The Star06-05-2025

DUBAI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Emirates Airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced Tuesday that it will launch a new daily non-stop flight between Dubai and Hangzhou starting July 30, marking its fifth destination in the Chinese mainland after Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
In a statement, the airline said that from July 30 onwards, it will operate 49 weekly flights to the Chinese mainland. These include two daily flights to both Beijing and Shanghai, daily service to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and the newly announced daily service to Hangzhou.
The airline noted that this continued expansion of its service in the Chinese mainland reflects the deepening ties between the UAE and China, and underscores Emirates' strong commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative.
This new Dubai-Hangzhou route represents "a pivotal milestone in our operations" across the Chinese mainland and East Asia as a whole, said Adnan Kazim, Emirates' deputy president and chief commercial officer.
"Hangzhou, as a rising global hub for innovation, e-commerce, and advanced industries, will open up fresh opportunities for both our passenger and cargo services. It will further stimulate vital economic and technological exchanges between the Middle East and China," Kazim added.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce is committed to building a bridge for economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between China and Sabah. Guided by the principle of mutual cooperation and win-win development, the Chamber actively promotes the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture. This was expressed by Datuk Frankie Liew President of the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, during an exchange session held at the SCCC conference Room with a 14-member delegation from China led by President Zhang Huaxia of the Hui Gong Cultural Committee of China (Zhang Clan Association of China) and the Beijing Hui Gong Cultural Development Centre (Zhang Clan Association of Beijing). Liew said the meeting was more than a cultural exchange — it also symbolised the deep kinship between the two associations and celebrated the grand opening of the new Sabah Zhang Clan Association building. Indian pilgrimages to China's Xizang resume after five-year hiatus

A total of 39 Indian pilgrims formed the first officially organised pilgrimage group this year. They entered China via the Nathu La Pass at about noon on Friday. They will visit the sacred Hindu and Buddhist sites of Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso in Xizang's Ngari prefecture during their 12-day journey. For 68-year-old Damina Bendya, who is making her first visit to China, the mountain is a sacred place. "China and India are neighbors. China is wonderful, and all the staff here have been very warm and helpful," she said. Indian pilgrimages to the two sites in Xizang were suspended in 2020. On April 28 this year, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced their resumption this summer under a bilateral agreement. Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso are the "sacred mountain and lake" for believers of several religions, including Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, Guo said, adding that these pilgrimages are an important part of cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and India. Noting that this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and India, Guo said that China stands ready to work with India to earnestly implement the important common understandings between the leaders of the two countries, and to advance China-India relations on the track of sound and stable development. A second group of Indian pilgrims is scheduled to enter China via the Nathu La Pass on June 25, according to the regional foreign affairs office. - China Daily/ANN

Japan to provide defence equipment to Thailand, seven other nations

According to Kyodo news agency the eight countries -- also including East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Sri Lanka -- are expected to be designated as the recipients of Japan's "official security assistance" (OSA) framework, designed for like-minded partners, for fiscal 2025 from April, the source said. The government is considering providing them Japanese-made drones to help in their natural disaster relief and maritime surveillance missions, according to the source. Japan launched the OSA scheme in April 2023 to help developing countries strengthen their defence capabilities amid security concerns such as the Chinese forces' increasing assertiveness at sea and in the air. In the past two fiscal years through 2024, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Fiji, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines were recipients of the assistance programme. In May, Japan gave the Fiji navy a rescue boat and surveillance equipment, in its first delivery under the OSA framework. In its fiscal 2025 initial budget, Japan earmarked 8.1 billion yen (US$56 million) for OSA assistance, up from 2 billion yen in fiscal 2023 and 5 billion yen in fiscal 2024. - Bernama-Kyodo
