entertainment industry and is often considered one of its "true gentlemen". His dedication to his parents and wife, actress Roxanne Tong, is a testament to this reputation. In a recent interview with HK01, Ma disclosed that he allocates portions of his salary to both his wife and his parents. Notably, Ma was listed as TVB's second-highest-paid actor in 2021, with an impressive annual income of HK$8 million (RM4.3 million). "Finding work in Hong Kong is very stressful. My dad has been retired for over 20 years," he explained, expressing gratitude for the consistent work opportunities he receives in both Hong Kong and mainland China. Describing himself as quite a cautious individual, the 51-year-old actor emphasised his preference for earning in advance and saving for the future. "You never know what you might need money for. The economy isn't doing well these days, so it's important to save for a rainy day," he advised. "I believe money is meant to be spent. When the time comes to use it, you should spend it wisely." Ma will be holding a meet-and-greet event in Malaysia on June 28, alongside his wife and fellow TVB star, Tong.
