It's a state title years in the making for the Timberwolves (15-9), who saw their dreams crushed a year ago in the same spot. This time, despite trailing 4-0, then 5-4, they manifested a different result.
'There is nobody in the entire program we would want up in that situation other than Paul Whelan,' coach Chris Costello said. 'The baseball gods wanted that ball to get down the line today.'

A big portion of the Walpole players won the state Little League title in 2019 — also coached by Costello. After falling in the New England regional, they told Costello they would instead win a title in high school.

NBA rumors: The Timberwolves player untouchable in Kevin Durant trade talks

The post NBA rumors: The Timberwolves player untouchable in Kevin Durant trade talks appeared first on ClutchPoints. When the Phoenix Suns acquired Kevin Durant in a 2023 trade, Anthony Edwards virally declared that the Minnesota Timberwolves would be fine since they had Jaden McDaniels. Two years later, the Timberwolves' front office clearly feels the same way about McDaniels as Edwards does and is not willing to include him in trade discussions. Advertisement Despite not being one of Durant's three preferred trade destinations, the Timberwolves are keeping themselves in the discussion. However, while open to trading several key players, they are not willing to include McDaniels, per The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski. 'Getting close to KD's salary to make a trade mechanically possible is a challenge,' Krawczynski wrote. 'The Wolves are not including Jaden McDaniels in any KD trade talks, per team sources, which means that one of [Julius] Randle or Rudy Gobert would have to be the primary salary eater in the deal.' Without including a player like McDaniels, the Timberwolves do not figure to have enough firepower to pull off a Durant trade. The Suns would not relinquish Durant for a deal centered around Julius Randle or Rudy Gobert, even if Minnesota includes its 2025 and 2026 first-round picks. With the teams involved, Phoenix will almost certainly have better offers on the table. However, if the Timberwolves somehow pull it off, a hypothetical trade would reunite Edwards and Durant. The two were teammates on Team USA at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where they were seen spending a lot of time together. Edwards previously called Durant his role model, admitting he emulates a lot of his game. Timberwolves' 2025-2026 salary situation Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports After an exit in the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2025 playoffs, the Timberwolves enter the offseason without much room to work. If Minnesota makes any significant roster changes, it will likely have to come by trade. Advertisement The Timberwolves have Edwards, McDaniels and Gobert booked on lucrative deals through the 2026-2027 season. Randle and Naz Reid both have player options for the 2025-2026 season, with the former's worth $30.5 million. Early reports suggest both will stick around for at least one more year. In addition to their larger contracts, the Timberwolves also have Donte DiVincenzo and Mike Conley Jr. making over $10 million in 2025-2026. Rob Dillingham, Terrence Shannon Jr., Leonard Miller and Jaylen Clark all also return, though on minor deals. Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who made just over $4 million in 2024-2025, is the team's only rotational player hitting the open market. Timberwolves rumors: Minnesota's stance amid Kevin Durant's disinterest

The post Timberwolves rumors: Minnesota's stance amid Kevin Durant's disinterest appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Minnesota Timberwolves' stance on a potential Kevin Durant trade has been revealed. The Timberwolves are coming off another successful season that saw them make a second straight Western Conference Finals. Anthony Edwards is improving each passing year and has consistently elevated his play when his team needed it most. As the 23-year-old continues to develop, the front office is trying to surround him with the best supporting cast available while not doing anything drastic. Advertisement The Western Conference will be an absolute gauntlet next year, and the Timberwolves will need to make some upgrades or certain players on the roster improve to make it back to the Conference Finals. One of the trades that has been floated over the past few weeks is Durant to Minnesota. However, the recent reports have been discouraging. The Athletic's Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski provided clarity on how the Timberwolves and Suns feel about a potential Durant blockbuster. 'The Suns have made it clear to Durant's camp that they need to prioritize the best return for the team in a deal. What's more, they appear focused on landing the kind of impact players who can help now, as opposed to prioritizing draft picks. The Wolves would seem to have options available to offer, with Rudy Gobert or Julius Randle headlining a package that could give the Suns hopes of contending. With the offers from the Spurs, Rockets, and Heat coming up short to this point, league sources say the Suns are still hopeful that Durant might warm to the Timberwolves possibility. The Timberwolves do not want to make a seismic change to a roster that advanced to the Western Conference finals if Durant is not on board with the move, team sources said. The question now is whether there's any chance of Durant coming around to the idea.' The Timberwolves will need to make a decision on Randle soon. There's a decent chance three-time All-Star opts out of his player option in pursuit of a long-term deal. Randle had a slightly uneven regular season but really hit his stride toward the end. The 30-year-old was mostly terrific this postseason run. Gobert has two more years on his current deal before he's up for a player option as well. Advertisement While the four-time Defensive Player of the Year can be a maddening center to watch at times, he is still a very valuable contributor on this roster and has played a significant role in this franchise's ascent. Trading for Durant is ultimately a move the Timberwolves would need to be sure about, since he is set to be a free agent after next season. It's ultimately not worth it for Minnesota to take a Toronto Raptors-Kawhi Leonard type gamble if that significantly mortgages the future. Pistons Named Best Fit for Timberwolves' Free Agent Big Man

Pistons Named Best Fit for Timberwolves' Free Agent Big Man originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After seeing what Cade Cunningham did in the 2024-25 NBA season, the Detroit Pistons now understand the value of putting spacing around their rising superstar. Their desire for more has been noted by insiders across the league. Advertisement Marc Stein reported a while back: "The Pistons are among the teams with interest in [Minnesota] Timberwolves big man [Naz] Reid, league sources is known to covet a floor-spacing big man and, according to sources, is likewise said to hold interest in Indiana's Myles Turner." Stein is not the only man who believes there is a natural fit between the Timberwolves center and the Pistons. Bobby Marks of ESPN thought the same was true. Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Osentowski-USA TODAY Sports Marks tried to play matchmaker in his latest write-up for ESPN. The well-respected writer had the Pistons as one of the two best fits, alongside the Timberwolves, for the versatile big. Advertisement Marks projected Reid's next deal to be around three years, $57 million. The last year of the new contract includes a player option. "Because of the Timberwolves' finances and the majority of other teams with no more than $14.1 million to spend in free agency, Reid's next contract is difficult to project despite the former Sixth Man of the Year having his best season," Marks noted. He continued, "By declining the $15 million player option and signing a three-year, $57 million contract with the Timberwolves or a team that has cap space, Reid gets a slight increase in salary. More importantly, he has the option to extend or become a free agent in 2027." Marks explained how the Pistons can easily get themselves into the mix here. There would, however, be a price to pay for that. Advertisement "The Pistons, meanwhile, could create up to $17 million in cap space (or possibly more with a trade) but at the expense of free agents Tim Hardaway Jr., Dennis Schroder and Malik Beasley," Marks concluded. If Detroit is hell-bent on spacing the floor at the five spot, Reid is a great candidate to do that. However, to Marks' point, that will not come without sacrifice.
