Village panchayat heads asked to take effective steps to control street dogs population

District Collector R. Sukumar has exhorted the heads of village panchayats to take effective steps to control the street dogs population in the areas under their jurisdiction as the dog bite incidents are on the rise.
In a meeting convened at the Collectorate on Thursday, he said more number of dog bite cases were being reported across the district as the stray dog population had increased manifold over the years. Hence, the village panchayat heads should take measures for controlling the stray dog population by performing animal birth control surgeries.
Moreover, the owners of pet animals, especially dogs, should be instructed to get license for their animals after properly vaccinating them.
Citing the recent accident in neighbouring Thoothukudi district in which a van plunged into a roadside open well, the Collector asked the panchayat heads to identify similar wells left in unprotected manner along the roads and also near the streets of their villages.
'If such wells are identified in your area, take immediate steps to erect fence around the wells or construct protective walls to ensure the safety of the public, especially the children,' Mr Sukumar said.
The Collector appealed to the panchayat presidents to check completely the sale of banned tobacco products or other narcotic substances in their villages, particularly near the educational institutions. Moreover, drug abuse awareness messages should be shared with the villagers in sustained manner.
The panchayat heads should ensure that there was no school dropouts in their area and follow the students from poor families to understand if they were pursing their higher studies in colleges after passing Plus Two public examination.
He also asked the village panchayat heads to clear the tax arrears through diligent collection of taxes payable to the rural local body.

Clash erupts during ABVP-Yuva Morcha protest against Minister Sivankutty

A protest taken out by activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Yuva Morcha against General Education Minister V. Sivankutty over the 'Bharat Mata' issue led to a clash between the police and the activists at Tali in Kozhikode on Saturday (June 21). Earlier, speaking to the media at the Government Guest House, Mr. Sivankutty alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had instigated ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists to obstruct him at every turn. He also claimed that activists had destroyed the National Flag displayed on his car during a protest in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Sivankutty's remarks about the use of a portrait of 'Bharat Mata' at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram during an official programme had earlier triggered the controversy.

Plus One students brutally assaulted in ‘ragging' incident at Thiruvananthapuram school

T'puram: Three Plus One students were allegedly brutally assaulted by senior students in a suspected ragging incident at a school in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. A video of the incident, which allegedly took place inside a classroom at Alamcode Govt VHSS in Attingal, went viral on social media platforms on Friday. The three students suffered grievous injuries in their eyes and face. However, Nagaroor Police have not registered any case over the incident yet, claiming that no one has come forward with a formal complaint. The school management suspended at least seven Plus Two students for 15 days, pending disciplinary actions against them. According to reports, the senior students reached the class of the Plus One students during lunch break on Wednesday. They then allegedly asked the juniors to introduce themselves. While doing so, one of the junior students was asked to be louder, which led to an argument. Two other students argued on his behalf, leading to a group clash. The senior students then brutally attacked their juniors in front of teachers and escaped. Following the incident, police convened a meeting of parents, students, and school management to discuss the issue. "In the meeting, the affected parties were not willing to file complaints as the issue was settled by them. The Plus Two students were warned not to repeat such offences in future to avoid facing strict actions," said police.

Two killed in road accident in Idukki

Two youngsters were killed in a collision between a multi utility vehicle (MUV) and a motorcycle at Chellarkovil, near Anakkara, in Idukki on Tuesday (June 17, 2025). The deceased have been identified as Alan K. Shibu, 17, and Shanet Shaiju, 17, residents of Anakkara. According to the police, the incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. at Gandhi Nagar, near Chellarkovil. The MUV carrying cardamom plantation workers from Kerala to Tamil Nadu reportedly rammed the two-wheeler on which the youths were travelling. The youths were rushed to the Puttady Government Hospital, but their lives could not be saved. The bodies have been shifted to Idukki Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. The youngsters had completed their Plus Two and were planning to pursue higher education.
