
AI needs to be open and inclusive like India Stack
Back in October 2024, I wrote on these pages of a group of 12-year-olds who had figured out an ingenious shortcut to finish their homework. Use 40% ChatGPT, 40% Google, and 20% of their own words. At first, it looked like cheating. But with the perspective of distance, I think it was something else entirely. These children had understood a basic truth: in today's world, what matters most is the result. Not the process. Not the effort. Ask the right question and let the machine find the answer. Don't worry too much about what happens in between. This way of thinking isn't limited to schoolwork anymore, it's showing up in the way digital systems are being built world over—India included.
Over the last few years, India has quietly built one of the most impressive pieces of technology. Between Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, CoWIN, Bhashini, and ONDC– collectively called IndiaStack– it is now used by millions of people. It helps people prove their identity, send money, download documents, get vaccinated, translate languages, and access other public services.
But here's what makes India's system different from those in most other countries: it doesn't keep your data.
In countries like the United States or across Europe, tech companies track what people do online. Every search, every click, every purchase is saved and studied. That information is then used to target ads, recommend content, and even train artificial intelligence systems. That is why The New York Times is now suing OpenAI (the builders of ChatGPT) — because its news articles were used to train a system without permission.
This is why regulators in Europe are telling Meta (which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) not to use user data to train AI unless people clearly agree to it.
In India, the rules—and the values—are different. The digital systems here were built with public money and designed to serve everyone. But they were not designed to spy on people. They were created to work quickly, fairly, and without remembering too much.
Take Aadhaar. All it is built to do is prove a person is who the person claims to be. It cannot track where you go.
Or DigiLocker. It doesn't keep copies of your CBSE marksheets, PAN cards, or insurance papers. It simply fetches these documents from the source when you ask. That's all. It's a messenger, not a filing cabinet.
UPI moves money between people. But it doesn't remember what you spent it on.
Long story short, these systems were built to function like light switches. They work when needed, and switch off when the job is done. The builders insisted it doesn't hold on to your personal information for longer than necessary.
That's why India's digital model is being noticed around the world. It's open, fair, and inclusive. But now, with the rise of artificial intelligence, a new kind of problem is emerging.
AI tools need a lot of data to learn how to speak, listen, write, or make decisions. In India, companies are beginning to train AI using public systems. Language tools learn from Bhashini. Health startups are using patterns from CoWIN to build diagnostic tools. Fintech firms are using transaction frameworks to refine how they give loans. This isn't illegal. It was even expected. These public systems were built to encourage innovation.
But here's the problem: the public helped create these systems, and now private companies are using them to build powerful new tools—and may be making money from them. Yet the public might not see any of that value coming back.
This is where the story of the 12-year-olds we started with, becomes relevant again.
Just like those students who used machines to do most of the work, there's now a larger system that is also skipping the middle part. People provide the inputs—documents, payments, identities. The machines learn from them. And then private players build services or products that benefit from all that learning. The people who made it possible? They are left out of the conversation.
In other countries, the debate is about privacy. In India, the debate must now shift to fairness.
It's not about stopping AI. It's not about banning companies from using public tools. It's about asking for transparency and accountability.
If a company is using data or tools from public systems to train its AI, it should say so clearly. If it benefits from public data, it should give something back—like sharing improved datasets, or allowing its models to be audited. If it's building a commercial product on public infrastructure, it should explain how it used that infrastructure in the first place.
This is not regulation for the sake of it. It's basic respect for the public that made the system possible in the first place.
India's digital platforms were built to serve everyone. They were not designed to store people's information, and that's what makes them special. But that openness can be misused if those who build on top of it forget where their foundations came from.
It's easy to be dazzled by AI. But intelligence—human or machine—shouldn't come without responsibility.
So here's the question worth asking: If the public built the digital tools, used them, trusted them, and helped them grow—why aren't they part of the rewards that artificial intelligence is now creating?

Online scammers dupe Panchkula resident of Rs 18L in stock trading fraud
1 2 3 Panchkula: The cybercrime police have registered a case against unknown individuals for allegedly duping a resident of Rs 18 lakh under the guise of offering high returns through online stock trading. No arrests have been made so far. Jagmendra Singh, 56, a resident of Sector 12A, filed a complaint stating that he was defrauded after responding to a Facebook advertisement promoting online trading. Upon engaging with the ad, he was introduced to a scheme called block trading, which promised daily profits of 10–20%. After sharing his contact details, Singh received a WhatsApp message from a woman named Aarti Bhalla, who claimed to be an assistant to Shripal Shah from Kotak Securities. She shared a profit plan for 2025, including stock details and company credentials such as Sebi registration and CIN numbers. Singh was then sent a form link and added to a WhatsApp group with around 150 members. Between May 10 and May 16, he observed daily stock recommendations and selling guidance within the group. The app displayed his balance, encouraging more investments. He then invested Rs 1 lakh more on May 18 and sold shares on May 19, noting a profit balance of Rs 58,727.25 on the app. Encouraged by the apparent gains, Singh made additional transfers of Rs 60,000, Rs 1,99,000, Rs 1,00,000, Rs 2,00,000, and Rs 70,000 to various accounts. On June 4, he invested Rs 11 lakh in the IPO of Scoda Tube Ltd, bringing his total investment to Rs 18,79,000. The app showed a balance of Rs 1,10,80,241. However, when Singh attempted to withdraw Rs 1,20,000 on June 10, for his son's wedding, the transaction failed. He was informed that his funds were locked in an IPO and that he needed to deposit an additional Rs 8,02,414 to unlock them. Realising he had been scammed, Singh filed a complaint with the cyber police. After verifying the facts, the police registered a case against unknown persons and are scrutinising the accounts to which the money was transferred.

