From TikTok to table
MADRID:
At Madrid's new restaurant Pecados, the main attraction is not so much its fusion food as the young Ukrainian-born chef running it - a "Gen Z" social media star who shot to fame teaching recipes during the COVID pandemic.
Elias Dosunmu, 27, boasts 9.6 million followers on TikTok, nearly five million on YouTube and two million on Instagram, making him - in his words - "Spain's most followed gastronomy profile". Dosunmu's rise exemplifies a new path to culinary stardom in the digital age.
He speaks Russian with his Spanish-Nigerian father and Ukrainian mother, who also has Jewish and Polish ancestry, while he and his brother converse in Spanish.
While juggling a job at a fast food franchise with a degree in aerospace engineering, he was furloughed when COVID hit.
With research and the help of his partner, Dosunmu started making short recipe videos using techniques such as rapid-fire catchphrases, dynamic captions and loops, or seamless transitions from the end to the beginning.
The restaurant's target audience skews young, mirroring Dosunmu's online following.
Marcos Castellanos, 12, was in the restaurant eating with his parents, after having asked for a visit to Pecados (Sins) as a Christmas gift. "I know Elias Dosunmu from YouTube and TikTok. I watch him because I like to cook and sometimes I use his recipes," he said.
Dosunmu's creations include Ukrainian varenyky - dumplings inspired by his grandmother's recipe.
He puts his success down to a stubborn work ethic. "I remember my mom used to tell me that our people are used to surviving - literally." REUTERS

Veteran news anchor David Muir sent a touching message to Kelly Ripa's daughter Lola Consuelos on her 24th birthday, highlighting the depth of his long-standing friendship with the Ripa-Consuelos family. On June 21, Kelly Ripa took to Instagram to celebrate her daughter's special day with a heartwarming video montage set to Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely. The tribute featured throwback photos of Lola growing up and received an outpouring of love from fans and celebrity friends. Among the most notable reactions was Muir's, who commented with three red heart emojis. David Muir, anchor of World News Tonight, and Kelly Ripa have been close friends for years. Their bond goes beyond the professional spotlight. Ripa has previously called Muir her 'backbone and moral compass,' especially after publishing her memoir Live Wire in 2022. The friendship extends to shared summers in the Hamptons, where Muir often stays at Kelly and Mark Consuelos' vacation home. The Ripa family frequently praises Muir's cooking, with son Joaquin calling his cheeseburgers 'the best on Earth.' While Muir remains private about his personal life, he continues to share glimpses of his close-knit relationships. Recently, he listed his restored historic townhouse in New York for $7.5 million, a project he called a 'lifelong dream.' Sanam, Mohib announce birth of their first baby
Actors Sanam Saeed and Mohib Mirza have announced the birth of their first child, a baby boy named Vali Hasan Mirza. While the couple shared the news in a joint Instagram post on Friday, the celebratory post reveals that Vali was born on May 18. In the caption, Sanam wrote: "Our hearts are full. With love, wonder, and the tiniest little fingers — we welcome our son Vali Hasan Mirza into the world surrounded by love. All that is by the will of Allah — there is no power except through Him. Please keep our little one in your prayers." This joyous milestone follows years of quiet companionship between the actors. While rumours of a relationship circulated for some time, the couple confirmed their marriage in early 2023 during an appearance on a cricket talk show hosted by Fahad Mustafa. Later, on The Knock Knock Show, Mohib revealed that his feelings for Sanam began while filming the TV series Deedan in 2016. At the time, he was still married to actor Aamina Sheikh, with whom he shares a daughter. The two divorced in 2019. Before Mohib, Sanam was married to her childhood friend, Farhan Hasan, before the couple parted ways. Just weeks before Vali's birth, Sanam posted a heartfelt Mother's Day tribute to her own mother, announcing her pregnancy: "I'll be one very soon Inshallah. I pray I'm every bit like her and more. My saviour, my protector, my role model." Sanam has spoken candidly about her relationship with Mohib on various occasions, calling her decision to marry at 35 the best one she ever made. "I was more sure of myself, more grounded, and more emotionally mature," she said in a 2024 interview. The actor pointed out that societal perceptions often discourage marriage after a certain age, especially for women. "Yes, 35 is considered an older age for marriage, but that doesn't mean if someone has failed in their first marriage or hasn't married by this age, they shouldn't marry at all," she added. Ever the doting husband, Mohib has reciprocated this praise by gushing about Sanam's character. "She is one of the most focused and diligent actors I've ever worked with. She inspires me," he shared in an interview earlier this year. "You won't know a more balanced person."

MrBeast faces backlash over AI YouTube thumbnail tool, promises major changes
YouTube star MrBeast has announced upcoming changes to his AI-powered thumbnail tool following criticism from fellow creators who claim the technology threatens creative integrity on the platform. Developed in partnership with Viewstats, the tool allows users to generate AI-based thumbnails by referencing thumbnails from existing YouTube channels, including their own. Designed to improve engagement and accessibility for smaller creators, the platform charges a monthly fee of $80 — far less than hiring a thumbnail artist. However, backlash erupted after creators like JackSepticEye and PointCrow criticized the tool. JackSepticEye expressed outrage over the unauthorized use of his branding in promotional material, stating on X (formerly Twitter): 'What the actual fk… and he used my logo… Fk AI.' PointCrow added that the tool enables the replication of artists' work without permission. 'You've made something that can steal my (and my artists') hard work without a thought,' he said, noting that MrBeast's model appeared trained on creator content. The backlash prompted a direct conversation between MrBeast and PointCrow, after which MrBeast acknowledged the concerns and pledged to revise the tool. 'Faceswap should only be used to swap your face on YOUR thumbnail, obviously not others,' MrBeast clarified. 'My goal is to build tools to level the playing field… not to replace artists.' Though tensions between MrBeast and critics like JackSepticEye have previously eased, this latest clash suggests renewed friction in the ongoing debate over AI's role in content creation. As of now, Viewstats remains active, but updates are underway to address ethical concerns raised by the creator community.
