Iran points missiles at US sites
This came after it was reported that Iran has its missiles pointed at US military bases in the West Asian region for 'retaliatory strikes' if Washington decided to join the conflict.
There are reports that President Donald Trump is considering joining the Israel-Iran conflict directly, and he held a National Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
Following the meeting, a senior White House official told CNN: 'We are waiting for the decision of the president.'
Trump earlier warned that the US knew the exact location of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei but said it wouldn't target him, 'at least for now'. Trump also declared the US had achieved 'complete and total control' of Iranian airspace, suggesting that the US may get directly involved.
US establishes task force
The United States State Department announced that Washington is establishing a 24/7 task force to assist Americans in the Middle East due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
'The Department of State has established the Middle East Task Force to help coordinate support for us, citizens, our US diplomatic missions and personnel and diplomatic engagement,' State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters during a press briefing on Tuesday.
'The task force is operating 24 hours a day over the past week to help keep us citizens informed. We have issued more than 30 security alerts to countries in the region and updated travel advisories for Iraq and Israel,' she said.

'Why wouldn't there be a regime change?': Trump's 'hint' after US air strikes in Iran; contradicts his own administration's stand

President Donald Trump speaks from the East Room of the White House in Washington, as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth listen. (Carlos Barria/Pool via AP) US President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) appeared to support a potential regime change in Iran, seemingly contradicting his own administration's stand that Operation Midnight Hammer - US air strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran - was not aimed at bringing about a regime change in the Islamic Republic. 'It's not politically correct to use the term, 'Regime Change,' but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn't there be a Regime change??? MIGA' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, slightly tweaking his "Make America Great Again" slogan. Earlier, Trump administration members such as vice president JD Vance, secretary of state Marco Rubio and defense secretary Pete Hegseth, all made public remarks about how Operation Midnight Hammer was only meant to target the nuclear sites, and not toppling the Iranian regime. 'This mission was not and has not been about regime change,' Hegseth said at a news conference which detailed the aerial bombing of the Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. "Our view is very clear that we don't want a regime want to end their nuclear programme and then we want to talk to the Iranians about a long-term settlement here," Vance told NBC News. Speaking to CBS News, Rubio noted that the precise mission had only three objectives - the three targeted nuclear sites. "It was not an attack on Iran, not an attack on the Iranian people, and this wasn't a regime-change move," he stated.

US claims strikes on Iran's nuclear sites caused severe damage but full impact unclear

Jun 23, 2025 05:50 AM IST The US military's strike on three sites in Iran raised urgent questions Sunday about what remains of Tehran's nuclear program and how its weakened military might respond. A combination picture shows satellite images over Fordow underground complex, before and after the U.S. struck the underground nuclear facility, near Qom, Iran, June 20, 2025 (L) and June 22, 2025.(Reuters) The decision to directly involve the US comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country's air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities. But U.S. and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and a 30,000-pound (13,600-kilogram) bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.
