Vithya sets new 400m hurdles meet record

Olympian Vithya Ramraj appears to be in National record-breaking form this season. The 26-year-old from Tamil Nadu broke the six-year-old women's 400m hurdles meet record at the 28th National Federation athletics championships here on Wednesday and predicted bigger things this year.
'I could have gone faster but I was tired after yesterday's 400m. Had we had the hurdles tomorrow, I'd have surely done 54s,' said Vithya who clocked 56.04s and finished more than two seconds ahead of Anu Raghavan.
Vithya equalled the great P.T. Usha's National record of 55.42s at the last Asian Games where she won the bronze. She felt the signs were good that the 41-year-old record would fall this year.
Targeting the Worlds
'I'm aiming for the Worlds and my goal is 54s. I had clocked 56s early this season, a sort of time I could only manage late last season. I'll surely end this year with 54,' said Vithya who also achieved the AFI's qualification standard for the Asians.
Meanwhile Karnataka's P. Yashas clocked a personal best 49.32s while winning the men's 400m hurdles (49.32s) but was disappointed that he could not get the 49.19s for an Asian ticket.
In another corner of the Maharaja's Stadium, Punjab's National Games champion Niharika Vashisht was celebrating a triple jump personal best (13.49m), a last-round effort that saw her beat Kerala's Sandra Babu by 1cm for the gold.
The 29-year-old had completed a two-year doping suspension in February 2022 and now appears stronger than ever, improving her PB by more than 40cm in a year's time.

New Delhi, Jun 22 (UNI) Asian Taekwondo Championships 2024 bronze medallist Rodali Barua said on Sunday that the popularity of martial arts is growing fast in India and the talented sportspersons were benefitting from the improved facilities, thanks to the support extended by the governments, mainly in the north eastern states. In an exclusive chat with UNI, Rodali appeared upbeat about the growth of martial arts. "Television viewership of martial arts has risen as tournaments like Olympics, Asian Games and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) are keenly followed. Right now my discipline Taekwondo is getting so much limelight, earlier most people were not even familiar with the name. Not merely as a sport, martial arts. especially Taekwondo, is very useful for the sake of self-defence, especially for girls" she said. Rodali also believes that sports in the north eastern states of India is booming and the region will produce a lot of quality sports persons for the nation. "The north east region has a lot of sporting talent, earlier paucity of facilities hindered the growth of sports, but now the Assam government, and other states governments are supporting sports and a lot of talent is coming up." The Tezpur native revealed that she initially took up the sport as a means to escape studies but later got very serious about it. "I was not very interested in academies, to avoid studies I opted for sports, my physique was conducive for combat sports, Taekwondo gave me an option to bunk my classes, as I started doing well in competitions and subsequently I was selected in SAI center of Guwahati, I haven't looked back since." She advised aspiring taekwondoins to make hard work their talisman and never give up. "Continue training diligently and never give up, hard work is the most important thing, as the saying goes hard work trumps talent," said Barua. Regarding her future tournaments, Barua said she is currently preparing for the Open ranking tournaments which will serve as a preparation for Asian Games. India, Kyrgyz Republic Play Out Goal-Less Draw In U-23 Friendly

The India U-23 football team played out a goal-less draw against Kyrgyz Republic in their second international friendly in Hisor, Tajikistan. The Blue Colts had travelled to Tajikistan to play two friendly matches, the first of which they lost 2-3 against the hosts, as part of their preparations for the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers later this year, and the Asian Games in 2026. Head coach Naushad Moosa made eight changes to his starting XI from the game against Tajikistan, with only defenders Pramveer, Bikash Yumnam, and Abhishek Singh Tekcham retaining their place. Despite the changes, Kyrgyz Republic looked the livelier of the two teams for a good part of the first half an hour on Saturday, while India tried to create the off-chances through their quick wingers. Resolute not to give up, the Blue Colts clawed their way back and slowly found the momentum they were looking for as half-time ticked closer. Calmer and more composed on the ball, India finally began to create chances.