‘Friendship' with 4 women costs bizman 80L in 2 wks
Mumbai: A city businessman's friendship with four women in two weeks through a social media platform cost him Rs 80 lakh. The four women, who contacted him separately, befriended him before convincing him to invest in dollar trading for high returns. They told him that they would trade on his behalf, and gained his confidence by sharing fake profit screenshots. The businessman, in his 50s, sent money in 36 transactions to various accounts provided by the accused persons. He lodged an FIR with the south cyber crime police station, stating the crime occurred between May 16 and June 1. A team led by senior inspector Nandkumar Gopale is probing the case. The businessman told the police that on May 16, while he was surfing the internet, he saw the profile of one Nitya Agrawal on Facebook. She contacted him and claimed she was from an import-export company. Agrawal began chatting with him and shared her WhatsApp number too. She inquired about his business, and he gave her information about it. She told him that she would give him work in her company's joint venture. She then suggested he invest in dollar trading for high returns. When he said he knew nothing about it, Agrawal sent him a link to download an app. He was given a login ID and a password to access the app. He began investing and could see the status of his investment and profit in the app. She gave him various bank account numbers and asked him to send money, claiming they would do dollar trading for him. She also sent Rs 2 lakh to his account to gain his trust. On the same day, he saw the profile of one Dipti Kulkarni, a property dealer. She contacted him, shared her WhatsApp number, and befriended him. She also convinced him to invest in dollar trading, and sent him a link. He was then asked to download an app, and given account numbers to send money. She said she would do trading for him. He sent her money. On May 17, the businessman came across the profile of one Ruchika Bhatt, a property dealer, who began chatting with him and asked him to invest in dollar trading. She also shared her family photo. Similarly, on May 21, he saw the profile of one Aniya Roy, who contacted him and suggested he invest in dollar trading. He followed her instructions, but he asked for his money, the women told him to pay more. The businessman then asked his son to assess the veracity of the apps. After realising that he had been cheated, he lodged an FIR.

A Tale of Yaay! and Hmm: Is India's growth story impressive, or disappointing — or a bit of both?
Purchasing power, stop running away! We're doing fine! India has become the world's 5th-largest economy, eclipsing former economic giants like Britain. In a matter of 1-2 years, it should be the 4th-largest, surpassing Japan. Post-pandemic economic growth is nothing to be scoffed at. India is the world's fastest-growing major economy. Over the past 3 years, a rather turbulent period for the world economy, India's GDP increased at nearly 8% definitely. Yet, is the rising euphoria on India's escalating economic ranking justified? Perhaps. But only after we acknowledge the statistical meaning of being among the world's top-ranked economies. India is the world most populous country. In per-capita terms, we are still ranked as low middle-income. In per-capita nominal GDP, India is 143rd in a ranking of 194 countries. Adjusting for purchasing power parity (PPP), it's at 125th - the rank going up a few notches, but not very much. Humbling, yes. But let's not minimise the importance of being among the top 5 economies in overall GDP. China is 69th in nominal per-capital GDP, and 72nd in PPP per-capita GDP. Yet, its influence on the world stage is not diminished by its per-capita income ranking. China's economic and strategic influence is next to none, other than the US', and sometimes even an example, while most nations have cowed into pleasing Donald Trump and accepted his trade deals, China has decided to fight - and appears to be winning. Many countries are weighing whether they should develop closer alliances with China or the US, and how the others will India's influence will also be measured by its overall ranking in GDP, and not just by its per-capita ranking. Yet, let's keep in view that gap between India and the top two world economies. The US economy is $30 tn in nominal GDP. The Chinese economy is $19 tn. India's is far, far below at $3.9 tn. Humbling, vs expectations: that's the other aspect of India's growth story. In 2018, GoI pledged that India would be a $5 tn economy by 2025. This was a target that many experts viewed with amused scepticism. Of course, progress was halted by the two years of the pandemic. But for those long waiting for the arrival of the $5 tn economy, it's still disappointing to see that we are just halfway towards the 2018-19, India's GDP was $2.8 tn. In 2024-25, it's still $1.1 tn short of the target. Now we hope to achieve that target by of leading sectors - where the world acknowledges India's influence - also brings a mixed tale of optimism and caution. India is the world's largest user of ChatGPT, and, according to a Microsoft, Bain & Company, and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) report, home to 16% of the world's AI talent. Impressive, has the ambition to lead the world in AI and Narendra Modi says, 'AI will remain incomplete without India.' Yet, so far, India doesn't have an indigenous foundational language model, and it's 3-5 years away from developing domestic AI chips. It lags substantially behind other nations in attracting investment in by Stanford University researchers suggest that India received only $1.2 bn in private investment in AI. Of course, the US received the lion's share - $109 bn. But China received 7x than India. A recent article in The Economist asks whether India can be an AI winner. It cautiously concludes that it has a lot to do to lead the most-talked-about achievement on the manufacturing front is that Apple is now assembling 20% of its smartphones sold worldwide in India. By 2026, it is planning to assemble in India all smartphones it will sell in the US. Again, impressive. Yet, the humbling reality is that India is simply assembling the phones, with almost all of their parts being manufactured in China or Southeast Asia. Hopefully, this will change once Foxconn, Apple's top supplier, sets up production facilities in biggest propeller for future economic growth is investment in Rundefined the US 3.5% of its even-larger in sectors where India has emerged as a top global supplier, investment in R&D is pathetic. India often labels itself the 'pharmacy of the world'. Indian pharma supplies 20% of all generic drugs globally, and 40% of generic drugs used in the US. India imports 70% of its drug ingredients from China. Clearly, in some sense, we are far behind China even in sectors where we have a major global presence.
